"Then David summoned the priests Zadok and Abiathar, and the Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab."

Role and Significance:

· Levitical Lineage: Uriel is a significant figure within the Levitical lineage, specifically from the Kohathite branch. The Kohathites were one of the three main divisions of the Levites, tasked with the care of the sanctuary and its sacred objects. Uriel's position as a leader among the Kohathites underscores his importance in the religious life of Israel.

· Leadership in Worship: Uriel's role in the transportation of the Ark of the Covenant highlights his leadership in worship and his dedication to the proper observance of religious rites. The Ark, representing God's presence, was central to Israelite worship, and Uriel's involvement in its movement signifies his trusted status among the Levites.

· Historical Context: During King David's reign, there was a renewed focus on establishing Jerusalem as the religious center of Israel. Uriel's participation in bringing the Ark to Jerusalem was part of this broader effort to centralize worship and reinforce the covenantal relationship between God and His people.

Theological Implications:

· Divine Guidance: The name Uriel, meaning "God is my light," suggests themes of divine guidance and revelation. In the biblical narrative, light often symbolizes God's presence, truth, and direction. Uriel's life and actions can be seen as a reflection of these themes, emphasizing the importance of following God's guidance in worship and leadership.

· Faithfulness to God's Commands: Uriel's involvement in the transportation of the Ark, a task that required strict adherence to God's instructions, highlights the importance of obedience and reverence in the service of God. His leadership exemplifies the role of the Levites as guardians of the sacred and as mediators between God and His people.

Extra-Biblical Traditions:

While Uriel is not extensively mentioned in the canonical texts of the Bible, he appears in various apocryphal and pseudepigraphal writings, such as the Book of Enoch, where he is often depicted as an archangel. These writings, however, are not considered authoritative in the conservative Christian tradition and are not included in the canon of Scripture. Nonetheless, they reflect the enduring interest in Uriel as a figure of divine wisdom and illumination.

Conclusion:

Uriel's presence in the biblical narrative, though limited, underscores the importance of faithful service and leadership in the worship of God. His role as a Levitical leader during a pivotal moment in Israel's history serves as a testament to the enduring significance of the Levites in maintaining the covenantal relationship between God and His people.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Uriel
same as Uriah
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Uriel
(the fire of God), an angel named only in 2 Esdr. 4:1,36; 5:20; 10:28.
Easton's Bible Dictionary
God is my light.
(1.) He was the angel who instructed Ezra (2 Esdras 4:1; 5:20; 10:28). In Enoch 20:2 Uriel is the angel who is "over the world and Tartarus" (ho epi tou kosmou kai tou tartarou), and as such is the conductor to Enoch in the world below, the secrets of which he explains. Compare also (Greek) 19:1; 21:05. In the (Latin) "Life of Adam and Eve," 48 (ed. W. Meyer in Abhand. d. Bayer. Akad. der Wiss., XIV, 1878, 250), Uriel (Oriel) accompanied Michael when at God's bidding he wrapped the bodies of Adam and Abel in three linen sheets and buried them in Paradise. In the lost "Prayer of Joseph" Uriel is the angel who wrestles and converses with Jacob and knows the secrets of heaven (as in Enoch those of Tartarus), but stands only 8th in rank, whereas in (Greek) Enoch 20:2; he is the 1st of the six (or seven) archangels. In Sib Or 2:229 he is entrusted with the judgment of the Titans.
