It suggests that the basis for this analysis lies in the supposed cultural effects of the British union rather than in its materialist history, which raises questions about the suitability of a colonial model. In tracing the contours of such an analysis, this essay identifies strong similarities between the explanations offered by modern literary criticism and those proposed by early twentieth-century nationalists in their effort to elaborate Scotland as a culturally discrete political entity. On the basis of these similarities, this paper concludes that the attempt to identify Scotland as a colony serves to reproduce the essentialist models of nationality which the early nationalist readings of Scotland contained. Is its experience and literature comparable to that of overseas postcolonial countries? Or are such comparisons no more than patriotic victimology to mask Scottish complicity in the British Empire and justify nationalism? These questions have been heatedly debated in recent years, especially in the run-up to the 2014 referendum on independence, and remain topical amid continuing campaigns for more autonomy and calls for a post-Brexit “indyref2.” However, postcolonialism cannot be reduced to politics: cultural concerns are equally important. Focusing on the first centuries of the British Unions, Gaelic Scotland in the Colonial Imagination also offers a general introduction to the emerging field of postcolonial Scottish studies, assessing both its potential and limitations in order to promote further interdisciplinary dialogue. Accessible to readers from various backgrounds, the book combines overviews of theoretical, social, and cultural contexts with detailed case studies of literary and nonliterary texts. The main focus is on internal divisions between the anglophone Lowlands and traditionally Gaelic Highlands. Central to the ‘internal colonialism’ debate, these divisions also play a crucial role in Scottish–English relations. This study shows how the image of Scotland’s Gaelic margins changed under the influence of two simultaneous developments: the emergence of the modern nation state and the rise of overseas colonialism. Both sparked intense debates over ethnic hierarchies, progress and development, cultural intermixture, exploitation and resistance. White swathes intersect the figure&#39;s saltired back, the Scottish flag marking a symbolic and material impression of violent domination. Six words are emblazoned above the head: &#39;WE CAME. WE SAW. WE EXPLOITED&#39;. In its blunt amplification and capitalisation, this emblematic representation exemplifies the boom in academic and popular interest in the significant role of Scots and Scotland in the British empire: both as influential contributors to the moral and philosophical reasoning, the economic theory and the material practices and management of empire and imperialism, and also as a key source of resistance to the project. The narrative of the ambivalent nature of Scotland&#39;s imperial history is well established, yet it is important to recognise a contemporary attempt to question and renegotiate the terms and meaning of this stated ambivalence through the revelations of a recently revitalised Scottish history, politics and culture that has made great use of postcolonial resources. In this context, a contemporary fervour for admonition and admission of Scottish colonial culpability can be perceived as part of an internationalist anti-imperialist argument made by several established and emergent writers and academics galvanised by the resonance of postcolonial studies in a Scottish/British context. This &#39;resonance&#39;, of course, is, not least, highly debatable. The fact that demands for greater political autonomy by Britain&#39;s largest devolved nation are being made from a postcolonial platform is significant, and needs to be registered by the wider community of postcolonialists, not least because the received corpus of postcolonial studies has often been criticised by scholars in Scottish Studies for its neglect of the internal, intra-national distinctions, tensions and fissures in British culture and politics. It is equally important to register that this devolutionary-inflected argument is bolstered by an identifiably leftist and nationalist cultural production in Scotland, one that tempers the kind of postcolonialist theory being applied. I will seek to emphasise the significance of this in the latter part of this position paper, when I discuss the politics of contemporary Scottish writing.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button While historiography may give an answer in the negative, this study reveals that the contemporary Scottish novel is haunted by strong feelings, marked by perceptions of abjection and inferiorisation in response to constructing the English as dominating. Drawing from an unprecedented corpus of contemporary Scottish novels, this study explores the postcolonial in Scottish fiction in order to investigate the underlying discursive power relations that shape the Scottish literary imagination. As such, the study demonstrates that the analysis of Scottish national identity profits from this new angle of interpreting the Scottish novel as postcolonial. The analysis of discourses such as gender, class, space and place, and race reveals how the construction of the Scottish as marginalised permeates the width of the contemporary Scottish novel, by referring to diverse examples, such as James Kelman’s How late it was, how late or genre fiction, such as Ian Rankin’s Set in Darkness. To argue on similar lines, there is no such thing as an academic discipline (or indeed, an epistemological practice) that can exist in even relative isolation from the global horizon of cultural production and knowledge formation. Scottish Studies, a relatively young discipline, whose field directly intersects and partly overlaps, among others, with English, Celtic and Nordic Studies (and, through its involvement in the British Empire, with postcolonial scholarship) is no exception. And yet, it is important to acknowledge here, at the very beginning of this special issue, the specific history of this discipline, both as a contested territory, and in its changing relationship with other established or emergent disciplines -it is in fact only through an awareness of its shifting borders, and of its many fissures and tensions, and also with a memory of its past that we can gauge our present concerns and look forward. Starting from the definitions of nationalism given by Michael Billig, Michael Ignatieff, Ernest Renan, and the analyses of Scottish historians and cultural nationalists, it shows how what it calls the “representational trope” is at last being abandoned. This renewal of our critical perspective involves looking at the various ways the future can be envisaged, and at the variety of responses to what Riach describes as the fundamental goal for the arts—to further our understanding of our common humanity. Those responses involve for artists the necessity to (re)construct the future rather than to represent the people. The insights of modern theory have of course been liberally and productively ‘applied’ to texts claimed by ‘Scottish literature’, but their implications for the separate field constituted under that flag have been largely unheeded. But from anotherangle, Scotland turns out to have privileged access to the energies of theory, so long as these are understood to affirm precisely the Scottish exceptionalism which theory would challenge were it encountered as an extrinsic discourse. By positioning theory as inhering in Scottish literature – smuggled under the kilt in a gesture of recuperation – the need to engage with theory at the level of critique is passed over in silence. By this pattern the ‘marginal’ valence of Scottish literature not only exempts cultural nationalism from critique, but re-casts it as a subordinated critical language actually validated by theory (conceived as a general repudiation of Eng. Lit.’s blinkered arrogance).
