name="2"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-1.htm#aramaic"><b>1</b></a></span>And Yaquuv dwelt in the land of the dwelling of his father in the land of Canaan. <A name="3"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-2.htm#aramaic"><b>2</b></a></span>And these are the generations of Yaquuv: Yoseph, son of seventeen years, was shepherding a flock with his brothers, and he was Prince with the sons of Zelpha and with the sons of Balha, wives of his father, and Yoseph brought their evil report to their father. <A name="4"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-3.htm#aramaic"><b>3</b></a></span>And Israel had loved Yoseph more than all his sons because he was a son of old age to him, and he made for him a coat of long sleeves. <A name="5"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-4.htm#aramaic"><b>4</b></a></span>And his brothers saw that their father had loved him more than all of them, and they hated him and they were not able to speak peace with him.<p> <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-5.htm#aramaic"><b>5</b></a></span>And Yoseph dreamed a dream and he told it to his brothers and they hated him more. <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-6.htm#aramaic"><b>6</b></a></span>And he said to them, “Hear this dream that I have dreamed: <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-7.htm#aramaic"><b>7</b></a></span>Behold we were binding sheaves in the field and behold, my sheaf stood up and was erect, and behold your sheaves surrounded and bowed down to my sheaf.” <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-8.htm#aramaic"><b>8</b></a></span>And his brothers said to him, “Do you truly reign over us, or being authorized, do you have authority with us?” And they hated him more due to his dream and due to his statement.<p> <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-9.htm#aramaic"><b>9</b></a></span>And he dreamed again another dream, and he related it to his brothers and said to them, “Look, again I have dreamed a dream, and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-10.htm#aramaic"><b>10</b></a></span>And he related it to his father and to his brothers, and his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Truly, will we come, I and your mother and your brothers, to worship you on the ground?” <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-11.htm#aramaic"><b>11</b></a></span>And his brothers were jealous of him, and his father was keeping the statement.<p> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-12.htm#aramaic"><b>12</b></a></span>And the brothers of Yoseph went to shepherd the flock of their father in Shekim. <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-13.htm#aramaic"><b>13</b></a></span>And Israel said to Yoseph, “Behold, your brothers are shepherding in Shekim; come, I shall send you to them”, and he said to him, “Here I am.” <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-14.htm#aramaic"><b>14</b></a></span>And his father said to him, “Go, see the welfare of your brothers and the welfare of the sheep and bring me a report”, and Yaquuv sent him from the valley of Khebroun and he came to Shecheem.<p> <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-15.htm#aramaic"><b>15</b></a></span>And a man found him as he wandered in a field, and that man asked him and said to him, “What are you looking for?” <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-16.htm#aramaic"><b>16</b></a></span>And he said, “I am looking for my brothers; show me where they are shepherding.” <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-17.htm#aramaic"><b>17</b></a></span>The man said to him, “They took them from here and I heard that they said, ‘Let us go to Dawthan’ and Yoseph went on after his brothers and he found them in Dawthan.<p> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-18.htm#aramaic"><b>18</b></a></span>And they saw him from a distance, and before he came to them, they were scheming against him to kill him. <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-19.htm#aramaic"><b>19</b></a></span>And they said, each man to his brother, “Behold that dreamer comes dreaming. <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-20.htm#aramaic"><b>20</b></a></span>Come, let us kill him and we will throw him into one of the pits and we will say, ‘A dangerous beast ate him’, and we will see what there is to his dream.” <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-21.htm#aramaic"><b>21</b></a></span>And Rubyl heard, and he saved him from their hands and said to them, “We will not kill a soul.” <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-22.htm#aramaic"><b>22</b></a></span>And Rubyl said to them, “You shall not shed blood. Throw him into this pit in the wilderness and do not stretch a hand against him”, so that he would save him from their hands and return him to his father. <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-23.htm#aramaic"><b>23</b></a></span>And when Yoseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of the coat of long sleeves that he was wearing; <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-24.htm#aramaic"><b>24</b></a></span>And they took him and they threw him into the pit, and the pit was empty and there was no water in it.<p> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-25.htm#aramaic"><b>25</b></a></span>And they sat to eat bread and lifted up their eyes and they saw, and behold, a caravan of Arabia was coming from Gilead, and their camels were bearing balm and balsam and terebinth berries, and were going to carry them to Egypt. <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-26.htm#aramaic"><b>26</b></a></span>And Yehuda his brother said, “What profit is there that we kill our brother and conceal his blood? <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-27.htm#aramaic"><b>27</b></a></span>Come, let us sell him to the Arabs, and our hand will not be on him, because he is our brother and our flesh”, and his brothers listened to him. <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-28.htm#aramaic"><b>28</b></a></span>And Midianite men, traders, passed and they dragged and carried Yoseph from the pit and they sold Yoseph to the Arabs for twenty silver coins, and they brought him to Egypt.<p> <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-29.htm#aramaic"><b>29</b></a></span>And Rubyl returned to the pit, and behold, Yoseph was not in it, and he ripped his clothes. <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-30.htm#aramaic"><b>30</b></a></span>And he returned to his brothers and said to them, “Where is the boy? Where shall I go?”<p> <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-31.htm#aramaic"><b>31</b></a></span>And they took the coat of Yoseph and they killed a kid of the goats and they dipped the coat in its blood; <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-32.htm#aramaic"><b>32</b></a></span>And they sent the coat of long sleeves and they brought it to their father and they said, “We found this; see if this is your son's coat or not.” <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/37-33.htm#aramaic"><b>33</b></a></span>And he knew it and said, “It is the coat of my son.
