BV","grobid_abstract":"Objective It has been suggested that there exists a subgroup of ADHD patients that have a high theta-beta ratio (TBR). The aim of this study was to analyze the distribution of TBR values in ADHD patients and validate the presence of a high-TBR cluster using objective metrics. Methods The TBR was extracted from eyes-open resting state EEG recordings of 363 ADHD patients, aged 5-21 years. The TBR distribution was estimated with three Bayesian Gaussian Mixture Models (BGMMs) with one, two, and three components, respectively. The pairwise comparison of BGMMs was carried out with deviance tests to identify the number of components that best represented the data. Results The two-component BGMM modeled the TBR values significantly better than the one-component BGMM (p-value = 0.005). No significant difference was observed between the two-component and three-component BGMM (p-value = 0.850). Conclusion These results suggest that there exist indeed two TBR clusters within the ADHD population. Significance This work offers a global framework to understanding values found in the literature and suggest guidelines on how to compute theta-beta ratio values. Moreover, using objective data-driven method we confirm the existence of a high theta-beta ratio cluster.","publication_date":"2019,,","publication_name":"Clinical Neurophysiology","grobid_abstract_attachment_id":"97384877"},"document_type":"paper","pre_hit_view_count_baseline":null,"quality":"high","language":"en","title":"Is there a cluster of high theta-beta ratio patients in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder?","broadcastable":false,"draft":null,"has_indexable_attachment":true,"indexable":true}}["work"]; EEG biomarkers have been under extensive use in ADHD researchs, even though they have not been clinically confirmed so far. This study attempted to examine the relationship between theta/beta ratio and the disease intensity in ADHD children as well as the sensitivity and theta/beta ratio characteristic to detect ADHD and healthy children. The accuracy of this ratio would help differentiate diseased children from the healthy ones in terms of ADHD. Materials and Methods: This study is a case-control test, in which the statistical population consisted of 59 healthy children and 61 children with ADHD who had been chosen through simple random sampling. The theta/beta ratio was previously hypothesised to be an index of arousal, but a number of studies failed to find any association between the ratio and indices of arousal, instead proposing that the theta/beta ratio may actually be indicative of cognitive processing. This hypothesis was tested by Clarke et al using a sample of healthy adults, with results indicating that the theta/beta ratio correlated with a marker of cognitive processing (P300 latency in an auditory oddball task), while P300 amplitude correlated with an arousal marker (alpha power). The aim of this study was to test whether similar results could be found in a sample of 41 adults with the combined type of ADHD. EEGs were recorded during an eyes-closed resting condition and an auditory oddball task. However, the effectiveness of this index to differentiate between different groups of disorders is still under discussion. The primary purpose was to determine to what extent active TRB can differentiate between children with ADHD and specific Learning Disorder (sLD) as the most common comorbid disorder. Methods: Two groups of school-aged children with sLD (N=15) and ADHD (N=15) were diagnosed through a process of clinical interview and observation. Electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded in both groups during active condition. The implemented cognitive task was the visual continuous performance task (VCPT). TBR in sites of CZ and Fz, and cognitive measures of VCPT were calculated in the aforementioned groups. The Bayesian approach in statistical analysis is an alternative to be considered, given that it makes it possible to introduce prior information about the phenomenon under study. The aim of the present work is to analyze binary and multinomial logistic regression simple models estimated by means of a Bayesian approach in comparison to classical estimation. To that effect, Child Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) clinical data were analyzed. The sample included 286 participants of 6–12 years (78% boys, 22% girls) with ADHD positive diagnosis in 86.7% of the cases. The results show a reduction of standard errors associated to the coefficients obtained from the Bayesian analysis, thus bringing a greater stability to the coefficients. Complex models where parameter estimation may be easily compromised could benefit from this advantage.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline (ADHD) children. This is a cross sectional study performed in Clinical Neurophysiology Unit, Cairo University, Egypt. It included 2 groups, each of 52 children (one of them with ADHD and the other were normal control). EEG was recorded for every subject during normal relaxing circumstance with eyes opened as well as during TOVA. Comparing both groups revealed statistically significant difference in the theta/beta ratio in both state (normal relaxing with eyes opened and during TOVA), also we found that the theta/beta ratio decreased in normal group (during concentration) while in the ADHD group it increased with a specific pattern. The theta/beta ratio can be of value in helping for differential diagnosis in patients presenting with mild ADHD.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Frontal theta/beta ratio changes during TOVA in Egyptian ADHD children","attachmentId":100250864,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/99064931/Frontal_theta_beta_ratio_changes_during_TOVA_in_Egyptian_ADHD_children","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Practice advisory: The utility of EEG theta/beta power ratio in ADHD diagnosis: Report of the Guideline Development, Dissemination, and Implementation Subcommittee of the American Academy of Neurology
Jay Varma

Neurology, 2016

To evaluate the evidence for EEG theta/beta power ratio for diagnosing, or helping to diagnose, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We identified relevant studies and classified them using American Academy of Neurology criteria. Two Class I studies assessing the ability of EEG theta/beta power ratio and EEG frontal beta power to identify patients with ADHD correctly identified 166 of 185 participants. Both studies evaluated theta/beta power ratio and frontal beta power in suspected ADHD or in syndromes typically included in an ADHD differential diagnosis. A bivariate model combining the diagnostic studies shows that the combination of EEG frontal beta power and theta/beta power ratio has relatively high sensitivity and specificity but is insufficiently accurate. It is unknown whether a combination of standard clinical examination and EEG theta/beta power ratio increases diagnostic certainty of ADHD compared with clinical examination alone.
