He is a poet, novelist, essayist and literary critic and also a good singer. He has been acclaimed worldwide for his novels and love for Indian classical music. He has made a mark in the pantheon of contemporary Indian wri ters in English. His writings are conspicuous, striking and vibrating touch the heart of his readers. His works reflect the Indian values and Bengali sensibility, simplicity and distinctiveness of language which speak to the reader and pave a ground for them to move forward. The celebrated exponents of this have been Thomas Hardy who wrote about the Wessex area in England or William Wordsworth in poetry who wrote about the Lake District in England. In tune with this definition, the novel Difficult Daughter by Manju Kapur can be called Regional as the writer more or less sticks to one geographical area. Manju Kapur is a North Indian who resides in Delhi. All her novels are set in North India giving a glimpse of North Indian culture. Manju Kapur has set all her novels in the urban and international background: Amritsar, Lahore, Delhi, Ayodhya, Halifax in Canada. There is an unmistakable essence of North Indian culture through the descriptions of place, culture, dress, food, language, traditions, rituals, fasting and prayers. A writer’s work is faced with the dilemma of being termed either as regional literature or world literature. The former is considered to be inferior to the latter. So the Punjabi Literature in historically Modern term started with the influence of British like any other Indian literature at that time. Punjab went under tremendous change and turmoil at political level after the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the end of Khalsa Raj. British rulers were very much aware about the social and cultural situation of Punjab and they would exploit it with the same policy of divide and rule. To better understand this relationship a comparison of colonial and postcolonial Punjabi literature is presented. Colonial Punjabi Literature is influenced by the Imperial process of colonization. New themes and genres were introduced during Colonial period of Punjabi Literature. Reaction and resistance against colonizers is also a dominant theme of Punjabi literature produced during colonial period. Post-colonial writers restructured the imported colonial art-forms to assimilate the style, structure, and themes of native styles of literary expression. They expressed new themes in in literary genres introduced during colonial period. Visible changes in the style, structure and themes of Punjabi Literature are found in Post-colonial period.
