It conveys a sense of urgency and deep sincerity, reflecting the supplicant's recognition of their own need and dependence on the one being entreated.

Old Testament Usage

In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word often translated as "entreat" is "חָלָה" (chalah), which can mean to beseech or implore. One notable instance is found in Exodus 8:8, where Pharaoh entreats Moses and Aaron to pray to the LORD to remove the plague of frogs: "Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, 'Plead with the LORD to remove the frogs from me and my people. Then I will let the people go to sacrifice to the LORD.'" .

Another example is in Genesis 25:21, where Isaac entreats the LORD on behalf of his wife Rebekah, who is barren: "Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was childless. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived." . Here, the act of entreating is associated with prayer and supplication, demonstrating faith and reliance on God's power to intervene in human circumstances.

New Testament Usage

In the New Testament, the Greek word "παρακαλέω" (parakaleo) is often used, which can mean to call upon, exhort, or entreat. In Acts 16:9, Paul receives a vision of a man from Macedonia entreating him to come and help: "During the night, Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and pleading with him, 'Come over to Macedonia and help us.'" . This entreaty leads to the spread of the Gospel into Europe, highlighting the importance of responding to genuine pleas for spiritual aid.

In 1 Timothy 5:1, Paul instructs Timothy on how to entreat others within the church: "Do not rebuke an older man, but appeal to him as to a father. Treat younger men as brothers." . Here, entreating is associated with respect and humility, emphasizing the importance of approaching others with a spirit of gentleness and honor.

Theological Significance

Entreaty in the biblical context often involves a recognition of one's own limitations and a turning towards God or others for assistance. It is an expression of humility and faith, acknowledging that human strength and wisdom are insufficient without divine intervention or communal support. The act of entreating is deeply relational, whether it is directed towards God in prayer or towards others in the community of faith.

The Bible presents entreaty as a powerful tool for believers, encouraging them to approach God with confidence and sincerity. Hebrews 4:16 invites believers to "approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." . This verse encapsulates the essence of entreaty, highlighting the believer's access to God's grace and mercy through earnest and humble petition.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
1. In 1611 the spelling was indifferently "intreat" or "entreat." In editions of the King James Version since 1760 "intreat" is used in the sense of "to beg"; "entreat" in the sense of "deal with." As examples of "intreat" see Exodus 8:8, "Intreat the Lord" (tsa`aq); Ruth 1:16, "Intreat me not to leave thee" (pagha`); 2 Corinthians 8:4, "praying us with much entreaty" paraklesis).
