The phrase "Now arise" indicates a divine directive to take action, suggesting a shift from a period of waiting or preparation to one of movement and obedience. The Brook of Zered is a geographical marker that signifies the boundary between the wilderness wanderings and the approach to the Promised Land. This brook is located in the southeastern part of the Dead Sea, and crossing it symbolizes leaving behind the old generation that perished in the wilderness due to disobedience. The command to "cross over" echoes earlier instructions given to the patriarchs, such as Abraham's call to leave his homeland, and foreshadows the later crossing of the Jordan River into Canaan. This crossing is a type of baptism, representing a transition from death to life, and prefigures the believer's journey from sin to salvation through Christ.<p><b>So we crossed over the Brook of Zered.</b><br>The Israelites' obedience to God's command is emphasized in this phrase. The act of crossing over the Brook of Zered is a physical demonstration of their faith and readiness to enter into the promises of God. This moment is a fulfillment of God's promise to lead them to a land flowing with milk and honey, and it marks the end of the 38 years of wandering in the desert. The crossing signifies a new beginning for the nation of Israel, as they prepare to face new challenges and conquests in the land of Canaan. This event is reminiscent of other significant crossings in the Bible, such as the crossing of the Red Sea, which was a deliverance from slavery, and the crossing of the Jordan River, which was an entrance into inheritance. Each crossing is a testament to God's faithfulness and power to deliver His people.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/m/moses.htm">Moses</a></b><br>The leader of the Israelites, who is recounting the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness as commanded by God.<br><br>2. <b><a href="/topical/i/israelites.htm">Israelites</a></b><br>The people of God, who are journeying from Egypt to the Promised Land.<br><br>3. <b><a href="/topical/b/brook_zered.htm">Brook Zered</a></b><br>A significant geographical landmark that the Israelites crossed, marking a transition in their journey.<br><br>4. <b><a href="/topical/w/wilderness_journey.htm">Wilderness Journey</a></b><br>The period of 40 years during which the Israelites wandered in the desert before entering the Promised Land.<br><br>5. <b><a href="/topical/g/god's_command.htm">God's Command</a></b><br>The directive from God to move forward in their journey, signifying obedience and trust in His plan.<div class="vheading2">Teaching Points</div><b><a href="/topical/o/obedience_to_god's_commands.htm">Obedience to God's Commands</a></b><br>The Israelites' crossing of the Brook Zered demonstrates their obedience to God's command. This brook formed the boundary line between Edom and Moab, and was the limit of Israel's wanderings in the wilderness. They crossed it thirty-eight years after the doom had been pronounced upon them at Kadesh, and during that period the entire generation of those who had rebelled had died out. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/deuteronomy/2-13.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">Now</span><br /><span class="heb">עַתָּ֗ה</span> <span class="translit">(‘at·tāh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Adverb<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6258.htm">Strong's 6258: </a> </span><span class="str2">At this time</span><br /><br /><span class="word">arise</span><br /><span class="heb">קֻ֛מוּ</span> <span class="translit">(qu·mū)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Imperative - masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6965.htm">Strong's 6965: </a> </span><span class="str2">To arise, stand up, stand</span><br /><br /><span class="word">and cross over</span><br /><span class="heb">וְעִבְר֥וּ</span> <span class="translit">(wə·‘iḇ·rū)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Imperative - masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5674.htm">Strong's 5674: </a> </span><span class="str2">To pass over, through, or by, pass on</span><br /><br /><span class="word">the Brook</span><br /><span class="heb">נַ֣חַל</span> <span class="translit">(na·ḥal)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5158.htm">Strong's 5158: </a> </span><span class="str2">A stream, a winter torrent, a, valley, a shaft</span><br /><br /><span class="word">of Zered.”</span><br /><span class="heb">זָ֑רֶד</span> <span class="translit">(zā·reḏ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - proper - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_2218.htm">Strong's 2218: </a> </span><span class="str2">Zered -- a wadi East of the Dead Sea</span><br /><br /><span class="word">So we crossed over</span><br /><span class="heb">וַֽנַּעֲבֹ֖ר</span> <span class="translit">(wan·na·‘ă·ḇōr)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - first person common plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5674.htm">Strong's 5674: </a> </span><span class="str2">To pass over, through, or by, pass on</span><br /><br /><span class="word">the Brook</span><br /><span class="heb">נַ֥חַל</span> <span class="translit">(na·ḥal)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5158.htm">Strong's 5158: </a> </span><span class="str2">A stream, a winter torrent, a, valley, a shaft</span><br /><br /><span class="word">of Zered.</span><br /><span class="heb">זָֽרֶד׃</span> <span class="translit">(zā·reḏ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - proper - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_2218.htm">Strong's 2218: </a> </span><span class="str2">Zered -- a wadi East of the Dead Sea</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/deuteronomy/2-13.htm">Deuteronomy 2:13 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/deuteronomy/2-13.htm">Deuteronomy 2:13 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/deuteronomy/2-13.htm">Deuteronomy 2:13 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/deuteronomy/2-13.htm">Deuteronomy 2:13 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/deuteronomy/2-13.htm">Deuteronomy 2:13 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/deuteronomy/2-13.htm">Deuteronomy 2:13 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/deuteronomy/2-13.htm">Deuteronomy 2:13 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/deuteronomy/2-13.htm">Deuteronomy 2:13 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/deuteronomy/2-13.htm">Deuteronomy 2:13 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/deuteronomy/2-13.htm">Deuteronomy 2:13 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/deuteronomy/2-13.htm">OT Law: Deuteronomy 2:13 Now rise up and get you over (Deut.
