The direction of influence goes both ways: Gothic literary elements have arguably influenced medical writing, such as the nineteenth-century clinical case study. In this second decade of the twenty-first century, it is apt to freshly examine intersections between the two fields. The closing years of the twentieth century saw the emergence of medical humanities, an interdisciplinary blend of humanities and social science approaches under the dual goals of using arts to enhance medical education and interrogating medical practice and discourse. Analysis of period medical discourse, legal categories and medical technologies can enrich literary criticism in richly contextualising fictional works within medical practices. Such criticism can be seen as extending the drive towards historicised and localised criticism that has characterised much in Gothic studies in recent decades. Our field offers textual strategies for analysing the processes by which medical discourse, medical processes and globalised biotechnological networks can, at times, do violence to human bodies and minds – both of patient and practitioner. Cultural studies of medicine analyse and unmask this violence. Senf 3 who includes it in her vampiric inquiries. Jonathan Z. Smith 4 in turn employs religious perspective to analyse the theories of the Other. An extensive collection of essays entitled Parasites, Worms, and the Human Body in Religion and Culture 5 examines the notion of parasitism in multiple contexts but mostly in its figurative meaning. Aspects of parasitism in literary deconstructive criticism are explored by J. Hillis Miller, 6 while Michel Serres 7 sees the parasite-host relations as a crucial model in literature, society and technology. The works of the latter two authors are examined in more detail in the next section to explain why their approach to the parasite and parasitism is inapplicable to this study. In my choice of literary and scientific texts analysed I am mostly indebted to the systematic overview of parasites in nineteenth-century literature done by Anne-Julia Zwierlein in her article "From Parasitology to Parapsychology: Parasites in Nineteenth Century Science and Literature," 8 in which she presents particular parasite-related features of selected Victorian texts. The following paragraphs summarise and discuss Zwierlein's article in detail in order to outline the scope of its influence on this work as well as the directions in which it deviates from her text. Zwierlein begins by describing John Ruskin's indignation at science's apparent obsession with distasteful subjects: the unpleasant side of animal life. One can also observe in Poe’s texts an attempt to satirize, criticize and leave record of his ambitious interest in the nineteenth-century medicine and medical practices. America was witnessing the rise of a scientific era where most of the scientific theories as known today were being developed. On the other hand, America was under the influence of sensationalism: pseudoscience and the pseudoscientific theories, which were in the borders of hoax and truth. The growing popularity of scientific sensationalism by physics in the American prewar period, professional medical publications, treaties such as Klecksographien by Justinus Kerner (which was source of inspiration, also, to the well-known Hermann Rorschach), magazines, English periodicals of the 1830s and theatre, influenced Poe and his creations significantly. This is reflected in some of Poe’s stories: dyspnea, anxiety, paroxysm, coma, suspended animation, use of prosthetics, bio-augmentation, bio-modification and epilepsia in “Loss of Breath;” monomania, catatonia, catalepsia, narcolepsia and inbreed in “Eleanora” and “The Fall of the House of Usher;” cataplexy in “Berenice;” miasmatic theories, Spanish influenza, and yellow fever in “The Masque of the Read Death;” hallucinogens, hypnotics, sedatives and ancient anesthesia in “The Man that was Used Up,” proboscis and cyclopia in “Bon-Bon;” analgesia in “The Business Man;” and tuberculosis in “Ligeia.” This article will delve deeper in the medical aspect of these scientific narrations in Edgar Allan Poe’s work. Taking Stoker’s famous novel as a case in point, I mean to show that the men of the novel, embodiments of Reason and Empire, gathered around the guiding medical intelligence of professor Van Helsing, act upon the bodies of the vampirized women (Lucy and Mina) in a way that is the metaphorical expression of the symbolic violence perpretated against women socially. These developments not only herald a new style of scientific thinking, but also foreshadow a number of developments still