This article considers Criticaldías\u0026amp;#39; projects that critically situate the discourses of development and progress in relation to histories of science and medicine. How do previous modes of managing the body in the city through medical technologies and surveillance continue to prefigure belonging and citizenship in the present? The chapter theorizes \u0026amp;#39;networks of care and critique\u0026amp;#39; as a historically specific response –led by the feminist, queer and antiracist movements– to the commodification of care and the increasingly complex frontiers of exclusion and inclusion that marks the neoliberal project since the 1980s. Criticaldías\u0026amp;#39; projects often combine elements of archival research, the collective writing of poetic-political texts, street action and performance-readings.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"rebecca close"}],"contributor":[],"dateCreated":"2021-10-06","dateModified":"2024-11-01","datePublished":"2019-01-01","headline":"Technoaffective Reinscriptions: Networks of care and critique 'inside' and 'outside' of Europe in the age of precarity","image":"https://attachments.academia-assets.com/72173332/thumbnails/1.jpg","inLanguage":"en","keywords":["Video Art","Tropical Medicine","Artistic Research","Social Hygiene Movement","The Politics of Care","Decolonial Feminisms","Postdevelopment in practice"],"publication":"Postdevelopment in Practice Alternatives, Economies, Ontologies (eds.) In order to access gender affirming care, trans* people are implicated in a care system that is uncaring in its approaches to trans and gender non-conforming people. However, changes in the ways trans bodies and identities are conceptualized in care spaces has resulted in a refiguring of trans care resulting in a shift in the geographies and spaces of trans. The resulting shift in trans care geographies is an uneven one; both geographically but also in the ways different trans bodies experience these care spaces based on age, gender, race and sexuality. In this thesis, I will explore the ways in which trans* people use digital spaces to reform and work through available networks of care. Drawing from digital research on institutional care websites and YouTube videos as well as auto-ethnographic reflection, I 3 critically address the strategies, techniques and methods implicated in trans* care. Following the work of Gray (2009), by examining these digital spaces of bodily and subjective production my goal is to explore the conditions under which trans* people are cared for and about. By interpreting these digital spaces through the lens of past work on care politics and care geographies, my work examines how care is networked and relational—and asks for a more complicated approach to a care ethics or care practice of the self. Finally, my research points to and demands for a more multi-scalar and relational approach to trans* geographies. In my concluding remarks, I lay out how such an approach would necessarily connect the multiple sites and processes imbricated in the production of and governance of trans* lives.

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

The Art of Being Elsewhere: Neoliberal Institutions of Care
Natasha Lushetich

The being of human beings and, in particular, their wellbeing is profoundly spatial and temporal. We feel well in dramaturgically stimulating, sheltered, yet expansive spaces that lend themselves to daydreaming, much like we feel well in " thick " time that, like a complex melody, textures our existence aurally, kinesthetically, and propriocentrically (influencing our body's sense of balance). This existential relation is created through movement, sound, language, chronotypes, physical and symbolic objects, all of which weave bio-social matrixes, micro-cultural landscapes, even individual inscapes – internalized terrains of symbolic meaning. This essay offers a socio-phenomenological account of a medium-security forensic service unit River House, part of the Bethlem Royal hospital, a psychiatric hospital located in Bromley, south London. Its aim is to articulate the interdependence of practice, space, and inscape, while simultaneously shedding light on a very particular, emergent form of existential vulnerability caused by the increasing precarization, the reponsibilization of the individual, and the culture of blame., the annual open day at Bethlem Royal Hospital, a psychiatric hospital located in two hundred and seventy acres of land in Bromley, south London. Upon entering the immaculately kept hospital gardens, my attention was immediately drawn to a quizzical, wagon-like object made of cardboard, incongruously parked next to car. On closer inspection, the mobile object revealed a tiny door and a sunroof window, made of what resembled pink and blue plexiglass. An energetic middle-aged man, who was later introduced to me as patient 1 X, approached me, explained the purpose of the mobile object: to travel through the hospital and to be taken around the hospital grounds, and asked me if I' d like to have a go. 1 I use the word " patient " in its Latin meaning, to signify suffering and endurance, not passivity. Although the neoliberal " service user " can be seen as less stigmatizing, it also places the responsibility for recovery largely with the patient.

