O objetivo principal desse trabalho foi investigar quais as esperanças que se pode ter e os desafios que se devem esperar do advento dessas novas tecnologias em âmbito educacional, quer seja na sua modalidade formal, quer seja na modalidade não-formal. A fim de atingir esse objetivo mais genérico, outros mais específicos foram traçados: analisar a relação entre os conceitos de educação e tecnologia; relacionar as principais contribuições das TICs para as práticas educacionais; examinar as implicações da política de formação inicial e continuada de professores para uso das tecnologias educacionais; descobrir como as TICs podem mediar a ação pedagógica de forma prática. Optouse então pelo método de pesquisa exploratória de levantamento bibliográfico, a fim de aproximar-se do fenômeno estudado e responder ao problema da pesquisa. Discutiu-se o tema diante da opinião de autores consagrados no meio acadêmico, como Gadotti (2005), Kenski (2007), Takahashi (2000), Giroto (2012) e Levy (2010), dentre outros, todos com vasta e conhecida produção sobre o impacto das novas tecnologias de informação e comunicação na educação. Concluiu-se que as novas tecnologias de informação e comunicação encontram-se em estado de indissociabilidade com relação à educação, sendo, portanto, um meio e não um fim em si mesmas. Portanto, podem trazer um futuro promissor em termos de renovação do conhecimento e de democratização do acesso à informação, mas não sem políticas de inclusão, formação de professores, investimentos em estrutura material e de recursos humanos; do contrário servirá como mais um instrumento de exclusão social e gerador de desigualdades Neste sentido, foram analisados 174 trabalhos que se encontravam disponíveis online e que apresentavam estudos empíricos ou teóricos sobre a aplicabilidade deste tipo de tecnologias no processo de ensino e aprendizagem.
