and they attacked<MG2186> the house<MG3614> of Jason<MG2394> and were seeking<MG2212> to bring<MG4254> them out<MG4254> to the people<MG1218>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>When they did not find<MG2147> them, they <i>began</i> dragging<MG4951> Jason<MG2394> and some<MG5100> brothers<MG80> before<MG1909> the city<MG4173> authorities<MG4173>, shouting<MG994>, “These<MG3778> men<MG3778> who have upset<MG387> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>the world<MG3625> have come<MG3918b> here<MG1759a> also<MG2532>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>and Jason<MG2394> has welcomed<MG5264> them, and they all<MG3956> act<MG4238> contrary<MG561> to the decrees<MG1378> of Caesar<MG2541>, saying<MG3004> that there is another<MG2087> king<MG935>, Jesus<MG2424>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>They stirred<MG5015> up the crowd<MG3793> and the city<MG4173> authorities<MG4173> who heard<MG191> these<MG3778> things<MG3778>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And when they had received<MG2983> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>pledge<MG2425> from Jason<MG2394> and the others<MG3062>, they released<MG630> them. <p class="hdg">Paul in Berea</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>The brothers<MG80> immediately<MG2112> sent<MG1599> Paul<MG3972> and Silas<MG4609> away<MG1599> by night<MG3571> to Berea<MG960>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>and when they arrived<MG3854>, they went<MG549> into the synagogue<MG4864> of the Jews<MG2453>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> these<MG3778> people<MG3778> were more noble-minded<MG2104b> than those<MG3588> in Thessalonica<MG2332>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>for they received<MG1209> the word<MG3056> with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>great<MG3956> eagerness<MG4288>, examining<MG350> the Scriptures<MG1124> daily<MG2596, 2250> <i>to see</i> whether<MG1487> these<MG3778> things<MG3778> were so<MG3779>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767>, many<MG4183> of them believed<MG4100>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>along<MG2532> with a significant<MG3756, 3641> number<MG3756, 3641> of prominent<MG2158> Greek<MG1674> women<MG1135> and men<MG435>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>But when<MG5613> the Jews<MG2453> of Thessalonica<MG2332> found<MG1097> out<MG1097> that the word<MG3056> of God<MG2316> had been proclaimed<MG2605> by Paul<MG3972> in Berea<MG960> also<MG2532>, they came<MG2064> there<MG2546> as<MG2546> well<MG2546>, agitating<MG4531> and stirring<MG5015> up the crowds<MG3793>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> immediately<MG2112> the brothers<MG80> sent<MG1821> Paul<MG3972> out<MG1821> to go<MG4198> as<MG2193> far<MG2193> as<MG2193> the sea<MG2281>; and Silas<MG4609> and Timothy<MG5095> remained<MG5278> there<MG1563>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> those<MG3588> who escorted<MG2525> Paul<MG3972> brought<MG71> him as<MG2193> far<MG2193> as<MG2193> Athens<MG116>; and receiving<MG2983> a command<MG1785> for Silas<MG4609> and Timothy<MG5095> to come<MG2064> to him as soon<MG5030> as<MG5030> possible<MG5030>, they left<MG1826>. <p class="hdg">Paul in Athens</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> while Paul<MG3972> was waiting<MG1551> for<MG1551> them in Athens<MG116>, his spirit<MG4151> was being provoked<MG3947> within<MG1722> him as he observed<MG2334> that the city<MG4172> was full<MG2712> of<MG2712> idols<MG2712>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>So<MG3767> he was reasoning<MG1256> in the synagogue<MG4864> with the Jews<MG2453> and the God-fearing<MG4576> <i>Gentiles,</i> and in the marketplace<MG58> every<MG3956> day<MG2250> with those<MG3588> who happened<MG3909> to<MG3909> be<MG3909> present<MG3909>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And some<MG5100> of the Epicurean<MG1946b> and Stoic<MG4770> philosophers<MG5386> as<MG2532> well<MG2532> were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>conversing<MG4820> with him. Some<MG5100> were saying<MG3004>, “What<MG5101> could this<MG3778> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>scavenger<MG4691> of<MG4691> tidbits<MG4691> want<MG2309> to say<MG3004>?” Others<MG3588, 1161>, “He seems<MG1380> to