However, network analysis remains a viable methodology for answering and raising humanistic questions-we simply must be cautious and must be willing to get our hands dirty editing the algorithms to suit our needs. (Weingart, 2011) Gradual development and important progress in network and graph theories, from the mid-XX century on, offered many new perspectives for various research fields. Relying on the multitude of mathematical, social, economic, cultural, and relational concepts for the structural analysis of human relations and interactions, the network approach and its multiple sub-branches (including Social Network Analysis) have slowly but steadily knocked at the door of Humanities. Social Network Analysis (SNA) is a graph theory-based approach, created to explore social structures through the use of networks. 1 Relying on the network approach theory, which refers to the study of systems and patterns recognised in network graphs, Social Network Analysis aims to detect and measure various types of relatedness within a given group or community. The network approach has been applied to a wide range of archaeological and historical datasets and contexts in various ways and with variable outcomes. Consequently, within the last few decades, network analysis has increasingly featured in the Classical and Ancient Near Eastern Studies. Within the field of history, the first study that focused on the reconstruction of the model of relatedness appeared in 1979. Richard M. Smith published in the Journal of Family History the paper of a very conspicuous title: &#39;Kin and Neighbors in a Thirteenth-Century Suffolk Community.&#39; 2 Smith analysed the 13,592 interactions of 575 individuals of a village in medieval England, 6 Introduction</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Social Network Analysis and Egyptology&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:111070758,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/108690876/Social_Network_Analysis_and_Egyptology&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/108690876/Social_Network_Analysis_and_Egyptology"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="1" data-entity-id="47765055" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/47765055/Networks_in_the_Social_Sciences">Networks in the Social Sciences</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="8294914" href="https://uni-corvinus.academia.edu/LillaVicsek">Lilla Vicsek</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Corvinus Journal of Sociology and Social Policy, 2016</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">While the subject of networks has been an issue in the social sciences for decades, it can still be regarded as one of the concepts significant enough to excite the imagination of both theorists and empirical researchers. Because of this interest, many different types of approaches to networks have been developed. In many cases these theoretical and analytical developments have occurred relatively independently from each other, using different vocabularies and research styles. This paper presents two prominent network approaches-namely, Actor-Network Theory (ANT) and Social Network Analysis (SNA)-in order to highlight the similarities and differences between the two. Besides providing a comparison, the paper discusses the potentially fruitful convergence of these two theories. We argue that ANT researchers could benefit from using certain SNA methods (such as visualization techniques and quantitative measures), whilst SNA researchers would benefit from developing new theoretical and empirical ideas about how to introduce non-human actors into networks that also contain humans.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Networks in the Social Sciences&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:66706932,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/47765055/Networks_in_the_Social_Sciences&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/47765055/Networks_in_the_Social_Sciences"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="2" data-entity-id="10904223" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/10904223/2014_with_A_Wanger_S_Kedar_K_Abraham_Y_Cohen_R_Zadok_Quantitative_Social_Network_Analysis_SNA_and_the_Study_of_Cuneiform_Archives_Akkadika_134_117_134">2014 (with: A. Of course, these verdicts were not entirely unfounded, as Mustafa Emirbayer and Jeff Goodwin pointed out in 1994 in their influential paper on „Network Analysis, Culture, and the Problem of Agency“: “despite its powerful conceptualization of social structure, network analysis as it has been developed to date has inadequately theorized the causal role of ideals, beliefs, and values, and of the actors that strive to realize them; as a result, it has neglected the cultural and symbolic moment in the very determination of social action.” Although meanwhile various theoretical concepts and models of “relational sociology” have been developed , the cultural dimension is still underrepresented in many works of quantitatively oriented social and also historical network analysis. In this paper, I will present the explanatory value of some of these relational approaches to social reality for historical research and their combination with quantitative network analysis. For various case studies, the actual interplay between the structural and the cultural dimension of social, religious, economic, political or intellectual linkages between individuals, groups, communities, but also cultural concepts will be demonstrated.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;From quantitative to qualitative and back again. The analysis of networks and the study of the past (Archaeology and History) The exploration of linkages between individuals, groups, localities or objects with the help of the concepts and tools of (Social) Network Analysis (NA) has boomed in the last decade; also in historical and archaeological studies, the number of researchers working with network-analytical methods has significantly increased. The aim of this workshop is to bring together scholars from various historical disciplines as well as beyond who are working or interested in this field in order to discuss the possibilities of, experiences with and problems of NA for the study of the past. As keynote speaker, Tom Brughmans from the Archaeological Computing Research Group, University of Southampton (UK) will present his project on Archaeological Network Analysis; he has established an online blog for this new field of archaeological research (http://archaeologicalnetworks.wordpress.com/) as well as a network of researchers interested in NA. Most recently, he has organized a session on Archaeological and Historical NA for the “39th Annual Conference of Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology“ (CAA 2011) in Beijing (China; cf. http://archaeologicalnetworks.wordpress.com/caa-2011/). After the presentation of Tom Brughmans, the research on NA at the Institut für Byzanzforschung will be briefly presented. Then there will be opportunity for all participants to present and discuss their experiences with NA (participants are invited to briefly – 5 minutes – present their ongoing projects– laptop and video-beamer will be provided). In particular we would like to discuss central questions of Archaeological and Historical NA such as: How can NA be applied to different disciplines of historical studies and different sources (objects, documents)? What is the significance of network analytical results from a historical point of view? How can we cope with fragmentary source evidence and incomplete samples? Is it possible to use the research on large scale and complex modern day networks for the study of the past? A summary of the results of our discussion will be presented online afterwards.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Invitation: Connecting the dots. This paper proposes a new approach based on the method of complex network analysis which provides new possibilities for the better understanding of the Old Kingdom social and administrative developments. Network analyses allow archaeologists to move from the bottom up, to critically engage with traditional models of sociopolitical organization commonly deployed in archaeological interpretation. The use of network analyses rooted in large-scale, robust datasets allows for the identi cation of organizational characteristics that may be masked or unaccounted for by a reliance on essentialized sociopolitical types derived from the ethnological record. This chapter outlines the methodological principles and conceptual frameworks made available through the use of archaeological network analysis in characterizing and evaluating the underlying organizational structures that connect members of a society to one another. Instead of focusing on sociopolitical types, a framework is presented that places the primacy of investigations on particular patterns of relationships between social and political actors and entities.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Networks and Sociopolitical Organization&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:107980111,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/110037680/Networks_and_Sociopolitical_Organization&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/110037680/Networks_and_Sociopolitical_Organization"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="9" data-entity-id="3587117" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/3587117/Social_network_analysis_An_introduccion">Social network analysis: An introduccion</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="4282419" href="https://utoronto.academia.edu/AlexandraMarin">Alexandra Marin</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Forthcoming in Handbook of Social Network Analysis. …, 2009</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Social network analysis takes as its starting point the premise that social life is created primarily and most importantly by relations and the patterns formed by these relations.
