From the essay The words and images of Michel Foucault, it is possible to visualize the analytical method of Erwin Panofsky. The influence of the art historian on the French philosopher is evident in the phase of &#39;iconological interpretation&#39; proposed by Panofsky, in which the cultural symptomatology finds its notorious place. This symptomatology is searched in the analysis we conducted on three European artists: Um ensaio de análise iconográfica: laços entre a teoria da arte e o método arqueológico RESUMO. Essa sintomatologia é buscada nas análises que realizamos de três artistas da Europa:</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;An essay on iconographic analysis: relations between the theory of art and the archaeological method&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:66239952,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/46603670/An_essay_on_iconographic_analysis_relations_between_the_theory_of_art_and_the_archaeological_method&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/46603670/An_essay_on_iconographic_analysis_relations_between_the_theory_of_art_and_the_archaeological_method"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="2" data-entity-id="20253963" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/20253963/Pappi_E_2006_Argive_Geometric_Figured_Style_The_rule_and_the_exception_Pictorial_pursuits_Figurative_painting_on_Mycenaean_and_Geometric_pottery_Papers_from_two_seminars_at_the_Swedish_Institute_at_Athens_in_1999_and_2001_ed_E_Rystedt_and_B_Wells_Stockholm_2006_">Pappi, E., 2006. This outline of the sources, adaptations and functions of the Mistress of Animals motif in the 7th century BC illustrates how contexts affect our analysis and interpretation of artistic motifs. It is clear that the examination of chronological and geographical distributions, types of find-spot, and the function of the objects decorated is as important as an analysis of the artistic and iconographic elements. When these factors are considered in combination with their material, social and historical contexts, scholars can fine-tune their understanding of the artistic developments. More importantly, such a consideration provides evidence for the significance of the motif in its new culture, potentially illuminating the motivations behind the choice to adopt or adapt the motif or the degree to which ideology may have accompanied iconography when we have clear examples of the transmission of images from one region and/or culture to another. Contexts also give the scholar more perspective when attempting to identify some of the more ambiguous artistic motifs of the Early Iron Age.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;“Influence, inspiration or innovation? Empirical experimentation on three types of mythological imagery – a Classical Greek pot, a frieze from Hellenistic Pergamon and a second-century CE Roman sarcophagus – enables Katharina Lorenz to demonstrate how theoretical approaches to images (specifically, Iconology, Semiotics, and Image Studies) impact the meanings we elicit from Greek and Roman art. A guide to Classical images of myth and also a critical history of Classical archaeology’s attempts to give meaning to pictures, this book establishes a dialogue with the wider field of art history and proposes a new framework for the study of ancient visual culture. It will be essential reading not just for students of classical art history and archaeology, but for anyone interested in the possibilities – and the history – of studying visual culture.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Ancient Mythological Images and their Interpretation.
