to investigate the impact of digital technologies on writing and reading within an educational rather than business environment. The methodology applied in this study is qualitative content analysis of the essays produced by the students. The principal results of this study show that reading and writing competencies are changing with the use of digital technologies but that paper and digital interactions are not mutually exclusive. Students are more productive textually with writing than with reading, however, they still see the virtues of writing on paper which they continue to use extensively. vincent</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">This paper offers a summative cross cultural analysis of qualitative survey data collected to investigate the impact of digital media on writing and reading within universities from different countries. It addresses the particular aspect of the student’s experiences of paper and pen versus digital media. This study is based on the results of individual qualitative research conducted in 10 countries in two continents by members of the COST Action FP1104, Work Group 1 – Customers and Users. The methodological approach used is qualitative content analysis of the reported research and analysis of the individual country surveys. The survey was conducted in the national language of each country using the same research questions. Various survey methods were deployed – online questionnaire; questionnaire and interviews or hand written essays. The principal results show that there are many similarities between the countries studied but that some use pen and paper less whereas others are more prepared to use hand writing, this may link to the availability and use of digital technologies as well as to personal preferences. Reading and writing competencies are changing with the use of digital technologies but students still see benefits of reading and writing with paper which they continue to use, especially to convey private emotions and intimate feelings. This study provides new learning about the contrasting use of paper and digital media within an educational rather than business setting. Writing and reading-both for classroom activities and for home study-increasingly reside in a digital environment and more and more often scroll across the screens of the students&#39; devices. However, research investigating the cognitive and learning process implications of digital reading and writing is still at the outset and it is difficult to establish the long-term effects this transition may have on education and training. This is also because while investigating the evolution of reading and writing in the age of digitization a variety of heterogeneous aspects must be taken into consideration, including ergonomic, cognitive, attentional-perceptive, emotional-empathic, phenomenological and socio-cultural aspects. At the same time, the results provided by both international surveys (e.g. OECD; PIRLS) and by studies conducted at a national level, warn us about potential &#39;collateral&#39; effects on the students&#39; performance produced by the intensive use of digital technology in class, and suggest to reconsider a series of issues related to the development of digital and non-digital skills and the &quot;abandonment&quot; of traditional reading and writing tools (e.g. handwriting). The study presented here falls within this research context. With the aim of consulting a group of students and teachers engaged in the use of new reading/writing devices, a survey was conducted involving all lower secondary school students of an Italian school, a member of the &quot;Avanguardie Educative&quot; (Educational Avant-gardes) school network, which aims to promote innovation in the Italian school system. Students (n. 138) were given an open-ended questionnaire to investigate a series of dimensions related to their reading and writing experiences supported by both digital and more traditional tools. The data were analyzed following the Grounded Theory coding procedures, in order to make sure that the concepts emerging from the analysis were strongly anchored in the students&#39; voices. The results of this first survey were subsequently integrated and enriched with those obtained through a series of focus groups with the students, followed by interviews with their teachers. handbooks on the his­ tory of literature, textbooks for higher education and contemporary papers on lite­ rature in general. 1 From this point of view, hypertext reception is rather insignificant and the issue of reading from and writing on screens is mentioned only cursorily. One might paraphrase Lautréamont and say that hypertext literature is as natural (interesting, enjoyable) as a chance meeting of a sewing machine and an umbrella on a dissecting table. Computers were at first associated with the natural sciences, arith­ metic and everything that is connected with machines, but not art. However, this argument cannot stand any longer, as computers are now everywhere: they surround us and are even embedded into art. 2 In this paper we argue that the answer to the question why the discussion of electronic literature and mainly hypertext is so poorly represented is found in the fact that there are two literatures in existence. Even though &quot; traditional &quot; literature is becoming entangled in digital media through its promotional, distributional and transmedial activity platforms, and as e­book readers that act as surrogates for paper are becoming more and more popular, the dominant narrative mode or linear nature of traditional literature continues to have a concrete border. On the other side of the border stands hypertext, which is multimodal, interactive and part of the new media discussion. If we accept this statement, then it is safe to say that these two literatures don&#39;t just differ in technical terms, such as paper versus screen, but that new media literature requires a completely different reading and writing canon. This is the the­ ory we will prove in this study. Starting from the fact that reading from screens requires a different strategy from the traditional approach to reading, we intend to prove that the context of hypertex­ tual, multimodal and interactive literary text demands a new theory. John M. Slatin predicted the new medium of hypertext would &quot; involve (…) both a new practice and a new rhetoric, a new body of theory &quot; (1990, 870). The context of screens – and using a broader approach media convergence 3 – not only alters the nature of reading but changes the methods of writing and the attributes of readers and writers as well. A large­scale body of literature on the topic of reading from paper versus screens can be found in psychology, human factors and ergono mics literature.