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Hoppania, Hanna-Kaisa & Tiina Vaittinen (coauthored): A Household Full of Bodies: Neoliberalism, Care and "the Political"
Tiina Vaittinen

Global Society, 2014

This paper explores “the political” of political economy through an analysis of neoliberalised care. Borrowing Glyn Daly’s metaphor of the political economy as a disorganised household, where the “political” disrupts the neat order of the oikonomia, we argue that in neoliberalism care is a central site of the political. Through Foucauldian biopolitics we define commodification as a central logic in the governance of care, and situate it in the wider context of neoliberal governmentality. Conceptualising care as a corporeal relation, and following Annemarie Mol’s logic of care, we show how despite the constant attempts to domesticate it, the hegemonic discourse fails to fully subsume care within the “order of the household”. Examining the ruptures produced when care resists its governance, the paper demonstrates how the corporeal relatedness of care continues to open up spaces for the political, hence ensuring that the economy remains political.

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Care of the body: spaces of practice
Janine Wiles

Care-concept, emotion, practice, politics, moral exhortation – is a starting point for critical geographies that cut across diverse fields of interest. Whilst, conventionally, care remains predominantly associated with systems of social support and health care, intellectual engagements with feminist theory, moral geographies, post-colonial theory and reflections on academic practice have all mobilised explorations of care as a central focus. Care, it seems, affords geographers a richness of possibilities through which to critically engage with a range of politically charged discourses. The papers in this special issue focus on critically engaging the trajectory of public discourse which increasingly privileges embodied individuals as primary sites for agency, responsibility and wellbeing as expressed through a logic of autonomy and choice (Mol, 2006). This trajectory is often exclusively attributed to the emergence of a dominant neoliberal politics (Miller and Rose, 2008) but it has diverse roots, some of much longer duration, including classical liberalism and conservative politics (Staeheli and Brown, 2003), but also in working class solidarity and resistance in the face of imposed values (Fox and Smith, 2011). Within this trajectory, new technologies, whether biomedical or discursive, appear to afford new possibilities for self-actualisation but must also intersect with the histories of existing material, moral and ideological landscapes. This intersection of landscapes, which allows for inequality and exclusion coupled with a trajectory that privileges a logic of individual autonomy and choice, may erode even the most limited and bounded spaces for care.

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

V. How can we use vulnerability as an effective paradigm in order to foster collective political initiatives? This essay claims that the idea of care is key to understand the vulnerability framework as being both an epistemic and a political resource to address ethical issues. The first half of the essay recollects several arguments in Adriana Cavarero's and Judith Butler's most recent works, insofar as both theorists have insisted on the notion of vulnerability in order to interpret contemporary political mobilizations. The second part of the essay retraces a constellation of practices of care in the works of several Black and decolonial feminist thinkers situated in different socio-political contexts. Whereas for Christina Sharpe and Saidiya Hartman the focus is on the matter of Blackness and Black lives in their constitutive vulnerability, both Cristina Rivera Garza's and Sayak Valencia's works remarkably insist on the specific socio-political context of today's Mexico. These authors urge the readers to adopt a critical posture when encountering official narratives, also because in their texts they exhibit their own vulnerability. For them, writing, their writing is an ethical demand to imagine alternatives and to foster new entanglements between bodies persisting on the margins, at the limits of the norms that regulate legibility.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"V. Even in feminist care theory, however, the neediness of the body is barely recognized as political. This is somewhat paradoxical, given that the vulnerable body is discursively deeply feminized. Thus, through a deconstructive reading of feminist care theory and Joan Tronto’s (1993) ethics of care in particular, I argue for a new political understanding of care, defined as a corporeal relation. In this conception, the political dimensions of care are no longer understood in terms of work or the moral dispositions enabled by caring, as the existing literature largely suggests. Rather, the political relevance of care is seen as departing from that which makes the work of care an absolute necessity: namely, the needy body that belongs to each and every one of us. Through its neediness, the vulnerable body exposes itself as a constant opening of the political, the recognition of which also leads to an alternative type of ethics. It contrasts the notion of the precarious body, central to critical theorists like Judith Butler, with an alternative phenomenological understanding, locating the political significance of the body in spontaneous movement (Arendt) and competence (Merleau-Ponty). Attending to either precariousness or mobile-capable bodies reveals distinct dimensions of radical democratic struggles. While precariousness addresses the unequal distribution of social-material conditions, it tends to overshadow the shared lived experience of freedom among citizens countering inhibitions of free movement, often motivated by their disproportionate exposure to precarious conditions in the first place. From a phenomenological perspective, public action is permitted by capable and mobile bodies. It is argued that public space opens the power of “we-can” bodies by soliciting citizens’ movement among others and their engagement in shared projects, according to their bodily capacities. Pluralistic interaction, aiming to maintain or create free spaces of movement, is presented as the political practice of freedom par excellence, exemplified by radical democratic walking practices in the Black civil rights movement.

