In this article, we document this growth over time, discuss several of the important concepts that are used in the application of network approaches to archaeology, and introduce the other articles in this special issue on networks in archaeology. We argue that the suitability and contribution of network science techniques within particular archaeological research contexts can be usefully explored by scruti- nizing the past phenomena under study, how these are abstracted into concepts, and how these in turn are represented as network data. For this reason, each of the articles in this special issue is discussed in terms of the phenomena that they seek to address, the abstraction in terms of concepts that they use to study connectivity, and the representations of network data that they employ in their analyses. The approaches currently being used are diverse and interdisciplinary, which we think are evidence of a healthy exploratory stage in the application of network science in archaeology. It will briefly introduce the history of two network traditions that have been highly influential in archaeology: social network analysis and complex networks in physics. A review of published archaeological and historical applications follows, illustrating that, although a wide range of applications already exists, archaeologists have still to explore its full potential as a research perspective. Some relevant papers presented at the Data Analysis session are briefly described and considered in order to add original and critical approaches to an already very diverse corpus. The development of a methodological framework emerging from graph theory, coupled with the growth of computational power and a growing multidisciplinary theoretical framework aimed at interpreting these analyses, have eased the difficulties of uncovering, analyzing, and interpreting networks in the past. The analysis of networks and the study of the past (Archaeology and History) The exploration of linkages between individuals, groups, localities or objects with the help of the concepts and tools of (Social) Network Analysis (NA) has boomed in the last decade; also in historical and archaeological studies, the number of researchers working with network-analytical methods has significantly increased. The aim of this workshop is to bring together scholars from various historical disciplines as well as beyond who are working or interested in this field in order to discuss the possibilities of, experiences with and problems of NA for the study of the past. As keynote speaker, Tom Brughmans from the Archaeological Computing Research Group, University of Southampton (UK) will present his project on Archaeological Network Analysis; he has established an online blog for this new field of archaeological research (http://archaeologicalnetworks.wordpress.com/) as well as a network of researchers interested in NA. Most recently, he has organized a session on Archaeological and Historical NA for the “39th Annual Conference of Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology“ (CAA 2011) in Beijing (China; cf. http://archaeologicalnetworks.wordpress.com/caa-2011/). After the presentation of Tom Brughmans, the research on NA at the Institut für Byzanzforschung will be briefly presented. Then there will be opportunity for all participants to present and discuss their experiences with NA (participants are invited to briefly – 5 minutes – present their ongoing projects– laptop and video-beamer will be provided). In particular we would like to discuss central questions of Archaeological and Historical NA such as: How can NA be applied to different disciplines of historical studies and different sources (objects, documents)? What is the significance of network analytical results from a historical point of view? How can we cope with fragmentary source evidence and incomplete samples? Is it possible to use the research on large scale and complex modern day networks for the study of the past? Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory 20: 623–662. </a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="362537" href="https://au.academia.edu/TomBrughmans">Tom Brughmans</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">This review aims to expose the potential of formal network methods for archaeology by tracing the origins of the academic traditions, network models and techniques that have been most influential to archaeologists. A brief discussion of graph theoretic applications in archaeology reveals how graph visualization and analysis was used since the 1960’s in a very similar way to later network analysis applications but did not seem to have influenced the more widespread adoption of network techniques over the past decade. These recent archaeological applications have been strongly influenced by two academic traditions, social network analysis and socio-physics. The most influential and promising techniques and models adopted from these traditions are critically discussed. This review reveals some general trends which are considered to be the result of two critical issues that will need to be addressed in future archaeological network analysis: (1) a general unawareness of the historicity and diversity of formal network methods both within and outside the archaeological discipline has resulted in a very limited methodological scope; (2) the adoption or development of network methods has very rarely been driven by specific archaeological research questions and is dominated by a few popular models and techniques, which has in some cases resulted in a routinized explanatory process. Social network analysis offers formalized ways of describing and thus comparing attributes of actors related to each other in networks. Using quantitative spatial data, social network analysis promises deeper insights into how social positions are achieved and developed, as mirrored in the ancient fl ows of materials.
