this paper is to examine the impact of adopting a strategic approach to human resource management (HRM) in professional service firms (PSFs). It provides the empirical evidence by comparing and contrasting the adoption of a strategic approach to HRM in two Australian PSFs. Design/methodology/approach -A qualitative case study approach is adopted. Data were collected from multiple sources. The secondary sources comprised annual reports, press releases and industry reports. In total, 40 semi-structured interviews were conducted with senior partners, professional staff, HR managers and ex-employees of the two firms. Findings -The findings suggest that differences in the performance of PSFs could be explained by organizational control systems such as personnel and cultural controls. The qualitative data generated by the two PSF cases provided evidence to support the notion that strategic human resource management is an important factor in explaining firm performance. Our findings provide empirical support for the importance of strategic approaches to HRM. Research limitations/implications -One limitation of this study is the adoption of case study method, the findings of which cannot be generalized to a wider population. Thus, the study provides only a limited body of accumulated knowledge. Future studies could adopt a longitudinal research design to test the relationships between HRM systems, control systems and firm performance. Practical implications -To be competitive, PSFs must restructure their HRM functions to allow the department to participate in strategic decision-making. HR departments in firms should also incorporate cultural and personnel controls as a way to achieve higher levels of firm performance. Using this argument, the present article examines HRM in professional service firms (PSFs) in pursuit of three objectives. First, we introduce a conceptual framework that illustrates how the constitutive characteristics of PSFs, as contingency factors, influence HRM practices and research. Second, based on this framework, we summarize key findings of research on HRM in PSFs and open up potential avenues for further research. Third, we reflect on the argument that HRM in PSFs can contribute to an understanding of HRM practices in other organizational settings, leading to the question of the mutual transferability of HRM practices. Embracing the resource-based view and configurational perspective, it is argued that to pursue competitive advantage, HRM practices have to be unique, valuable and inimitable. The quest to determine what and how these HRM practices shape and impact firm performance is still limited. This paper examines the evidence for such link. Data were collected from 312 employees from seven insurance firms in Klang Valley using self administered questionnaire technique. The results confirm that the configuration of recruitment and selection, internal communication, and performance appraisal practice is positively associated with the overall firm performance. This demonstrates that aligned HRM practices serve as an internal firm strategy for firms to achieve superior performance. Strategic management of human resources involves with establishing a connection amongst the general strategic objectives of the organization and the strategy for human resources and performance. In this study, an approach to surveys was used using an autonomous standardized questionnaires as a data collecting technique, which was communicated to (50) executives and gathered from (29) managers. The study found no significant differences in HRM effects based on work format. Years of expertise significantly influenced HRM dynamics and performance indicators, indicating its crucial role. Overall, expertise had a more substantial impact than work format on HRM-related outcomes. The current investigation makes significant enhancements to the reservoir of information at both the scientific and pragmatic stages, and it offers substantial suggestions that will improve HRM and
