In the ancient Near Eastern context, offering a defective animal would be seen as disrespectful and unworthy of a deity. This principle is echoed in Leviticus 22:20-25, where offerings must be without defect to be acceptable. The requirement for unblemished sacrifices foreshadows the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who is described as the "Lamb without blemish or defect" in 1 Peter 1:19, highlighting His sinlessness and perfection.
for that is detestable to the LORD your God
The term "detestable" indicates something that is abhorrent or repugnant to God. This concept is reinforced in Malachi 1:8, where God rebukes the Israelites for offering blind and lame animals, showing that such actions are offensive to Him.