be a proclaimer<MG2604> of strange<MG3581> deities<MG1140>,”—because<MG3754> he was preaching<MG2097> Jesus<MG2424> and the resurrection<MG386>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And they took<MG1949> him and brought<MG71> him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>Areopagus<MG697>, saying<MG3004>, “May<MG1410> we know<MG1097> what<MG5101> this<MG3778> new<MG2537> teaching<MG1322> is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>which you are proclaiming<MG2980>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>For you are bringing<MG1533> some<MG5100> strange<MG3579> things<MG3579> to our ears<MG189>; so<MG3767> we want<MG1014> to know<MG1097> what<MG5101> these<MG3778> things<MG3778> mean<MG2309, 1510>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>(Now<MG1161> all<MG3956> the Athenians<MG117> and the strangers<MG3581> visiting<MG1927> there used to spend<MG2119> their time<MG2119> in nothing<MG3762> other<MG2087> than<MG2228> telling<MG3004> or<MG2228> hearing<MG191> something<MG5100> new<MG2537>.) <p class="hdg">Sermon on Mars Hill</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>So<MG1161> Paul<MG3972> stood<MG2476> in the midst<MG3319> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>Areopagus<MG697> and said<MG5346>, “Men<MG435> of Athens<MG117>, I see<MG2334> that you are very<MG1175> religious<MG1175> in all<MG3956> respects<MG3956>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>For while I was passing<MG1330> through<MG1330> and examining<MG333> the objects<MG4574> of<MG4574> your worship<MG4574>, I also<MG2532> found<MG2147> an altar<MG1041> with this<MG3739> inscription<MG1924>, ‘TO AN UNKNOWN<MG57> GOD<MG2316>.’ Therefore<MG3767>, what<MG3739> you worship<MG2151> in ignorance<MG50>, this<MG3778> I proclaim<MG2605> to you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>The God<MG2316> who made<MG4160> the world<MG2889> and everything<MG3956> that is in it, since He is Lord<MG2962> of heaven<MG3772> and earth<MG1093>, does not dwell<MG2730> in temples<MG3485> made<MG5499> by<MG5499> hands<MG5499>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>nor<MG3761> is He served<MG2323> by human<MG442> hands<MG5495>, as though He needed<MG4326> anything<MG5100>, since He Himself<MG846> gives<MG1325> to all<MG3956> <i>people</i> life<MG2222> and breath<MG4157> and all<MG3956> things<MG3956>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>and He made<MG4160> from one<MG1520> <i>man</i> every<MG3956> nation<MG1484> of mankind<MG444> to live<MG2730> on all<MG3956> the face<MG4383> of the earth<MG1093>, having determined<MG3724> <i>their</i> appointed<MG4367> times<MG2540> and the boundaries<MG3734> of their habitation<MG2733a>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>that they would seek<MG2212> God<MG2316>, if<MG1487> perhaps<MG686> they might feel<MG5584> around<MG5584> for Him and find<MG2147> <i>Him,</i> though<MG2532, 1065> He is not far<MG3112> from each<MG1538> one<MG1520> of us; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>for in Him we live<MG2198> and move<MG2795> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>exist<MG1510>, as even<MG2532> some<MG5100> of your own poets<MG4163> have said<MG3004>, ‘For we also<MG2532> are His descendants<MG1085>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767>, since<MG3767> we are the descendants<MG1085> of God<MG2316>, we ought<MG3784> not to think<MG3543> that the Divine<MG2304> <i>Nature</i> is like<MG3664> gold<MG5557> or<MG2228> silver<MG696> or<MG2228> stone<MG3037>, an image<MG5480> formed<MG5480> by human<MG444> skill<MG5078> and thought<MG1761>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>So<MG3767> having overlooked<MG5237> the times<MG5550> of ignorance<MG52>, God<MG2316> is now<MG3568> proclaiming<MG518> to mankind<MG444> that all<MG3956> people<MG3956> everywhere<MG3837> are to repent<MG3340>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/17-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>because<MG2530> He has set<MG2476> a day<MG2250> on which<MG3739> He will<MG3195> judge<MG2919> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>the world<MG3625> in righteousness<MG1343> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>through<MG1722> a Man<MG435> whom<MG3739> He has appointed<MG3724>, having furnished<MG3930> proof<MG4102> to
