And He sat<MG2523> down<MG2523> and <i>continued</i> teaching<MG1321> the crowds<MG3793> from the boat<MG4143>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when<MG5613> He had finished<MG3973> speaking<MG2980>, He said<MG3004> to Simon<MG4613>, “Put<MG1877> out<MG1877> into the deep<MG899> water<MG899> and let<MG5465> down<MG5465> your nets<MG1350> for a catch<MG61>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Simon<MG4613> responded<MG611> and said<MG3004>, “Master<MG1988b>, we worked<MG2872> hard<MG2872> all<MG3650> night<MG3571> and caught<MG2983> nothing<MG3762>, but <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>I will do as You say<MG4487> <i>and</i> let<MG5465> down<MG5465> the nets<MG1350>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And when they had done<MG4160> this<MG3778>, they caught<MG4788> a great<MG4183> quantity<MG4128> of fish<MG2486>, and their nets<MG1350> <i>began</i> to tear<MG1284>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>so<MG5620> they signaled<MG2656> to their partners<MG3353> in the other<MG2087> boat<MG4143> to come<MG2064> and help<MG4815> them. And they came<MG2064> and filled<MG4092a> both<MG297> of the boats<MG4143>, to<MG5620> the<MG5620> point<MG5620> that<MG5620> they were sinking<MG1036>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But when Simon<MG4613> Peter<MG4074> saw<MG3708> <i>this,</i> he fell<MG4363> down<MG4363> at Jesus’<MG2424> knees<MG1119>, saying<MG3004>, “Go<MG1831> away<MG1831> from me, Lord<MG2962>, for I am<MG1510> a sinful<MG268> man<MG435>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>For amazement<MG2285> had seized<MG4023> him and all<MG3956> his companions<MG3588, 4862> because<MG1909> of the catch<MG61> of fish<MG2486> which<MG3739> they had taken<MG4815>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>and likewise<MG3668> also<MG2532> <i>were</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>James<MG2385> and John<MG2491>, sons<MG5207> of Zebedee<MG2199>, who<MG3739> were partners<MG2844> with Simon<MG4613>. And Jesus<MG2424> said<MG3004> to Simon<MG4613>, “Do not fear<MG5399>; from now<MG3568> on you will be catching<MG2221> people<MG444>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>When they had brought<MG2609> their boats<MG4143> to land<MG1093>, they left<MG863> everything<MG3956> and followed<MG190> Him. <p class="hdg">A Man with Leprosy Healed</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>While<MG1722> He was in one<MG1520> of the cities<MG4172>, behold<MG2400>, <i>there was</i> a man<MG435> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>covered<MG4134> with leprosy<MG3014>; and when he saw<MG3708> Jesus<MG2424>, he fell<MG4098> on his face<MG4383> and begged<MG1189a> Him, saying<MG3004>, “Lord<MG2962>, if<MG1437> You are willing<MG2309>, You can<MG1410> make<MG2511> me clean<MG2511>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And He reached<MG1614> out<MG1614> with His hand<MG5495> and touched<MG681> him, saying<MG3004>, “I am<MG2309> willing<MG2309>; be cleansed<MG2511>.” And immediately<MG2112> the leprosy<MG3014> left<MG565> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And He ordered<MG3853> him to tell<MG3004> no<MG3367> one<MG3367>, <i>saying,</i> “But go<MG565> and show<MG1166> yourself<MG4572> to the priest<MG2409>, and make<MG4374> an<MG4374> offering<MG4374> for your cleansing<MG2512>, just<MG2531a> as<MG2531a> Moses<MG3475> commanded<MG4367>, as a testimony<MG3142> to them.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>But the news<MG3056> about<MG4012> Him was spreading<MG1330> <i>even</i> farther<MG3123>, and large<MG4183> crowds<MG3793> were gathering<MG4905> to hear<MG191> <i>Him</i> and to be healed<MG2323> of their sicknesses<MG769>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>But <i>Jesus</i> Himself<MG846> would <i>often</i> slip<MG5298> away<MG5298> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>wilderness<MG2048> and pray<MG4336>. <p class="hdg">A Man Lowered Through a Roof</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>One<MG1520> day<MG2250> He was teaching<MG1321>, and there were <i>some</i> Pharisees<MG5330> and teachers<MG3547> of<MG3547> the<MG3547> Law<MG3547> sitting<MG2521> <i>there</i> who<MG3739> had come<MG2064> from every<MG3956> village<MG2968> of Galilee<MG1056> and Judea<MG2449>, and <i>from</i> Jerusalem<MG2419>; and the power<MG1411> of the Lord<MG2962> was <i>present</i> for Him to perform<MG2390> healing<MG2390>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And <i>some</i> men<MG435> <i>were</i> carrying<MG5342> a man<MG444> on a stretcher<MG2825b> who<MG3739> was paralyzed<MG3886>; and they were trying<MG2212> to bring<MG1533> him in<MG1533> and to set<MG5087> him down<MG5087> in front<MG1799> of Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>But when they did not find<MG2147> any<MG4169> <i>way</i> to bring<MG1533> him in<MG1533> because<MG1223> of the crowd<MG3793>, they went<MG305> up<MG305> on the roof<MG1430> and let<MG2524> him down<MG2524> through<MG1223> the tiles<MG2766> with his stretcher<MG2826>, into the middle<MG3319> <i>of the crowd,</i> in<MG1715> front<MG1715> of Jesus<MG2424>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And seeing<MG3708> their faith<MG4102>, He said<MG3004>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Friend<MG444>, your sins<MG266> are forgiven<MG863> you.