He is mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments, and his life serves as an example of faith and righteousness.

Biblical References:
Enoch is first introduced in the genealogies of Genesis. He is the seventh generation from Adam, the son of Jared, and the father of Methuselah.

Genesis 5:18-24 :
"When Jared was 162 years old, he became the father of Enoch. And after he had become the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. So Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died. When Enoch was 65 years old, he became the father of Methuselah. And after he had become the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. So Enoch lived a total of 365 years. Enoch walked with God, and then he was no more, because God took him away."

Walked with God:
The phrase "walked with God" signifies a deep, intimate relationship with the Creator. Enoch's life was marked by faithfulness and obedience, setting him apart from his contemporaries. His walk with God is a testament to his righteousness and devotion.

Translation to Heaven:
Enoch's departure from the earth is unique. The Bible states, "he was no more, because God took him away" (Genesis 5:24). This implies that Enoch did not experience death in the traditional sense but was taken directly into God's presence. This event foreshadows the concept of eternal life and the hope of believers being taken to be with the Lord.

New Testament References:
Enoch is mentioned in the New Testament as an exemplar of faith.

Hebrews 11:5 :
"By faith Enoch was taken up so that he did not see death: 'He could not be found, because God had taken him away.' For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God."

This passage in Hebrews highlights Enoch's faith as the reason for his translation, emphasizing that his life was pleasing to God.

Jude 1:14-15 :
"Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied about them: 'Behold, the Lord is coming with myriads of His holy ones to execute judgment on everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of every ungodly act of wickedness and every harsh word spoken against Him by ungodly sinners.'"

Jude attributes a prophecy to Enoch, indicating his role as a prophet who spoke of God's coming judgment. This reference underscores Enoch's spiritual insight and his place in the biblical narrative as a herald of divine truth.

The Book of Enoch:
While not part of the canonical Bible, the Book of Enoch is an ancient Jewish text that expands on Enoch's life and visions. It is considered apocryphal by most Christian traditions but provides additional context to Enoch's character and the spiritual themes associated with him.

Legacy and Significance:
Enoch's life and translation have inspired theological reflection on the nature of faith, righteousness, and the hope of eternal life. His example encourages believers to walk closely with God, trusting in His promises and living in anticipation of His return.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Enoch
dedicated; disciplined
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Enoch
(dedicated).

The eldest son of Cain, (Genesis 4:17) who called after his name the city which he built. After the birth of Methuselah it is said, (Genesis 5:22-24) that Enoch "walked with God three hundred years... and he was not; for God took him." The phrase "walked with God" is elsewhere only used of Noah, (Genesis 6:9) cf. Genesis17:1 etc., and is to be explained of a prophetic life spent in immediate converse with the spiritual world. Like Elijah, he was translated without seeing death. In the Epistle to the Hebrews the spring and issue of Enoch's life are clearly marked. Both the Latin and Greek fathers commonly coupled Enoch and Elijah as historic witnesses of the possibility of a resurrection of the body and of a true human existence in glory. The expression "walked with God" denotes a devout life, lived in close communion with God, while the reference to his end has always been understood, as by the writer of He, to mean, "By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and he was not found, because God translated him" (Hebrews 11:5).

See further, APOCALYPTIC LITERATURE, sec. It is impossible to fix more definitely the locality of this first of cities, recorded, as Delitzsch says (Genesis, in the place cited.), as registering an advance in civilization.