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Making the Most of the ‘Crisortunity’: Multidisciplinary Provocations on Techno-fixes and Precarity
Camille Intson

Vol. 3, Iss. 2 (DHSI Conference & Colloquium 2021)

What does a robust and useful technological response to a crisis, aware and attentive to the biases and messages of digital media, look like? This paper responds to provocations and questions posed during our panel, Emergent-cy: Critical Digital Humanities in the Time of COVID at the Digital Humanities Summer Institute 2021 Conference & Colloquium, by attendees who particularly responded to the notion of "crisortunity" raised by Arun Jacob during the panel. This paper centres on crisortunity, a neologism coined by the cartoon The Simpsons in episode 11 of season 6 ("Fear") and since expanded upon by scholars like Tanner Mirrlees, within our different disciplines ("Ghoulish"). Crisortunity-a crisis situation that also presents the opportunity for someone to gain something in return-unifies our offerings to the digital humanities. While contributors to this paper come from a range of fields-museum studies, journalism studies, media studies, and research creation-our responses are linked by an attentiveness to the uneven precarities and vulnerabilities so often symptomatic of institutional responses to crises, as well as the production, circulation, and management of information. Building on critical work that explores the ways that technologies from electronic monitoring of those serving parole or awaiting trial (Benjamin) to electronic benefits transfer systems in the United States social service system (Eubanks) are mobilized to fix social problems, we argue that techno-fixes often fail to fix; instead, they reinstate unequal and inequitable relations in the name of repair. In contrast, when communities organize to respond to crises on their own, tensions may arise between attempts for selforganization and anti-capitalist modes of creating and community. This paper thus explores the implications of qualifying something as a "crisis" with a discrete beginning and end, and what it might mean to offer fixes to something that is broken rather than curating, managing, repairing, or caring for something that is not yet irreparable (Gál). By leveraging this concept across our four disciplines, we hope to explore the various uses of terming something a "crisis." While in the present context, the term crisis might bring to mind the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, crises can be financial, institutional, and/or architectural. For whom do crises toll? And for whom are they not crises at all, but opportunities to further leverage power, influence, and resources in the name of protecting investments? As we explore, care infrastructures are often depleted in favour of technofixes and precarious labour that continue, rather than break from, pre-crisis power structures and institutional modes. In our first section, Haley Bryant tackles the question of remediation during the COVID-19 pandemic in the museum field, where an accelerated focus on digital solutions warns of an increasing reliance on precarious labour and compromised practices of museological care. In the following section, Nelanthi Hewa examines how Substack and other newsletter platforms have positioned themselves as the saviours of journalism to ask whose crisis is solved, and whose is extended, when journalism is platformed. Camille Intson reflects on a research creation endeavour and international digital media gallery entitled Intermissions: Works for a New World, which emerged in response to the pandemic's impact on art and culture. In the final section, Arun Jacob discusses the infrastructural politics of the inherent techno-solutionism in crisis architecture.

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

See full PDFdownloadDownload PDF

Loading Preview

Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
