It also seeks to better understand the ways in which elites negotiate and reinvent ritual traditions to gain and maintain power. In this study, I integrate multiple lines of evidence including ethnohistory, household archaeology and burials to understand the organization, practice and meaning of ritual among commoners before the rise of the Aztec Empire. I argue that pre-Aztec commoner ritual worked to foster solidarity, social continuity and collective memory and was intimately concerned with the protection of household members and the maintenance of household and universal equilibrium. While some of the symbolism and rituals documented in pre-Aztec domestic contexts appear similar to those depicted in Aztec contexts, I argue that state rituals held different meanings as Aztec elites adopted and transformed widely-held commoner rituals and symbols to craft an ideology that promoted their own political agenda. Ultimately, domestic- and state-level ritual should be seen as part of an ever-changing, but necessarily intertwined, historical and political I argue that during the Late Preclassic Period of Mesoamerican prehistory, the central organizing principle of this society was based upon descent, and that kin groups practiced ancestor worship as a manifestation of this social organization. Deep shade tombs, a hallmark of the Teuchitlan people, are the tangible archaeological remains of their social emphasis upon kin goops and principles of descent. My study study of the organization of an early West Mexican society relies upon evidence drawn from both art and archaeology. As part of their mortuary rituals, the Teuchitlan people placed ceramic architectural models containing figurines, into the tombs of the dead. My analysis of the architectural features and zoomorphic and anthropomorphic figural elements on 82 ceramic models identifies the theme of ancestor worship and ritual consumption. At Huitzilapa, a Late Preclassic site on the flanks of Tequila Volcano (excavated by INAH archaeologists Jorge Ramos and Lorenza Mestas), I further investigate evidence for kin groups and ritual consumption. My settlement pattern study reveals the imprint kinship in the form of domestic architecture, patio group residences and family altars. I infer that the Huitzilapans had corporate kin groups that were ranked vis-a-vis each other. My ceramic analysis explores further the practice of ritual consumption. I conclude that the Huitzilapans conducted private mortuary feasts and public annual feasts that commemorated the ancestors. I propose that the localized production of the native Agave tequila plant, restricted to the Tequila Volcano area, gave the Huitzilapans an unusual advantage over their neighbors. This plant may have provided a food surplus and the juices needed to prepare intoxicating drinks of pulque and mescal. The corporate control over the valuable agave fields may've been the impetus for the formation of ranked descent groups during the Late Preclassic Period. Before 4000 B.P. in conventional radiocarbon years, a nomadic egalitarian lifeway selected for unscheduled (ad hoc) ritual from which no one was excluded. With the establishment of permanent villages (4000 -3000 B.P.), certain rituals were scheduled by solar or astral events and restricted to initiates͞social achievers. After state formation (2050 B.P.), many important rituals were performed only by trained full-time priests using religious calendars and occupying temples built by corvé e labor. Yet the actions and choices made by the non-eilte can condition, change, and actively construct the structures that situate their everyday lives (Pauketat 2000; Robin 2003). For example, in his seminal article, Tragedy of the Commoners, Timothy Pauketat (2000), argues that through the unintended consequences of the actions of commoners, conditions are created that can enable their own subjugation. Furthermore, ritual and politics were inseparable since most rulers could not derive authority from exclusive control of material resources. This chapter explores the ways in which domestic and community ritual practices in the northern Maya lowlands engaged political relations at a variety of scales. Caches within buildings at small- and medium-sized settlements along an 18-km-long causeway stretching from Ucí to Cansahcab illustrate that domestic ritual in rural contexts was not independent of rituals conducted by actors with much greater authority. As defined here, ritual privileges refer to the exclusive right that discrete social segments possess over the production, maintenance, usage and distribution of particular items of regalia and ritual practices.
