Anti-nuclear activists have rallied since the late 1970’s opposed to the construction of Plant Vogtle near Waynesboro, Georgia due to the social and environmental justice issues related to the nuclear industry. In 2010, the nuclear industry proposed a nuclear resurgence in the US, proposing to construct new reactors at Plant Vogtle. This represented the first time new nuclear reactors had been proposed since the moratorium on new reactors as a result of the partial meltdown at Three Mile Island in 1979. The aim of the study is to understand the experience of “first wave” anti-nuclear activists in Georgia (those engaged for twenty years or more). Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Framework was employed to locate anti-nuclear activists’ perceived facilitators and barriers to their activism. ds2-5-body-sm">The purpose of this essay is twofold. First, I examine interdisciplinary literature to reveal the environmental injustices associated with the front and back ends of nuclear power production in the USA – Uranium mining and high-level nuclear waste (HLW) storage. Second, I argue that the injustices associated with nuclear power are upheld, in part, through discourse. This essay examines how the term “wasteland” is invoked in relation to HLW waste storage in the USA and contributes to the discursive formation of nuclear colonialism. Examination of this discourse not only contributes to current literature on nuclear colonialism but also to environmental justice research by arguing for the importance of examining the discursive aspects of environmental injustices. Turtle Island: International Environmental Communication Association.</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">This essay examines how environmental advocates, public interest advocates, and “citizen-consumers” have challenged corporate efforts to construct new nuclear power plants in the southeastern United States. The merger of Duke Energy and Progress Energy has produced the nation’s largest electric utility, with a stronger capital base for costly nuclear construction, while the merged company seeks financing arrangements that would shift costs and risks from shareholders to electricity consumers. Opponents have challenged state-level regulatory approval of the merger and the financing plan, with mixed success. Linking insights provided by articulation theory with an argument for strategic intervention made by Cox (2010), we examine these efforts to articulate the economic and environmental risks of nuclear construction. Following the horrendous disaster and nuclear meltdown, large citizen mobilizations escalated from the spring of 2011 to the late summer of 2012. Demonstrations of 20,000 to 75,000 people were reported several times in Tokyo, with protesters chanting “Sayonara nuclear power.”1 Interestingly, these citizen challenges did not, for the most part, arise from the established environmental groups in Japan. As mass protests continued over the course of a year and much of Japanese society grew critical of the hazards of the nuclear industry, a review of news reports, photos, and lists of event endorsers revealed a striking lack of environmental organizations.2 Why were these organizations relatively silent on the largest environmental crisis in the country’s history? Nevertheless, the historiography of anti-nuclear protest remains largely limited to national stories about heroic conflict and the rise of movements. The contributions to this focus issue explore the so far under-researched transnational dimension of the conflict in a global perspective. They make visible for the first time relevant transfers of scientific knowledge and protest practices as well as transnational exchange between activists and experts from Western Europe, the United States and Australia. Rather than taking transnational interaction for granted, the authors explore the conditions facilitating and hampering the transfer of ideas. They analyse why only certain activists were committed and able to cross borders, as well as the obstacles they were facing. Within the theoretical framework of structural functionalism, it claims that structural changes happening in Georgia's political system during the last 30 years have caused this movement. The opening of an "window of possibilities" during Perestroika and Glasnost made it possible to start the discussion on the sustainability of the project, which later caused the updating of the project and then, structural changes in 2003, and the strengthening of the civil society made it possible to resume this social movement. This paper aims to analyze the various actors, which are involved in the discussions as opponents or proponents of the Khudoni HPP construction and their arguments are the same despite of the period of 30 years; government and investors are the main proponents of the construction while the academia and civil society are opposing it through various types of strategies. Tompkins</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">European Review of History/Revue européenne d'histoire, 2021</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">During the 1970s, industrialized society seemed to be on the cusp of sweeping change, moving away from the Fordist 'modern' era and into an undefined 'post-modern' future. To contemporaries in France and West Germany, arguably nothing symbolized this uncertainty more clearly than nuclear energy. This article examines, from the perspectives of three sets of actors, perceptions of the present and visions of the future connected with anti-nuclear protest. Anti-nuclear activists critically re-evaluated narratives of 'progress', deploying both backward-looking and forward-looking references to emphasize the importance of action against nuclear technology in the present moment. Movement-aligned counter-experts from the natural sciences came to question their own professional commitment to scientific progress as they argued that risky technologies were being rushed to commercial use for prestige and profit. Finally, social scientists sympathetic to protesters situated the anti-nuclear movement in relation to a 'new' era or a new phase of modernity: not nuclear technology, but opposition to it seemed to reveal where society was headed.
