Also, perforated plate flow conditioners designed to improve flow distribution upstream of an orifice plate flow meter typically have 50–60% free area but these generally employ a non-uniform distribution of holes of several sizes to encourage the formation of a fully developed pipe flow velocity distribution. In this study, therefore, numerical investigations on the flow characteristics with the various perforated plates have been performed and then compared to the case without a perforated plate. Three different models are adopted such as a flat perforated plate, a convex perforated plate in the direction of the inlet, and a convex perforated plate in the direction of the outlet. Simulation results show that the pressure drop with and without perforated plates are similar each other. However, it can be found that that the different shaped perforated plates influence the velocity contour, flow uniformity index, and location of the fully developed fluid flow. These results can be used as a practical guide to the best design of pipe with the perforated plate. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=perforated%20plate" title="perforated plate">perforated plate</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flow%20uniformity" title=" flow uniformity"> flow uniformity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pipe%20turbulent%20flow" title=" pipe turbulent flow"> pipe turbulent flow</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=CFD%20%28Computational%20Fluid%20Dynamics%29" title=" CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) "> CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/23752/a-numerical-study-on-the-flow-in-a-pipe-with-perforated-plates" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/23752.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">691</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">6</span> A Study on Solutions to Connect Distribution Power Grid up to Renewable Energy Sources at KEPCO</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Seung%20Yoon%20Hyun">Seung Yoon Hyun</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hyeong%20Seung%20An"> Hyeong Seung An</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Myeong%20Ho%20Choi"> Myeong Ho Choi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sung%20Hwan%20Bae"> Sung Hwan Bae</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yu%20Jong%20Sim"> Yu Jong Sim</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In 2015, the southern part of the Korean Peninsula has 8.6 million poles, 1.25 million km power lines, and 2 million transformers, etc. It is the massive amount of distribution equipments which could cover a round-trip distance from the earth to the moon and 11 turns around the earth. These distribution equipments are spread out like capillaries and supplying power to every corner of the Korean Peninsula. In order to manage these huge power facility efficiently, KEPCO use DAS (Distribution Automation System) to operate distribution power system since 1997. DAS is integrated system that enables to remotely supervise and control breakers and switches on distribution network. Using DAS, we can reduce outage time and power loss. KEPCO has about 160,000 switches, 50%(about 80,000) of switches are automated, and 41 distribution center monitoring&control these switches 24-hour 365 days to get the best efficiency of distribution networks. However, the rapid increasing renewable energy sources become the problem in the efficient operation of distributed power system. (currently 2,400 MW, 75,000 generators operate in distribution power system). In this paper, it suggests the way to interconnect between renewable energy source and distribution power system. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=distribution" title="distribution">distribution</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=renewable" title=" renewable"> renewable</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=connect" title=" connect"> connect</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=DAS%20%28Distribution%20Automation%20System%29" title=" DAS (Distribution Automation System)"> DAS (Distribution Automation System)</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/45103/a-study-on-solutions-to-connect-distribution-power-grid-up-to-renewable-energy-sources-at-kepco" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/45103.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">621</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5</span> Mooring Analysis of Duct-Type Tidal Current Power System in Shallow Water</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chul%20H.%20Jo">Chul H. Tidal current power (TCP) has been proposed as an alternative energy source because of its predictability and reliability. By applying a duct and single point mooring (SPM) system, a TCP device can amplify the generating power and keep its position properly. Because the generating power is proportional to cube of the current stream velocity, amplifying the current speed by applying a duct to a TCP system is an effective way to improve the efficiency of the power device. An SPM system can be applied at any water depth and is highly cost effective. Simple installation and maintenance procedures are also merits of an SPM system. In this study, we designed an SPM system for a duct-type TCP device for use in shallow water. Motions of the duct are investigated to obtain the response amplitude operator (RAO) as the magnitude of the transfer function. Parameters affecting the stability of the SPM system such as the fairlead departure angle, current velocity, and the number of clamp weights are analyzed and/or optimized. Wadam and OrcaFlex commercial software is used to design the mooring line. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mooring%20design" title="mooring design">mooring design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=parametric%20analysis" title=" parametric analysis"> parametric analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=RAO%20%28Response%20Amplitude%20Operator%29" title=" RAO (Response Amplitude Operator)"> RAO (Response Amplitude Operator)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=SPM%20%28Single%20Point%20Mooring%29" title=" SPM (Single Point Mooring)"> SPM (Single Point Mooring)</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/42998/mooring-analysis-of-duct-type-tidal-current-power-system-in-shallow-water" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/42998.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">289</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4</span> Optimal Design of 3-Way Reversing Valve Considering Cavitation Effect</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Myeong-Gon%20Lee">Myeong-Gon Lee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yang-Gyun%20Kim"> Yang-Gyun Kim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tae-Young%20Kim"> Tae-Young Kim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Seung-Ho%20Han"> Seung-Ho Han</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The high-pressure valve uses one set of 2-way valves for the purpose of reversing fluid direction. If there is no accurate control device for the 2-way valves, lots of surging can be generated. The surging is a kind of pressure ripple that occurs in rapid changes of fluid motions under inaccurate valve control. To reduce the surging effect, a 3-way reversing valve can be applied which provides a rapid and precise change of water flow directions without any accurate valve control system. However, a cavitation occurs due to a complicated internal trim shape of the 3-way reversing valve. The cavitation causes not only noise and vibration but also decreasing the efficiency of valve-operation, in which the bubbles generated below the saturated vapor pressure are collapsed rapidly at higher pressure zone. The shape optimization of the 3-way reversing valve to minimize the cavitation effect is necessary. In this study, the cavitation index according to the international standard ISA was introduced to estimate macroscopically the occurrence of the cavitation effect. Computational fluid dynamic analysis was carried out, and the cavitation effect was quantified by means of the percent of cavitation converted from calculated results of vapor volume fraction. In addition, the shape optimization of the 3-way reversing valve was performed by taking into account of the percent of cavitation. