But Jesus, having stooped down, was writing with His finger on the ground. <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And, as they continued asking Him, He, having raised Himself up, said to them, <FR>"Let the sinless one among you first cast a stone at her."<Fr> <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And, again stooping down, He was writing with His finger on the ground. <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And they, having heard <i>it</i>, were going out, one by one, from the eldest to the last; and Jesus was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the midst. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And Jesus, having lifted Himself up, said to her, <FR>"Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?"<Fr> <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said to her, <FR>"Neither do I condemn you; go your way; henceforth sin no more."<Fr>]<p> <A name="13"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus the Light of the World<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../1_john/1.htm#5">1 John 1:5–10</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Again, therefore, Jesus spake to them, saying, <FR>"I am the Light of the world: he that follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the Light of life."<Fr> <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>The Pharisees, therefore, said to Him, "Thou testifiest concerning Thyself; Thy testimony is not true." <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Jesus answered and said to them, <FR>"Even if I do testify concerning Myself, My testimony is true; because I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye know not whence I came, or whither I go.<Fr> <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span><FR>Ye judge according to the flesh; I judge no man.<Fr> <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span><FR>But, even if I judge, My judgment is true; because I am not alone, but I and the Father Who sent Me.<Fr> <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span><FR>And in your law also it has been written, 'The testimony of two men is true.'<Fr> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span><FR>I am <i>One</i> Who testify concerning Myself; and the Father, Who sent Me, testifieth concerning Me."<Fr> <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>They said, therefore, to Him, "Where is Thy Father?" Jesus answered, <FR>"Ye know neither Me, nor My Father. If ye knew Me, ye would know My Father also."<Fr> <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>These words He spake in the treasury, while teaching in the temple; and no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.<p> <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>He said, therefore, again to them, <FR>"I go away, and ye will seek Me, and will die in your sins. Whither I go, ye cannot come."<Fr> <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>The Jews, therefore, said, "Will He kill Himself?" because He said, <FR>"Whither I go, ye cannot come."<Fr> <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And He said to them, <FR>"Ye are from beneath; I am from above. Ye are of this world; I am not of this world.<Fr> <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span><FR>I said, therefore, to you, that ye will die in your sins; for, unless ye believe that I am <i>He</i>, ye will die in your sins."<Fr> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>They said, therefore, to Him, "Who art Thou?" Jesus said to them, <FR>"Even that which I am saying to you from the beginning.<Fr> <A name="27"></a><span class="red"><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><FR>I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you. But He Who sent Me is true; and the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world."<Fr> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>They perceived not that He was speaking to them of the Father. <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Jesus, therefore, said, <FR>"When ye lift up the Son of Man, then will ye know that I am <i>He</i>; and, of Myself, I do nothing, but, as the Father taught Me, I speak these things.<Fr> <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span><FR>And He Who sent Me is with Me. He hath not left Me alone; because I am always doing the things that please Him."<Fr> <A name="31"></a><p class="hdg">The Truth Will Set You Free<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../2_john/1.htm#4">2 John 1:4–6</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>As He spake these things, many believed on Him.<p> <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Jesus, therefore, said to those Jews who had believed on Him, <FR>"If ye abide in My word, ye are truly My disciples;<Fr> <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span><FR>and ye will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."<Fr> <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>They answered Him, "We are Abraham's seed, and to no one have we at any time been in bondage; how sayest Thou, <FR>'Ye shall be made free?'<Fr><p> <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Jesus answered them, <FR>"Verily, verily, I say to you, every one who commits sin is a slave of sin.<Fr> <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span><FR>And the slave abides not in the house forever; the son abides forever.<Fr> <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span><FR>If, therefore, the Son shall make you free, ye will be free indeed.<Fr> <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span><FR>I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye are seeking to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.<Fr> <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span><FR>I speak the things which I have seen with My Father; and ye, therefore, do the things which ye heard from <i>your</i> father.<Fr><p> <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>They answered and said to Him, "Our father is Abraham." Jesus saith to them, <FR>"If ye are children of Abraham, ye are doing the works of Abraham.<Fr> <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span><FR>But now ye are seeking to kill Me, a Man Who hath told you the truth, which I heard from My Father: this Abraham did not.<Fr> <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span><FR>Ye do the works of your father."<Fr> They say to Him, "We were not born of fornication; we have one Father?God."<p> <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>Jesus said to them, <FR>"If God were your Father, ye would love Me; for I came forth, and have come from, God; for neither have I come of Myself, but He sent Me.<Fr> <A name="44"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span><FR>Why do ye not understand My speech? <i>it is</i> because ye cannot hear My word.<Fr> <A name="45"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span><FR>Ye are of <i>your</i> father the Devil; and the desires of your father ye wish to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own; because he is a liar, and the father of it.<Fr> <A name="46"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span><FR>And, because I speak the truth, ye believe Me not.<Fr> <A name="47"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span><FR>Who of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do ye not believe Me?<Fr> <A name="48"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span><FR>He that is of God hears the words of God; on this account, ye hear them not, because ye are not of God."<Fr><p> <A name="49"></a><p class="hdg">Before Abraham Was Born, I Am<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>The Jews answered and said to Him, "Say we not well that Thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?" <A name="50"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>Jesus answered, <FR>"I have not a demon; but I honor My Father, and ye dishonor Me.<Fr> <A name="51"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span><FR>But I seek not My own glory: there is One Who seeketh and judgeth.<Fr> <A name="52"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span><FR>Verily, verily, I say to you, if any one keeps My word, he shall never see death."<Fr> <A name="53"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-52.htm"><b>52</b></a></span>The Jews said to Him, "Now we know that Thou hast a demon! Abraham and the prophets died; and Thou sayest, <FR>'If any one keeps My word, he shall never taste of death!'<Fr> <A name="54"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-53.htm"><b>53</b></a></span>Art Thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died? Whom makest Thou Thyself?" <A name="55"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-54.htm"><b>54</b></a></span>Jesus answered, <FR>"If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing. It is My Father Who glorifieth Me, of Whom ye say, that He is your God.<Fr> <A name="56"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/8-55.htm"><b>55</b></a></span><FR>And ye have not known Him, but I know Him; and, if I should say, I know Him not, I shall be a liar like you.
