The "reason" is the rejection of truth and love for wickedness by those who are perishing. This sets the stage for divine judgment, a theme consistent throughout Scripture, where God allows people to follow their chosen paths when they reject Him (Romans 1:24-28).
God will send them
This indicates God's sovereign control over the events of history. While God is not the author of evil, He permits certain actions to fulfill His purposes. This aligns with instances in the Old Testament where God allows or sends certain conditions as judgment, such as the hardening of Pharaoh's heart (Exodus 9:12).
a powerful delusion
The delusion is described as "powerful," indicating its effectiveness in leading people away from the truth. This can be seen as a form of divine judgment, where God allows those who reject the truth to be further entrenched in their deception. This concept is echoed in Isaiah 66:4, where God chooses delusions for those who do not listen to Him.
so that they believe the lie
The "lie" is often interpreted as the false teachings and deceptions propagated by the man of lawlessness. This is reminiscent of the deception in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:4-5), where the serpent's lie led to the fall of humanity. In a broader sense, it reflects the ultimate rejection of Christ, who is the Truth (John 14:6), and the acceptance of falsehood. This serves as a warning to remain vigilant and grounded in biblical truth.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Paul the Apostle
The author of the letter, addressing the Thessalonian church to correct misunderstandings about the Day of the Lord.

2. Thessalonian Church
The recipients of the letter, a Christian community in Thessalonica facing persecution and confusion about end times.

3. God
The sovereign being who allows a delusion to come upon those who reject the truth.

4. The Man of Lawlessness
A figure mentioned earlier in the chapter, associated with deception and opposition to God.

5. The Lie
The falsehood that those under delusion will believe, contrasting with the truth of the Gospel.
Teaching Points
The Sovereignty of God in Judgment
God’s allowance of delusion is a form of judgment on those who reject the truth. Every wilful sin does this double mischief: it strengthens the power of the temptation without; it weakens the power to resist within. For an illustration, see <a href="/2_chronicles/18-7.htm" title="And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, by whom we may inquire of the LORD: but I hate him; for he never prophesied good to me, but always evil: the same is Micaiah the son of Imla. "A strong delusion" should be "an effectual inward working of error"--no longer a mere indifference to truth, but a real influence of error upon their hearts. This inward work of error is sent "with a view to their believing the lie" (the Greek has the definite article)--the lie (that is) which Antichrist would have them believe. A terrible combination when God and Satan are agreed to deceive a man!