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=3-Way%20reversing%20valve" title="3-Way reversing valve">3-Way reversing valve</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cavitation" title=" cavitation"> cavitation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=shape%20optimization" title=" shape optimization"> shape optimization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vapor%20volume%20fraction" title=" vapor volume fraction"> vapor volume fraction</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/17230/optimal-design-of-3-way-reversing-valve-considering-cavitation-effect" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/17230.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">371</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3</span> Development of Numerical Model to Compute Water Hammer Transients in Pipe Flow</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jae-Young%20Lee">Jae-Young Lee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Woo-Young%20Jung"> Woo-Young Jung</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Myeong-Jun%20Nam"> Myeong-Jun Nam</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Water hammer is a hydraulic transient problem which is commonly encountered in the penstocks of hydropower plants. The numerical model was developed to estimate the transient behavior of pressure waves in pipe systems. The computational algorithm was proposed to model the water hammer phenomenon in a pipe system with pump shutdown at midstream and sudden valve closure at downstream. To predict the pressure head and flow velocity as a function of time as a result of rapidly closing a valve and pump shutdown, two boundary conditions at the ends considering pump operation and valve control can be implemented as specified equations of the pressure head and flow velocity based on the characteristics method. It was shown that the effects of transient flow make it determine the needs for protection devices, such as surge tanks, surge relief valves, or air valves, at various points in the system against overpressure and low pressure. It produced reasonably good performance with the results of the proposed transient model for pipeline systems. The proposed numerical model can be used as an efficient tool for the safety assessment of hydropower plants due to water hammer. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=water%20hammer" title="water hammer">water hammer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hydraulic%20transient" title=" hydraulic transient"> hydraulic transient</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pipe%20systems" title=" pipe systems"> pipe systems</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=characteristics%20method" title=" characteristics method"> characteristics method</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/96274/development-of-numerical-model-to-compute-water-hammer-transients-in-pipe-flow" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/96274.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">136</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2</span> Feasibility Study on a Conductive-Type Cooling System for an Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Generator </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yang-Gyun%20Kim">Yang-Gyun Kim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Eun-Taek%20Woo"> Eun-Taek Woo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Myeong-Gon%20Lee"> Myeong-Gon Lee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yun-Hyun%20Cho"> Yun-Hyun Cho</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Seung-Ho%20Han"> Seung-Ho Han</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> For the sustainable development of wind energy, energy industries have invested in the development of highly efficient wind turbines such as an axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) generator. The AFPM generator, however, has a history of overheating on the surface of the stator, so that power production decreases significantly. A proper cooling system, therefore, is needed. Although a convective-type cooling system has been developed, the size of the air blower must be increased when the generator’s capacity exceeds 2.5 MW. In this paper, we proposed a newly developed conductive-type cooling system using a heat pipe wound to the stator of a 2.5 MW AFPM generator installed on an offshore wind turbine. The numerical results showed that the temperatures on the stator surface using convective-type cooling system and the proposed conductive-type cooling system at thermal saturation were 60 and 76°C, respectively, which met the requirements for power production. The temperatures of the permanent magnet cased by the radiant heating from the stator surface were 53°C and 66°C, respectively, in each case. As a result, the permanent magnet did not reach the malfunction temperature. Although the cooling temperatures in the case of the conductive-type cooling system were higher than that of the convective-type cooling system, the relatively small size of the water pump and radiators make a light-weight design of the AFPM generator possible. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wind%20turbine" title="wind turbine">wind turbine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=axial%20flux%20permanent%20magnet%20%28AFPM%29%20generator" title=" axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) generator"> axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) generator</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=conductive-type%20cooling%20system" title=" conductive-type cooling system"> conductive-type cooling system</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/14914/feasibility-study-on-a-conductive-type-cooling-system-for-an-axial-flux-permanent-magnet-generator" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/14914.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">327</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1</span> A New Direction of Urban Regeneration: Form-Based Urban Reconstruction through the Idea of Bricolage</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hyejin%20Song">Hyejin Song</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jin%20Baek"> Jin Baek </a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Based on the idea of bricolage that a new meaning beyond that of each of objects can be created through combination and juxtaposition of various objets, this study finds a way of morphological-recomposing of urban space through combination and juxtaposition of existing urban fabric and new fabric and suggests this idea as new direction of urban regeneration. This study sets concept of bricolage as a philosophical ground of interpreting contemporary urban situation. In this concept, urban objects such as buildings from various zeitgeists are positively considered as potential textures which can construct meaningful context. Seoul, as the city having long history and experiencing colonization and development, appears dynamic urban structure full of various objects from various periods. However, in contrast with successful plazas and streets in Europe, objects in Seoul do not make a meaningful context as public space due to thoughtless development. This study defines this situation as ‘disorgnized-fabric’. Following the concept of bricolage, to find the way for those existing scattered objects to be organized as a context of meaningful public space, this study firstly researches the case of successful public space by morphological analysis. Secondly, this study carefully explores urban space in Seoul, and draws figure-ground diagram to grasp the form of current urban fabric by various urban-objects. As a result of exploration, a lot of urban spaces from Myeong-dong, one of vibrant commercial district in Seoul, to declining residential area are judged as having potential fabric which can become meaningful context by just small adjustment of relationship between existing objects. This study also confirmed that by inserting a new object with consideration of form of existing fabric, it is possible to accord a new context as plaza to existing void which have broken as several parts. This study defines it as form-based urban reconstruction through the idea of bricolage, and suggests that it could be one of philosophical ground of successful urban regeneration. <p
