And already, He being not far distant from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Therefore neither did I count myself worthy to come to You; but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>For I also am a man appointed under authority, having soldiers under me; and I say to this <i>one</i>, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does <i>it</i>.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And Jesus having heard these things, marveled at him; and having turned to the crowd following Him, He said, <span class="red">“I say to you, not even in Israel did I find such great faith.”</span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And having returned to the house, those having been sent found the servant in good health. </p><p class="hdg">Jesus Raises a Widow's Son</p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And it came to pass on the next <i>day</i>, He went into a town called Nain, and His disciples were going with Him, and a great crowd. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And as He drew near to the gate of the town, also behold, <i>one</i> having died was being carried out, <i>the</i> only begotten son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a considerable crowd of the town was with her. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And the Lord having seen her, was moved with compassion on her and said to her, <span class="red">“Do not weep.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And having come up, He touched the bier; and those bearing <i>it</i> stopped. And He said, <span class="red">“Young man, I say to you, Arise!”</span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And the dead <i>man</i> sat up and began to speak, and He gave him to his mother. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And fear seized all, and they began glorifying God, saying, “A great prophet has risen up among us!” and, “God has visited His people!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And this report concerning Him went out in all Judea and all the surrounding region. </p><p class="hdg">John's Inquiry<br /><span class="cross">(Matthew 11:1-6)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And his disciples brought word to John concerning all these things. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And having summoned a certain two his disciples, John sent <i>them</i> to the Lord saying, “Are You the coming <i>One</i>, or are we to look for another?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And the men having come to Him said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are You the coming <i>One</i>, or are we to look for another?’” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>At that very hour, He healed many of diseases and afflictions and evil spirits, and He granted many blind to see. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And answering, He said to them, <span class="red">“Having gone, relate to John what you have seen and heard: Blind receive sight, lame walk, lepers<span class="fn"><a href="#fna" title="Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases. See Leviticus 13.">a</a></span> are cleansed and deaf hear, dead are raised, poor are gospelized. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And blessed is whoever shall not be offended in Me.”</span> </p><p class="hdg">Jesus Testifies about John<br /><span class="cross">(Matthew 11:7-19; Luke 1:5-25; Luke 16:14-17)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And the messengers of John having departed, He began to speak to the crowds concerning John: <span class="red">“What have you gone out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by <i>the</i> wind? <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>But what have you gone out to see? A man arrayed in fine clothing? Behold, those in splendid clothing and living in luxury are in palaces.</span> </p><p class="red"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>But what have you gone out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and <i>one</i> more excellent than a prophet. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>This is he concerning whom it has been written:</p><p class="indent1stlinered">‘Behold, I send My messenger before your face,</p><p class="indentred2"> who will prepare Your way before You.’<span class="fn"><a href="#fnb" title="Malachi 3:1">b</a></span> </p><p class="red"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>I say to you, no one among <i>those</i> born of women is greater than John; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And all the people having heard, even the tax collectors, declared God righteous, having been baptized <i>with</i> the baptism of John. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the counsel of God as to themselves, not having been baptized by him. </p><p class="red"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>“To what therefore will I liken the men of this generation? And to what are they like? <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>They are like to little children sitting in <i>the</i> marketplace and calling to one another, saying:</p><p class="indent1stlinered">‘We piped to you, and you did not dance;</p><p class="indentred2"> we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’ </p><p class="red"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>For John the Baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a man, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and of sinners!’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And wisdom was justified by all her children.” </p><p class="hdg">A Sinful Woman Anoints Jesus</p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And one of the Pharisees was asking Him that He should eat with him, and having entered into the house of the Pharisee, He reclined. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner. And she having known that He had reclined in the Pharisee’s house, having taken an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>and having stood behind Him at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with the tears, and she was wiping <i>them</i> with the hairs of her head, and was kissing His feet, and was anointing <i>them</i> with the fragrant oil. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And the Pharisee, the <i>one</i> having invited Him, having seen, spoke within himself, saying, “If this were a prophet, He would have known who and what the woman <i>is</i> who touches Him; for she is a sinner.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And answering, Jesus said to him, <span class="red">“Simon, I have something to say to you.”</span></p><p class="reg"> And he says, “Teacher, say <i>it</i>.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span><span class="red">“There were two debtors to a certain creditor. The one owed five hundred denarii,<span class="fn"><a href="#fnc" title="A denarius was customarily a day's wage for a laborer (see Matthew 20:2)">c</a></span> and the other fifty. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>They having nothing to pay, he forgave both. Therefore which of them will love him more?”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>Simon answering, said, “I take it that <i>he</i> to whom he forgave the most.”</p><p class="reg"> And He said to him, <span class="red">“You have judged rightly.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>And having turned to the woman, He was saying to Simon, <span class="red">“Do you see this woman? I entered into your house; you did not give water for My feet, but she wet My feet with her tears and wiped <i>them</i> with her hair. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>You did not give to Me a kiss, but from which <i>time</i> I came in, she herself has not ceased kissing My feet. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>You did not anoint My head with oil, but she herself anointed My feet with fragrant oil. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>Therefore I say to you this: Her many sins have been forgiven, for she loved much; but to whom little is forgiven, he loves little.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>And He said to her, <span class="red">“Your sins have been forgiven.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>And those reclining began to say within themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>And He said to the woman, <span class="red">“Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”</span><A name="fn"><br /><br /></p><A name="fna"></a><span class="footnotesbot">a</span> <span class="fnverse">22</span> <span class="footnote">Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases.