relevant for contemporary culture. In other words, I read Dracula as a window into biomedical and bio-political challenges surfacing in the 1890s, but evolving into major research areas. Rather than seeing science and literature as separate cultures, moreover, Dracula as a case study reveals how techno-scientific and literary developments mutually challenge and mirror one another, so that we may use Stoker’s novel to deepen our understanding of contemporary science-related developments and vice versa. Dracula provides a window into fin-de-siècle research practices, collating various disciplines (haematology, virology, psychotherapy, neurology) into a genealogic Gesamtbild. Thus, Stoker’s novel elucidates the techno-scientific and socio-cultural constellation into which psychoanalysis was born. These are the celebrated 'St Michan's mummies'. When I was taken to see them, sixty years ago, I already knew of St Michan's from M.R. James, whose tales of supernatural terror entirely possessed my nine-year-old imagination; and on entering the crypt, with its rank, earthy smell, it was as though my schoolfellows and I had stumbled into the pages of 'The Treasure of Abbot Thomas', 'Canon Alberic's Scrapbook', or another of the horrid inventions in Ghost Stories of an Antiquary. Led past stacks of disintegrating coffins, from which skulls and yellowing bones spilled across the dusty floor, we were introduced to the crypt's principal attraction: the strangely preserved corpse of the so-called 'Crusader'-a gigantic figure whose piously crossed legs had been broken to fit them into his narrow sarcophagus. The leathery cadaver was propped in a sitting position, so that visitors could shake the Crusader's carefully extended right hand, its taut skin burnished over the years to a nicotine-coloured gloss. The sacristan, with ghoulish satisfaction, informed us that this hand was now so worn from years of morbid greeting that it would soon have to be replaced. Noticing that he did not say from whence the substitute might be obtained, we instinctively clenched our fists and thrust them as deep into our pockets as they would go. There's nothing at all in these dark passageways for them to eat-so it has been generally concluded that they must be [dramatic pause] a breed of [longer pause] CANNIBAL SPIDERS!" We trembled with proper disgust at this revelation, sensing some weird connection between these atrocious arachnids and the cadaverous scene of their predations. A hundred years earlier, the young Bram Stoker must have been subjected to a similarly unsettling encounter, for it was from his childhood recollection of St Michan's that Dracula seems have grown: in it the vampire-hunters enter a mouldering vault stacked with coffins, 'its walls fluffy and heavy with dust, and in the corners...masses of spiders' webs'. 1 The drug was sometimes associated with the dark arts, as it is in Macbeth, where 'Witch's mummy' [4.1.23] is among the ingredients of a concoction so powerful that it can raise even the dead Banquo from his grave; but its advocates included some of the most distinguished physicians and scientists of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries-prominent among them Queen Elizabeth's own surgeon, John Banister, as well Francis Bacon, Sir Kenelm Digby, and no less a scientist than Robert Boyle. The prescriptions espoused by such men continued to be dispensed until well into the eighteenth century, when Robert James's Pharmacopeia Universalis (1747) advised that Mummy resolves coagulated Blood, and is said to be effectual in purging the Head, against pains of the spleen, a Cough, Inflation of the body, Obstruction of the Menses and other uterine Affections: Outwardly it is of service for consolidating Wounds. The skin is recommended in difficult Labours, and hysteric affections, and for a Withering and Contraction of the Joints. The Fat strengthens, discusses, eases pains, cure Contractions, mollifies the hardness of Cicatrices, and fill up the pits left by the Measles. The Bones dried, discuss, astringe, stop all Sorts of Fluxes, and are therefore useful for Catarrh, Flux of the Menses, Dysentery, and Lientery, and mitigate pains in the joints. The Marrow is highly commended for Contractions of the Limbs. In Machen’s stories, the sensationalism is meant to create a feeling of horror and disgust that hinges on the cruelty the public had begun to associate with experimental medical science. The narratives also engage with nineteenth-century perspectives on degeneration, women, and rape. Machen’s use of a sexualised rape metaphor dehumanises women and retains a gendered doctor-patient relationship.
