He worked in his profession through the 2nd half of the 20th century in Hungary—a stormy period, especially for intellectuals with political interests. His memoire contains several strata: personal life, family history, political events, which he took part in and also shaped in his community, and his career as a grade teacher. These strata have a common link: the pastoral aspect of his profession. In our view this aspect is connected to his teacher training, which happened during a transitional period between 1944 and 1947. The grade teacher training system in this period was a secondary educational form in which the confessions had still a remarkable role. Imre Toth had to practice his profession after 1948 in a new area, under the communist dictatorship, which tried to isolate the citizens in order to build up the new socialist society. In the first half our paper we looked through the role of recollections in historical researches and we wanted to point out how the author used his biography to reconstruct his self-identity. study we intend to analyze Imre Toth’s memoire who was a primary school teacher in Pest-Pilis-Solt county, Hungary. He worked in his profession through the 2nd half of the 20th century in Hungary—a stormy period, especially for intellectuals with political interests. His memoire contains several strata: personal life, family history, political events, which he took part in and also shaped in his community, and his career as a grade teacher. These strata have a common link: the pastoral aspect of his profession. In our view this aspect is connected to his teacher training, which happened during a transitional period between 1944 and 1947. The grade teacher training system in this period was a secondary educational form in which the confessions had still a remarkable role. Imre Toth had to practice his profession after 1948 in a new area, under the communist dictatorship, which tried to isolate the citizens in order to build up the new socialist society. In the first half our paper we looked through the role of recollections in historical researches and we wanted to point out how the author used his biography to reconstruct his self-identity.
