Each case is calculated with time-domain flooding simulation, assuming quasi-static motions and calm sea, thus enabling evaluation of the righting lever curve during the flooding process. The ship survivability is analysed based on requirements for a sufficient reserve stability. The proposed method is demonstrated with a large passenger ship design. Based on the detailed investigation of the results, the effects of various design changes are studied. Furthermore, the impact of waves on the flooding process is studied. In a continually evolving industry such as shipping, the need for regular review of damage models is paramount. This paper reviews damage assessment models commonly used in the maritime industry. In particular, the paper consolidates the information that is required for damage assessment, and identifies the different input variables and output parameters for several different models. The results of the review are tabulated in a series of handy look-up tables that can be used by both academics, and industry practitioners. Once ship compartments are flooded to an extended level, the transverse stability starts to be affected and if the situation become dangerous, it can become critical or failing beyond the lower threshold values. In this damaged situation, a proper and accurate calculation and assessment of stability is very important. Calculation of damage stability for flooding situations is a very important subject for those who work in design and operation of ships. However, the subject was treated extensively in respect of tanker ships and less in respect of multipurpose cargo ships. The aim of work presented in this paper is to highlight some particular situations of flooding of compartments on board a multipurpose cargo ship when the stability parameters are decreasing enough so that fails to comply with recommended criteria. The particularity of the study for this type of ships came from the fact that are fitted with large box type cargo holds which in case of flooding are generating large free surface effects with a high negative impact on ship's stability. Thus, four situations of flooding are presented and the analysis of stability parameters are illustrated in line with the actual regulations, in respect of damage stability, established by international conventions. Based on the results of calculations, the study gives recommendations regarding the actions to be taken in order to limit the dangerous consequences of such situations. Despite the need for intrinsic differences in construction, increasingly, the acceptable level of safety for the navies is becoming equivalent to those of merchant vessels under civil law. Navies are resorting to Classification Societies for assistance in this matter. Rules and regulations of the Classification Societies for ships are set within the framework of international law overseen by International Maritime Organization (IMO), particularly the international convention for the safety of life at sea (SOLAS). These "IMO" agreements are not always appropriate for the majority of warships, so that the military mission demand solutions in the design and operation that are not fully compatible with the philosophy of the conventions "IMO" and prescriptive solutions. Separate rules of the Classification Societies of the conventions "IMO", to apply to ships of war, create a vacuum that can lead to confusion. This confusion can be misinterpreted and as a result there can be a drop in safety standards. Stability in case of collision is a critical theme to maintain buoyancy in ships. These aspects are even more critical given the increasing size of the boats and the growing number of passengers and crews onboard. Both experience and performed studies demonstrate that the most dangerous issue for the ships with closed deck is the impact of an accumulation of water on the deck.
