A number of factors are associated with this collapse: climate fluctuations, economic transitions and the Arab invasions of the eighth and ninth centuries. The Sinop rural hinterland saw significant infrastructural investment during the fifth and sixth centuries in connection with a monocrop economy based on olive production. This essay will also consider the widespread tendency to lump together evidence in a broad synthesis that can introduce serious misunderstandings about the microhistories that, taken together, comprise the larger whole (Cassis et al. 2018). Local patterns are diverse and depend on local factors rather than fitting closely into a broad general model that might be suggested by a more summary approach to the data. A diverse pattern of organizing land and labour appears to have created a more resilient landscape in the face of Empire-wide military and economic Some of the expansion appears to be connected to the intensification of agricultural industry and the improvement of communication infrastructure. While individual histories vary, the archaeological record shows a major demographic decline between ca .650 and ca. 900 CE in central and southwestern Anatolia, which was then a frontier zone between Byzantine and Arab armies. In these regions, and also in northwest Anatolia, century-scale trends in pollen indicate a substantial decline in the production of cereal and tree crops, and a smaller decline in pastoral activity. During the subsequent recovery (α) phase after 900 CE there was strong regional differentiation, with central Anatolia moving to a new economic system based on agro-pastoralism, while lowland areas of northern and western Anatolia returned to the cultivation of commercial crops such as olive trees. However, only very slowly did the historians of late antiquity become aware of this phenomenon and comprehensive studies of its agricultural and socio-economic aspects started to appear as recently as the last few years. One of the key factors which must have facilitated the unparalleled development of agriculture underlying the prosperity of the late antique countryside were climatic fluctuations. Thanks to the growing body of scientific evidence, in particular palynological and limnological research, it is now possible to claim with relative certainty that late antiquity was a period of unusual humidity in the climatic history of the Mediterranean, and it was followed by a particularly dry centuries of the early Middle Ages. This study evaluates the degree to which these changes influenced agricultural developments by discussing three regional case studies: south-western Asia Minor (Lycia, Caria and Pisidia), the plains of south-central Anatolia, and Palestine. In almost every case, the more favourable late antique hydrological conditions made significantly easier, if not encouraged, the expansion of cultivation into environmentally marginal lands, while this boom in agricultural production must have created incentives for the development of rural economy in areas with more stable natural conditions. Besides evaluating the forms of evidence, it also underlines some contributions of the recent interdisciplinary researches conducted within the discipline of classical archaeology in Turkey to our general knowledge of ancient Anatolian agriculture. The results of this study also show that significant changes occurred in agricultural life with the Romanization process in order to create the province of Asia. Thanks to the separate analysis of data for coastal and inland regions, it shows that we do not see any substantial differences in the functioning of the rural economy between these two geographical zones. Therefore, the new demand from Constantinople for agricultural produce or a local economy’s proximity to a long-distance exchange network, cannot explain fully the observed phenomena. This paper will take the case of Byzantine Anatolia between the 6th and 8th c., together with the case of the small provincial city of Euchaïta in the Pontus, and examine some of the evidence for such causal links.
