infl ected the discourse of political philosophy, sometimes by way of references to other authors (Kant, Freud, Carl Schmitt). It would appear that we no longer represent the space of politics as, in Max Weber's famous phrase, a \"war of gods\"-that is, a space of confl ict between values and ideologies claiming to embody the universal or, in a post-Marxian conception, a space of projects and processes of social transformation-but have instead lapsed back into imagining politics as an attempt (that may ultimately be doomed to failure) to master the condition of \"primary\" violence in which human groups live and act. This shift (a \"neoclassical\" turn, according to some who point to the infl uence of authors as different as Hannah Arendt and Leo Strauss) is plainly of anthropological inspiration, with the difference that it appeals less to an originary \"human nature\" (and the various ways of conceiving of it) than to the idea of an origin now lost for good, a \"posthistorical\" human nature as it has been transformed or as it subsists, in now unrecognizable form, after one whole cycle of \"culture\"","publication_date":"2016,,","publication_name":"Teaching Philosophy","grobid_abstract_attachment_id":"108181880"},"document_type":"paper","pre_hit_view_count_baseline":null,"quality":"high","language":"en","title":"Violence and Civility: On the Limits of Political Philosophy, by Etienne Balibar","broadcastable":true,"draft":null,"has_indexable_attachment":true,"indexable":true}}["work"]; Violence and Civility, originally published in French in 2010, offers a fascinating lens on the development of Balibar’s thought as well as a prescient intervention in on-going debates in political theory. Through a dazzling set of commentaries on figures including Hobbes, Hegel, and Marx, Balibar examines the limits of political theory’s various attempts to police the boundaries of the political as a space free from violence. These lectures track the antinomies and paradoxes intrinsic to such attempts to argue that the boundary separating political power and violent force is anything but unproblematic. Rather, it is a boundary that needs to be perpetually renegotiated if the precarious space of politics is not to be undone by the extreme violence it threatens to unleash. Balibar proposes that countenancing violence demands something more than a moral discourse of nonviolence that disavows the prevalence of state, structural, and identitarian violence in the contemporary world. It demands novel strategies of “civility” or what Balibar calls “antiviolence.”

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Identity and the Politics of Civility: A Review Essay of Étienne Balibar's _Violence and Civility_ and Marie-Claire Caloz-Tschopp's _Violence, politique et civilité aujourd'hui
Bryan Lueck

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

The Demonic Genius of Politics? This coupling remains hugely influential almost a century after it was formulated. It has become possible to revisit it, firstly, because of the potential for new interdisciplinary conversations. These have opened up ways of understanding violence as a properly social phenomenon and the significance of our vulnerable, social bodies to its reproduction. Secondly, social action on violence has led to recognition as “violence” of varied acts of somatic harm previously not named as such. In the process, expressions of violence reproduced over time and through spaces of socialization (from the intimate to the construction of the nation state) are socially and politically de-sanctioned. Politics and the State could be reconceptualised as essential for reducing (rather than monopolizing) violence and creating conditions to live toget...

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"The Demonic Genius of Politics? To this end, the study looks at the works of selected thinkers and suggests a threefold categorization of existing approaches: a ‘non-problematization of the relationship between violence and politics’ exemplified in the liberal-democratic paradigm, a ‘nonproblematization of violence in politics’ in some critiques of liberal thought and the position of ambivalence, which suggests a historical relationship between violence and politics. It argues that politics does not have to be an arena inherently and unavoidably reliant on the tools of violence. Indeed, politics could be seen as primarily an arena for violence reduction. Social action on violence is one route towards realizing such a goal. However, the ontological assumptions about human violence behind, for instance, the Weberian approach to the modern State remain a conceptual limit to such social action. They have provided an apparently intuitive foundation for why violence and its monopoly must be coupled to our understanding of politics and the State. While there have been philosophical challenges to this, they ultimately fail, it is argued, to provide a focus on violence as a phenomenon with its own distinctions. The tradition of western political theory has tended to reduce politics to the State and dissolve violence in political ends. This tradition was broken at the beginning of the XX century by Weber and Schmitt. Their reflections allow for the linking of politics and violence, and for thought on politics beyond the State. Nevertheless they are not enough to elaborate a concept of politics that fully recognizes its relationship to violence. The conceptual distinction between politics and the political is consolidated in contemporary political theory through authors like Lefort, Rancière, Bourdieu and others. It resolves some of Weber and Schmitt’s insufficiencies, but not all, some of which are quite relevant. One is the relationship between the political and violence, which I wish to analyze in Lefort, Rancière and Bourdieu in this paper. We can formulate two questions on this: 1) is it not true that conceiving politics as something not reduced to the State ends up omitting violence which is also present in the political, as if the only violence were that of the State?; and 2) is it not true that conceiving politics as something not reduced to the State downplays the monopoly of legitimate violence as a characteristic trait of politics? To deal with tension about politics, the political and violence opens at the same time others questions as: is violence emerging only from a conflict or also from a consensus?; is violence a physical objective phenomenom or a symbolic and subjective one?; if politics is not a “place”, so that means violence is ubiquitous?

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

The Meanings of Violence: From Critical Theory to Biopolitics (New York: Routledge, 2019)
Gavin Rae, Emma Ingala

Violence has long been noted to be a fundamental aspect of the human condition. Traditionally, however, philosophical discussions have tended to approach it through the lens of warfare and/or limit it to physical forms. This changed in the twentieth century as the nature and meaning of ‘violence’ itself became a conceptual problem. Guided by the contention that Walter Benjamin’s famous 1921 ‘Critique of Violence’ essay inaugurated this turn to an explicit questioning of violence, this collection brings together an international array of scholars to engage with how subsequent thinkers—Agamben, Arendt, Benjamin, Butler, Castoriadis, Derrida, Fanon, Gramsci, Merleau-Ponty, Sartre, and Schmitt—grappled with the meaning and place of violence. The aim is not to reduce these multiple responses to a singular one, but to highlight the heterogeneous ways in which the concept has been inquired into and the manifold meanings of it that have resulted. To this end, each chapter focuses on a different approach or thinker within twentieth and twenty-first century European philosophy, with many of them tackling the issue through the mediation of other topics and disciplines, including biopolitics, epistemology, ethics, culture, law, politics, and psychoanalysis. As such, the volume will be an invaluable resource for those interested in Critical Theory, Cultural Studies, History of Ideas, Philosophy, Politics, Political Theory, Psychology, and Sociology.
