And when He was now not far from the house, the centurion sent <i>some of his</i> friends to Him, saying Lord, trouble not thyself, for I am not worthy that thou shouldst enter under my roof: <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>neither did I think myself worthy to come unto thee. But speak the word, and my servant will be recovered. <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>For I also am a man placed under <i>the</i> authority <i>of others,</i> and have soldiers under me; and I say to one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doth <i>it.</i> <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And when Jesus heard these <i>things,</i> He marvelled, and turning <i>about,</i> said to the multitude that followed Him, <FR>I declare unto you, I have not found so great faith, no not in Israel.<Fr> <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And when they that were sent, returned to the house, they found the servant well, that had been sick.<p> <A name="12"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Raises a Widow&#8217;s Son<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And the day after He went to a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with Him, and a great multitude <i>besides:</i> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>and as He came near to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carrying out <i>to be buried,</i> his mother's only son, and she <i>was</i> a widow: and many <i>of the</i> people of the city were with her. <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And when the Lord saw her, He was moved with compassion for her, and said to her, <FR>Do not weep.<Fr> <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And He came up and touched the bier, (and the bearers stopped,) and He said, <FR>Young man, I say unto thee, arise.<Fr> <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And the dead <i>person</i> sat up, and began to speak: and He delivered him to his mother. <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And an awe seized <i>them</i> all, and they glorified God, saying, a great prophet is risen up among us, and God hath visited his people. <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And this report of Him was spread through all Judea, and in all the country <i>round</i> about.<p> <A name="19"></a><p class="hdg">John&#8217;s Inquiry<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/11.htm">Matthew 11:1&#8211;6</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And the disciples of John told him of all these things: so John called two of his disciples to <i>him,</i> <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>and sent <i>them</i> to Jesus, saying, Art thou He that <i>was</i> to come, or are we to expect another? <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And the men came to Him, and said, John the baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou He that <i>was</i> to come, or are we to expect another? <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>(Now at that very time He cured many of their diseases and plagues, and of evil spirits, and gave sight to many <i>that were</i> blind.) <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And Jesus answering said unto them, <FR>Go and tell John what ye have seen and heard: that the blind recover sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached <Fr><i>to them,</i> <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span><FR>and happy is he who shall not be offended <Fr><i>at any thing</i><FR> in me.<Fr><p> <A name="25"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Testifies about John<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/11.htm#7">Matthew 11:7&#8211;19</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>When the messengers of John were departed, He began to speak unto the people concerning John, <FR>what went ye out into the wilderness to see?<Fr> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span><FR>a reed shaken by the wind? but what did ye go out to see? a man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that are <Fr><i>dressed</i><FR> in fine clothes and live delicately, are in palaces, <Fr><i>not in deserts:</i><FR> but what went ye out to see?<Fr> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><FR>a prophet? yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.<Fr><p> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span><FR>This is <Fr><i>he</i><FR> of whom it is written, "Behold I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee:"<Fr><p> <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span><FR>for I tell you <Fr><i>that</i><FR> among the sons of men there is not a greater prophet than John the baptist: (though the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he:)<Fr> <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>---and all the people that heard <i>him,</i> even the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John; <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>but the pharisees <i>indeed</i> and the lawyers rejected the counsel of God within themselves, and were not baptized by him.---<p> <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span><FR>Whereunto therefore shall I compare the men of this generation?<Fr> <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span><FR>and to what are they like? they are like children sitting in <Fr><i>the</i><FR> market-place, and calling to one another, and saying, "We have played <Fr><i>pleasant</i><FR> tunes to you, and ye have not danced; we have sung mournful ones and ye have not wept:"<Fr> <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span><FR>for John the baptist came neither eating bread, nor drinking wine, and ye say, he hath a demon:<Fr> <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span><FR>the Son of man is come eating and drinking <Fr><i>like other men,</i><FR> and ye call Him a gluttonous man and a wine bibber, <Fr><i>and</i><FR> a friend of publicans and sinners.<Fr> <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span><FR>But wisdom is justified by all her children.<Fr><p> <A name="37"></a><p class="hdg">A Sinful Woman Anoints Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/26.htm#6">Matthew 26:6&#8211;13</a>; <a href ="../mark/14.htm#3">Mark 14:3&#8211;9</a>; <a href ="../john/12.htm">John 12:1&#8211;8</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And one of the pharisees asked Him to eat with him: and He went into the pharisee's house, and sat down. <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And behold a woman in the city, that was a sinner, when she knew that He was at table in the pharisee's house, <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>brought an alabaster-<i>box</i> of ointment, and stood at his feet behind Him, weeping, and washed his feet with tears, and wiped <i>them</i> with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed <i>them</i> with the ointment. <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>But when the pharisee that invited Him saw <i>it,</i> he said within himself, This <i>man,</i> if he were a prophet, would have known who and what sort of a woman <i>this is</i> that toucheth Him; for she is a <i>notorious</i> sinner.<p> <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And Jesus said unto him, <FR>Simon, I have something to say to thee:<Fr> (and he replied, Master, say <i>on.</i>) <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span><FR>A certain creditor had two debtors, the one owed <Fr><i>him</i><FR> five hundred denaries, and the other fifty:<Fr> <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span><FR>and they not being able to pay <Fr><i>him,</i><FR> he freely forgave them both: tell <Fr><i>me</i><FR> therefore, which of them will love him most?<Fr> <A name="44"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>And Simon answered, I suppose <i>he</i> to whom he forgave most. And <i>Jesus</i> said unto him, <FR>Thou hast rightly judged:<Fr> <A name="45"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>and turning to the woman, He said to Simon, <FR>Dost thou see this woman?
