New currents also appeared in Shintō, which, often mixed with Confucianism and <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Buddhism" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Buddhism</a>, served as the <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="ideology" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ideology" data-type="MW">ideology</a> of popular education. The Confucian scholar <span id="ref319556"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Yamazaki-Ansai" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Yamazaki Ansai</a>, who had urged <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/samurai" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">samurai</a> to <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="cultivate" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cultivate" data-type="MW">cultivate</a> themselves thoroughly so as to better lead the people, also formulated a Shintō ideology with a distinctly Confucian bent, called the <span id="ref319557"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Suika-Shinto" class="md-crosslink ">Suika</a> form of Shintō. Anzai was only somewhat <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="atypical" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/atypical" data-type="MW">atypical</a> of Edo thinkers: born in <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Kyoto-prefecture-Japan" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Kyōto</a>, he became a <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Zen" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Zen</a> monk but later returned to lay life and embraced Confucianism. After years of teaching Confucianism, he studied several forms of Shintō—notably Watarai and Yoshida—before formulating his own syncretic Shintō ideals. In the later <a href="https://www.britannica.com/event/Tokugawa-period" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Tokugawa period</a> popular interest in Shintō grew progressively stronger, centered especially on faith in the shrine at <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Ise-Japan" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Ise</a>, which became the focus of mass pilgrimages. This popularity was spurred by public lectures that explained Shintō in terms easily understood by the common people; furthermore, Watarai Nobuyoshi, Anzai, and others decoupled Shintō from its previous amalgamation with <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="medieval" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/medieval" data-type="MW">medieval</a> Buddhism, explaining it from a Confucian perspective. <span id="ref319558"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Ishida-Baigan" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Ishida Baigan</a> developed a religious tradition called <span id="ref319559"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Shingaku" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Shingaku</a> (“Heart Learning”), which <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="articulated" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/articulated" data-type="MW">articulated</a> a “way” for townsmen and farmers. An amalgamation of ideas from the three teachings of Confucianism, Shintō, and Buddhism, Shingaku held forth a code of self-cultivation that valued performance of one’s tasks; in so stressing a prudent and <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="disciplined" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/disciplined" data-type="MW">disciplined</a> lifestyle grounded in the value of work, Ishida’s ideas have sometimes been regarded as a Japanese version of the “Protestant ethic.”</p><span class="marker MOD1 mod-inline"></span> <span class="marker PREMOD2 mod-inline"></span><p class="topic-paragraph"><em><span id="ref319560"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Kokugaku" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Kokugaku</a></em> (“national learning”) also arose from a similar social background. <span id="ref319561"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Kamo-Mabuchi" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Kamo Mabuchi</a> focused on a study of Japan’s most ancient poetry anthology, the <em>Man’yōshū</em>, and other ancient writings, urging a return to ancient ways before Japan had been “defiled” by foreign ideas, such as Confucianism and Buddhism. By studying the ancient language of Japan’s oldest classic, the <em>Kojiki</em> (“Records of Ancient Matters”), Mabuchi’s pupil <span id="ref319562"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Motoori-Norinaga" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Motoori Norinaga</a> tried to explicate Japan’s ancient system of <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="morality" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/morality" data-type="MW">morality</a>, called <em>kannagara no michi</em> (“way of the gods”). Another important figure in the <em>kokugaku</em> stream was <span id="ref319563"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Hirata-Atsutane" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Hirata Atsutane</a>. Expel the Barbarians!”) movement of the last years of the Tokugawa period.</p><span class="marker MOD2 mod-inline"></span> </section> <section data-level="5" id="ref23177"> <h2 class="h5"><span id="ref319565"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Westernization" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Western studies</a></h2> <span class="marker PREMOD3 mod-inline"></span><p class="topic-paragraph">The study of modern European science, termed <em>yōgaku</em> (“Western learning”) or <em><span id="ref319566"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/rangaku" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">rangaku</a></em> (“Dutch learning”), also attracted the attention of curious scholars, especially as the regime began to lose its <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="efficacy" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/efficacy" data-type="MW">efficacy</a>. A great stimulus to the concrete development of Western studies was provided by the publication, in 1774, of the <em><span id="ref319567"></span>Kaitai shinsho</em> (“New Book of Anatomy”), a translation by Sugita Gempaku and others of an anatomical book imported from the Netherlands. Thereafter, Western studies became increasingly <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="dynamic" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/dynamic" data-type="MW">dynamic</a>, focusing primarily on medicine. But as the systemic crisis grew more severe, many scholars of Western studies began to criticize the seclusion policy, arousing the ire of the <em>bakufu</em>. For example, several <em>rangaku</em> scholars criticized the <em>bakufu</em> plan to attack an American merchant ship. The resulting persecution of <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Watanabe-Kazan" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Watanabe Kazan</a>, Takano Choei, and other scholars by <em>bakufu</em> officials in the so-called <em><span id="ref319568"></span>bansha no goku</em> incident dealt a serious blow to Western studies in Japan. Thereafter, as <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="consciousness" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/consciousness" data-type="MW">consciousness</a> of the foreign threat grew stronger, adherents of Western studies placed heavy emphasis on the study of <a href="https://www.britannica.com/technology/military-technology" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">military technology</a>.