Rather, we must examine their roles as inalienable objects within complex assemblages of ritual paraphernalia. Prestige among historic Pueblo groups is anchored in religious authority, which in turn is validated by possession of material objects including ritual paraphernalia and rare materials. Materials such as feathers, shell, and precious stones are used in ritual, and the procurement, distribution, and use of these sacra is often proscribed to specific religious roles and contexts. I argue that similar systems were operant during the preHispanic period. As exotic materials were exchanged between different regions of the preHispanic Southwest, so too were embedded ideologies regarding their use within a suite of cult objects, and ideologies regarding the social roles of the persons that possessed them. My study addresses the construction and circulation of ritual paraphernalia and exotic trade goods between elite sodalities and kin groups during the Chacoan and the post-Chacoan periods, A.D. 875-1300, through examination of artifact technologies, distributions, and depositional contexts. During the late expansion of the Chaco system, Chacoan ritual objects were selectively replicated at allied centers along the Chacoan periphery. The distribution of Chacoan ritual paraphernalia beyond the San Juan Basin coincides with important nodes in macro-regional exotic exchange networks, suggesting that shared religious affiliation between distant leaders facilitated the exchange of exotic materials—and conversely, that exchange of exotic materials prompted the exchange of religious ceremonies between regions. As Chacoan hegemony unraveled during the 12th century, Chacoan ritual paraphernalia appeared at rising centers in new regions; as did new patterns in the acquisition, distribution, and use of ritually significant exotic materials. I argue that during the post-Chacoan period, the material foundations of Chacoan theocracy were co-opted by leaders in peripheral regions to create continuity in a time of political rupture. Political economy models examine the ways in which power is constructed and exercised through the manipulation of material transfers, mainly production and distribution. Research along these lines emphasizes regional redistribution, wealth and staple finance, debt and reciprocity, and regional integration through core/periphery relations. Agency models, on the other hand, explore the social aspects of manufacture, circulation, and consumption to infer the processes by which power is negotiated and contested. Work using this framework focuses on the manner by which meaning and value are assigned to, and become fixed in, social valuables, as well as the moral and emotional dimensions of allocation and consumption. Some of it is undeniable, or perhaps, strong evidence of contact and influence, while others may just be reaching to find influence based on minor similarities. These markets produced external revenues that could be used to achieve political goals. Conversely, commercialized systems required investment in public goods that incentivize the development of market cooperation and “open markets,” where buyers and sellers from across social sectors and diverse communities could engage in exchange as economic equals within marketplaces. In this article, we compare market development at the Late Postclassic sites of Chetumal, Belize, and Tlaxcallan, Mexico. We identified a restricted market at Chetumal, using the distribution of exotic goods, particularly militarily and ritually charged obsidian projectile points; in contrast, an open market was built at Tlaxcallan. Guiding this study is the view that the social organization of Chunchucmil represents a synthesis of two systems in which portable wealth consumption plays a large role. Following Dahlin and Ardren (2002), I suggest that Chunchucmil is a trade city operating under the direction of corporate power strategists with residential corporate groups contributing to a market place economy. Specifically, this study examines the distribution of fine serving vessels as archaeological indicators of wealth within the context of the residential corporate group. However, examination of perishable assemblages from Chacoan centers reveals ritual objects nearly identical to those used by modern Puebloan priesthoods. Likewise, burial data reveals systems of hereditary control over religious roles and associated material privileges that are strikingly similar to those in the historic Pueblos. I argue that during the post-Chacoan period, the material foundations of Chacoan theocracy--including Chacoan ritual paraphernalia and Chacoan patterns of ritual consumption--were co-opted by leaders of peripheral communities to create continuity in a time of political rupture. It begins by sketching a theoretical framework for analyzing the meaningful and power-laden relationships between various agents (e.g.., caravan drovers, consumers, and authorities), moving objects, and landscapes in the practice of long-distance trade. Combining these propositions with ethnoarchaeological data on the llama caravan trade, it outlines a methodological approach to the problem that emphasizes the study of the internodal spaces (i.e., areas between communities where trade items are consumed) and the actual practices responsible for the interregional circulation of goods (caravan trade being the main one in this case). The second part of the paper applies these ideas to the analysis of archaeological data from the routes that traverse the western Andean range (i.e., caravan campsites, shrines, and trails). These data show changing patterns of interregional trade between the Atacama Desert and the Altiplano (Bolivia-Argentina) between AD 400 and 1535, differences that correlate with the social transformations experienced by these populations from the Middle Horizon, through the Late Intermediate Period, until their incorporation to the Inca state.
