Graphite thus crystallizes in the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/hexagonal-system" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">hexagonal system</a>, in contrast to <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/diamond-gemstone" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">diamond</a>, another form of carbon, that crystallizes in the octahedral or tetrahedral system. Such pairs of differing forms of the same element usually are rather similar in their physical properties, but not so in this case. Graphite is dark gray to black, <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="opaque" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/opaque" data-type="MW">opaque</a>, and very soft (with a <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/Mohs-hardness" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Mohs scale</a> <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/hardness-physics" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">hardness</a> of 1.5), while diamond may be colorless and transparent and is the hardest naturally occurring substance (with a Mohs scale hardness of 10). Graphite is very soft because the individual layers of carbon atoms are not as tightly bound together as the atoms within the layer. It is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity.
