And He answered him and said, <i>I am as</i><FR> thou sayest.<Fr> <A name="5"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>But Pilate said to the chief priests, and to the people, I find nothing criminal in this man. <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then they were more vehement, saying, He stirreth up the people <i>to sedition,</i> spreading his doctrine throughout all Judea: having begun at Galilee <i>and come</i> even to this place.<p> <A name="7"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus before Herod<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Now when Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked, if the man were a Galilean:<p> <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>and understanding that He was of Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also at Jerusalem at that time.<p> <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And Herod, when he saw Jesus, was very glad; for he had of a long <i>time</i> been desirous to see Him, because he had heard much of Him, and he hoped to see some miracle wrought by Him. <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And he asked Him many questions; but He answered him nothing: <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>though the chief priests and scribes stood vehemently accusing Him. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But Herod with his soldiers set Him at nought and insulted <i>Him,</i> and put on Him a gaudy robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And on <i>that</i> same day Pilate and Herod became friends with each other: for before they were at enmity one with the other.<p> <A name="14"></a><p class="hdg">The Crowd Chooses Barabbas<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#15">Matthew 27:15–23</a>; <a href ="../mark/15.htm#6">Mark 15:6–11</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And Pilate called together the chief priests, and the rulers, <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>and the people, and said unto them, Ye have brought to me this man as one that perverteth the people: and behold I have examined <i>Him</i> before you, and found nothing chargeable on Him, of the things you alledge against Him: <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>nor Herod neither; for I sent you to him, and behold nothing worthy of death is proved upon Him. <A name=""></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>I will therefore chastise Him, and <i>so</i> release <i>Him.</i> <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-16.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Now he was obliged to release one to them at the feast.<p> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And they all cried out, saying, Away with this <i>man,</i> and release to us Barabbas: <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>(who for a riot in the city, and <i>for</i> murder, was committed to prison:) <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Pilate therefore spake to <i>them</i> again, being desirous to release Jesus. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>But they bawled out, saying, Crucify <i>Him,</i> crucify Him. <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And he said to them a third time, what evil hath He done? I have found nothing in Him deserving death: I will therefore chastise Him, and let <i>Him</i> go. <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But they insisted upon <i>it</i> with loud clamours, demanding Him to be crucified: and their voices and <i>those</i> of the chief priests prevailed. <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>So Pilate gave sentence that what they demanded should be done. <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And he released to them him that for sedition and murder had been cast into prison, whom they desired; and delivered up Jesus to their will.<p> <A name="27"></a><p class="hdg">The Crucifixion<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#32">Matthew 27:32–44</a>; <a href ="../mark/15.htm#21">Mark 15:21–32</a>; <a href ="../john/19.htm#16">John 19:16–27</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And when they led Him away, they laid hold on one Simon a Cyrenean coming out of the country, and put the cross on him to bear it behind Jesus.<p> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And there followed Him a great multitude of people, and of women, who also bewailed and lamented Him: but Jesus turning to them said, <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span><FR>Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.<Fr> <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span><FR>For behold the days are coming in which they shall say, happy <Fr><i>are</i><FR> the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the breasts that never gave suck.<Fr> <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span><FR>Then shall they say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us:<Fr> <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span><FR>for if they do these things to the green wood, what shall be done to the dry?<Fr><p> <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And there were also two other malefactors led with Him to be put to death.<p> <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, there they crucified Him and the malefactors: one on <i>his</i> right <i>hand</i> and the other on <i>his</i> left. <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And Jesus said, <FR>Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.<Fr> And they parted his garments, and cast lots <i>for them.</i> <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And the people stood looking <i>on,</i> and <i>even</i> the rulers also with them derided <i>Him,</i> saying, He saved others, let Him save Himself, if He be the Christ the chosen of God. <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And the soldiers too insulted Him, coming to <i>Him</i> and offering Him vinegar, saying, <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>If thou art the king of the Jews, save thyself. <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>And there was a superscription written over Him in Greek, and Latin and Hebrew letters, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.<p> <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And one of the malefactors that were executed <i>with Him</i> reviled Him, saying, If thou be the Messiah, save thyself and us. <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>But the other answered and rebuked him, saying, Dost <i>not</i> thou fear God neither, when thou <i>thyself</i> art in the same condemnation?