</p><span class="marker MOD3 mod-inline"></span> <span class="marker PREMOD4 mod-inline"></span><p class="topic-paragraph">Other philosophers also appeared who <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="repudiated" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/repudiated" data-type="MW">repudiated</a> feudal society. <span id="ref319569"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Ando-Shoeki" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Andō Shōeki</a> rejected the stratified society established by rulers as no more than a fabrication, preaching in its place a “natural society” in which all were equal. In his <em><span id="ref319570"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Shizen-shinei-do" class="md-crosslink ">Shizen shin’eidō</a></em> (c. 1753), Shōeki portrayed an ideal society in which all people equally engaged in farming, without social distinctions or exploitation. While Shōeki may be considered exceptional in the degree of his <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="criticism" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/criticism" data-type="MW">criticism</a> of the society, others developed critical antifeudal worldviews that were directly or indirectly influenced by <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="empirical" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/empirical" data-type="MW">empirical</a> science and Western studies. <span id="ref319571"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/money/Miura-Baien" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Miura Baien</a> of <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Kyushu-island-Japan" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Kyushu</a> called his learning <em><span id="ref319572"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Rational-Studies" class="md-crosslink ">jōrigaku</a></em> (“rational studies”); it contained a dialectical method of thought that, rejecting the fixed “way” of orthodox Neo-Confucianism, saw the world as being constantly in flux. The naturalist <span id="ref319573"></span>Hiraga Gennai, from the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Takamatsu" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Takamatsu</a> domain in <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Shikoku-island-Japan" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Shikoku</a>, rejected the restricted life of the warrior; he became a <em>rōnin</em> and moved to Edo, where he thought and acted freely. As an advocate of the idea that Japan prevent the outflow of gold and silver by promoting domestic production and exchanging these products for foreign goods, Hiraga agreed substantially with <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Tanuma-Okitsugu" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Tanuma Okitsugu’s</a> desire to promote the production of various goods. Hiraga was employed by Tanuma and sent to <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Nagasaki-prefecture-Japan" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Nagasaki</a>. While experimenting with such things as dynamos and thermometers, Gennai gave full play to his genius by <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="cultivating" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cultivating" data-type="MW">cultivating</a> sugarcane and carrots, producing Dutch-style <a href="https://www.britannica.com/art/pottery" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">pottery</a>, and surveying and developing mines in various provinces of the country. He also produced a number of significant works as a dramatist.</p><span class="marker MOD4 mod-inline"></span> <span class="marker PREMOD5 mod-inline"></span><p class="topic-paragraph">Two other noteworthy scholars of the late 18th and early 19th century were <span id="ref319574"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Shiba-Kokan" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Shiba Kōkan</a> and <span id="ref319575"></span>Yamagata Bantō. An artist who began within the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/art/Kano-school" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Kanō school</a> tradition and then studied <a href="https://www.britannica.com/art/ukiyo-e" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">ukiyo-e</a> with Harunobu, Kōkan was widely influenced by Dutch studies and Western rationalism in general. He is known as the pioneer of etching in Japan; but in his writings, Kōkan also criticized the Tokugawa status system on the ground that the emperor and the beggar were similar human beings, thus insisting on human equality. Bantō was chief manager for a wealthy <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Osaka-prefecture-Japan" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Ōsaka</a> merchant and a noted student of the Kaitokudō, discussed above. At the outset of the period only a handful of upper-class farmers, such as the <em>shōya</em> or <em>nanushi</em>, or urban merchants were literate; by the end of this period, with the exception of the very lowest class, farmers were all at least partly literate. This spread of literacy was to some extent <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="facilitated" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/facilitated" data-type="MW">facilitated</a> by the <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="diffusion" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/diffusion" data-type="MW">diffusion</a> of temple schools (<em><span id="ref319577"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/terakoya" class="md-crosslink ">terakoya</a></em>), the educational organs of the common people. In any case, there was a marked growth in popular knowledge over the two and half centuries of Tokugawa rule. As an example, “village conflicts” (<em><span id="ref319578"></span>murakata sōdō</em>) became more fierce in the later part of this period, as the farmers sought to <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="censure" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/censure" data-type="MW">censure</a> the improper acts of village officials and to make the village more democratic.
