The smelt was of 7.5kg of moderately rich bog iron ore, in a low shaft furnace, resulting in a low carbon bloom of 1600g. Half the bloom was refined to a billet (642g), then to a flat bar (350g), part of which was forged to a knife. If the whole bloom had been refined, the total losses would have been more than half the original weight, resulting in three smithing hearth slags from each stage of the process. The data is used to make a preliminary calculation of the production from the sites at Bryn y Castell and Crawcwellt, where considerable numbers of smithing hearth bottoms were found.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Peter This paper demonstrates how an experimental smelt can be a proxy for testing and evaluating methods used to detect, record and excavate a bloomery furnace and smithing hearth. In this investigation, a series of smelting and smithing experiments were recorded and compared to the results obtained from an archaeological analysis into their heavily disturbed remains (topographical survey, geophysical prospection, magnetic survey collection and excavation). Non-invasive techniques confirmed the presence of pyrotechnology. Invasive methods, however, highlighted the importance of examining micro-residues in providing a greater insight into the metallurgical activities that had taken place. The methods used and the results of the experiment are assessed in comparison to known archaeological examples from a Roman iron smelting complex in Hüttenberg (Austria) to demonstrate how a proxy can be effective in better understanding archaeological remains. Some of the broader issues relating to fieldwork methods and guidelines are also discussed.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Finding the invisible smelt: using experimental archaeology to critically evaluate fieldwork methods applied to bloomery iron production remains.","attachmentId":35897622,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/3426176/Finding_the_invisible_smelt_using_experimental_archaeology_to_critically_evaluate_fieldwork_methods_applied_to_bloomery_iron_production_remains","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/3426176/Finding_the_invisible_smelt_using_experimental_archaeology_to_critically_evaluate_fieldwork_methods_applied_to_bloomery_iron_production_remains"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="4" data-entity-id="91196697" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/91196697/An_archaeometallurgical_study_of_early_medieval_iron_technology_an_examination_of_the_quality_and_use_of_iron_alloys_in_iron_artefacts_from_early_medieval_Britain">An archaeometallurgical study of early medieval iron technology : an examination of the quality and use of iron alloys in iron artefacts from early medieval Britain</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="4868155" href="https://independent.academia.edu/gerryMcDonnell">Gerry McDonnell</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">2010</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">This project presents a study of iron technology in Early Medieval (fifth to eleventh centuries AD) Britain through the examination of iron found in settlement contexts. This is a period characterized by significant cultural, political and social changes. The effect of these changes on iron technology has never been investigated on a large scale. Previous studies on iron focused either on individual sites or on single artefact types, and did not provide any clear multi-region interpretive framework. A longstanding problem has been in identifying the extent of usage of a key alloy: phosphoric iron. This research project examined iron assemblages from eight settlement sites of varying size, culture, economic and social status from across Britain. From each settlement a mixed assemblage of iron artefacts was sampled, including edged tools, items of</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"An archaeometallurgical study of early medieval iron technology : an examination of the quality and use of iron alloys in iron artefacts from early medieval Britain","attachmentId":94552447,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/91196697/An_archaeometallurgical_study_of_early_medieval_iron_technology_an_examination_of_the_quality_and_use_of_iron_alloys_in_iron_artefacts_from_early_medieval_Britain","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/91196697/An_archaeometallurgical_study_of_early_medieval_iron_technology_an_examination_of_the_quality_and_use_of_iron_alloys_in_iron_artefacts_from_early_medieval_Britain"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="5" data-entity-id="26185365" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/26185365/Stetkiewicz_S_2016_Iron_Age_Iron_Production_in_Britain_and_the_Near_Continent_in_G_Erskine_P_Jacobsson_P_Miller_S_Stetkiewicz_eds_Proceedings_of_the_17th_Iron_Age_Research_Student_Symposium_Oxford_Archaeopress">Stetkiewicz, S. 2016. However, this kind of data cannot tell us much about iron production technology and how iron artefacts were made. Unfortunately, not many documents about iron making and iron working have survived to our times. Moreover, smelting furnaces, smithing hearths and structures associated with them were frequently insubstantial, so usually the only indicators of Roman and Medieval iron production are difficult to recognise residues of them like: various types of slags, blooms, gromps, hammer-scale, furnace and hearth lining, and fragments of fired clay walls. In many cases, a chemical and microscopic analysis of materials, related to the iron metallurgy, allows us to ‘read’ more precisely the past from archaeological findings. Their results combined with experimental archaeology experience provide data which can be used to answer important questions in early medieval archaeometallurgy. By replicating ancient iron smelting and working processes the interpretations of how artefacts were made can be confirmed and speculations about the knowledge and skills of people who made and worked iron can be done.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Masters of fire ancient smelters and blacksmiths. class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Excavations in 2002 at Cwmystwyth, in Central Wales, found an ancient lead smelting site. There are remains of the medieval and the Roman periods. This paper describes in brief the excavation of the medieval lead bole but also provides an archaeological reconstruction of this and details of an experimental lead smelt carried out at the site in 2003 (by ST). The analytical study (by LA) is of the medieval metallurgical debris excavated in 2002, mostly slag, but also ore and lead. The aim was to understand the raw material, the metal produced and the smelting process. The ore smelted was predominantly galena but with no detectable silver, showing it was probably exploited to produce lead. The extremely high sulphur content of the slag indicates that the ore was not roasted before smelting. It is argued that the medieval activity was small-scale, smelting a very rich ore. The furnaces apparently did not require much capital investment, enabling a short-lived and/or exploratory smelting operation.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"An early medieval lead-smelting bole from Banc Tynddol, Cwmystwyth, Ceredigion (Anguilano et al 2010, HistMet 44)","attachmentId":31299937,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/2470418/An_early_medieval_lead_smelting_bole_from_Banc_Tynddol_Cwmystwyth_Ceredigion_Anguilano_et_al_2010_HistMet_44_","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/2470418/An_early_medieval_lead_smelting_bole_from_Banc_Tynddol_Cwmystwyth_Ceredigion_Anguilano_et_al_2010_HistMet_44_"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":31583321,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":31583321,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_31583321" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
