They are frequently associated with divine revelation, guidance, and judgment.

Divine Presence and Revelation

Clouds are prominently featured in theophanies, where God reveals Himself to His people. In Exodus 13:21, the Lord leads the Israelites through the wilderness with a pillar of cloud by day: "And the LORD went before them in a pillar of cloud to guide their way by day and in a pillar of fire to give them light by night, so that they could travel by day or night." This cloud signifies God's guidance and protection.

At Mount Sinai, clouds envelop the mountain as God gives the Law to Moses, emphasizing His holiness and the awe-inspiring nature of His presence. Exodus 19:9 states, "The LORD said to Moses, 'Behold, I will come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people may hear when I speak with you and will always put their trust in you.'"

God's Glory and Majesty

Clouds are also a symbol of God's glory. In the dedication of Solomon's Temple, a cloud fills the house of the Lord, signifying His presence. 1 Kings 8:10-11 records, "And when the priests came out of the Holy Place, the cloud filled the house of the LORD, so that the priests could not stand there to minister because of the cloud; for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD."

In the New Testament, during the Transfiguration of Jesus, a bright cloud overshadows Him, and a voice from the cloud declares, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him!" (Matthew 17:5). This event underscores the divine nature of Christ and the Father's approval of Him.

Judgment and Prophecy

Clouds are often associated with divine judgment and eschatological events. In the prophetic literature, clouds are depicted as harbingers of God's impending judgment. Isaiah 19:1 declares, "An oracle concerning Egypt: Behold, the LORD rides on a swift cloud and is coming to Egypt. The idols of Egypt tremble before Him, and the hearts of the Egyptians melt within them."

In the apocalyptic visions of Daniel and Revelation, clouds accompany the coming of the Son of Man. Daniel 7:13 describes, "In my vision in the night I continued to watch, and I saw One like the Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into His presence." Similarly, Revelation 1:7 proclaims, "Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him—even those who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. So shall it be! Amen."

Symbol of Transience and Human Frailty

Clouds also serve as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of human life and the vanity of earthly pursuits. Job 7:9 reflects on this transience: "As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so he who goes down to Sheol will never rise again." This imagery underscores the brevity and uncertainty of life, urging reliance on God rather than temporal things.

Conclusion

Throughout Scripture, clouds are a multifaceted symbol, representing God's presence, glory, and judgment, as well as the transient nature of human life. They remind believers of the majesty and sovereignty of God, His guidance and protection, and the ultimate fulfillment of His promises.
ATS Bible Dictionary
Clouds
In the summer season of Palestine, were an unlooked-for phenomenon, 1 Samuel 12:17,18, and rising from off the Mediterranean, betokened rain, 1 Kings 18:44 Luke 12:54.
