The study is based on paleoenvironmental (§ 2.1) and archaeological surveys (§ 2.2) conducted in the Bor plain, as well as archaeobotanical (§ 3.1) and zooarchaeological (§ 3.2) analyses from the site of Kınık Höyük. The available evidence indicates the development during the 1 st millennium BCE of a rich agricultural landscape, dominated by the cultivation of water-demanding crops. The purpose of selecting two different sites is to determine the role of the physical differences of their environments on shaping the regulation of agricultural activities. This thesis attempts to correlate all lines of available environmental and subsistence data from excavations and surveys with the present day land use analysis and ethnographic researches. It is hoped that through a comparison of available data from these two sites that a better understanding of ancient agricultural systems can be determined. Radiometric measurements indicate that the advent of food production in Western Anatolia was delayed by up to 2,000 calibrated years – potentially making it the longest standstill in Neolithic history. While ongoing excavations in the Konya Plain and Cappadocia have traced back the origins of sedentary farming in Central Anatolia to the second half of the 9 th millennium BC cal., not a single farming site in Western Anatolia has produced consistent evidence for pre-c. 7,000 BC cal. occupation, despite intensive research strategies over the last 20 years targeting early human occupation. Although admitting that the issue under consideration is heavily dependent on the state of research, and that future discoveries may alter the current chronological imbalance, the recent completion or near-completion of several major archaeological digs in Western Anatolia provide, in our opinion, an excellent opportunity for a roundup and the production of the first comprehensive synthesis on this subject.