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>The scribes<MG1122> and the Pharisees<MG5330> began<MG757> thinking<MG1260> of<MG1260> the<MG1260> implications<MG1260>, saying<MG3004>, “Who<MG5101> is this<MG3778> <i>man</i> who<MG3739> speaks<MG2980> blasphemies<MG988>? Who<MG5101> can<MG1410> forgive<MG863> sins<MG266>, except<MG1487, 3361> God<MG2316> alone<MG3441>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>But Jesus<MG2424>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>aware<MG1921> of their thoughts<MG1261>, responded<MG611> and said<MG3004> to them, “Why<MG5101> are you thinking<MG1260> this<MG1260> way<MG1260> in your hearts<MG2588>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Which<MG5101> is easier<MG2123>, to say<MG3004>: ‘Your sins<MG266> are forgiven<MG863> you,’ or<MG2228> to say<MG3004>, ‘Get<MG1453> up<MG1453> and walk<MG4043>’? <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>But so<MG2443> that<MG2443> you may know<MG3609a> that the Son<MG5207> of Man<MG444> has<MG2192> authority<MG1849> on earth<MG1093> to forgive<MG863> sins<MG266>,” He said<MG3004> to the man<MG3886> who was paralyzed<MG3886>, “I say<MG3004> to you, get<MG1453> up<MG1453>, and pick<MG142> up<MG142> your stretcher<MG2826>, and go<MG4198> home<MG3624>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And immediately he got<MG450> up<MG450> before<MG1799> them, and picked<MG142> up<MG142> what<MG3739> he had been lying<MG2621> on, and went<MG565> home<MG3624> glorifying<MG1392> God<MG2316>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>they were all<MG537a> struck<MG2983> with astonishment<MG1611> and <i>began</i> glorifying<MG1392> God<MG2316>. They were also<MG2532> filled<MG4092a> with fear<MG5401>, saying<MG3004>, “We have seen<MG3708> remarkable<MG3861> things<MG3861> today<MG4594>!” <p class="hdg">Call of Levi (Matthew)</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>After<MG3326> that He went<MG1831> out<MG1831> and looked<MG2300> at<MG2300> a tax<MG5057> collector<MG5057> named<MG3686> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>Levi<MG3017> sitting<MG2521> in the tax<MG5058> office<MG5058>, and He said<MG3004> to him, “Follow<MG190> Me.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And he left<MG2641> everything<MG3956> behind<MG2641>, and got<MG450> up<MG450> and <i>began</i> following<MG190> Him. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And Levi<MG3017> gave<MG4160> a big<MG3173> reception<MG1403> for Him in his house<MG3614>; and there was a large<MG4183> crowd<MG3793> of tax<MG5057> collectors<MG5057> and other<MG243> <i>people</i> who<MG3739> were reclining<MG2621> <i>at the table</i> with them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>The Pharisees<MG5330> and their scribes<MG1122> <i>began</i> grumbling<MG1111> to His disciples<MG3101>, saying<MG3004>, “Why<MG1223, 5101> do you eat<MG2068> and drink<MG4095> with the tax<MG5057> collectors<MG5057> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>sinners<MG268>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And Jesus<MG2424> answered<MG611> and said<MG3004> to them, “<i>It is</i> not those<MG3588> who are healthy<MG5198> who need<MG5532> a physician<MG2395>, but those<MG3588> who are sick<MG2560>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>I have not come<MG2064> to call<MG2564> the righteous<MG1342> to repentance<MG3341>, but sinners<MG268>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And they said<MG3004> to Him, “The disciples<MG3101> of John<MG2491> often<MG4437> fast<MG3522> and offer<MG4160> prayers<MG1162>, the <i>disciples</i> of the Pharisees<MG5330> also<MG2532> do <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>the same<MG3668>, but Yours<MG4674> eat<MG2068> and drink<MG4095>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/5-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And Jesus<MG2424> said<MG3004> to them, “You cannot<MG1410, 3361> make<MG4160> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>attendants<MG5207> of the groom<MG3567> fast<MG3522> while<MG1722, 3739> the groom<MG3566> is with them, can you?
