The objective of study was to investigate the relationship of using Facebook on students’ emotional states of depression, anxiety, and stress. A research design of descriptive correlational was used to investigate this research. And also linear regression and multivariate tests used to analysis the data. Cross-sectional research was selected from time perspective. The population of this study was 360 students who attend their education in 2020 academic calendar at the 3/three/ (General Wingate, Tegibard, and Entoto) Polytechnic colleges of Addis Ababa. The instrument of this study was standardized instruments i.e. Facebook Intensity Scale, and Depression, Anxiety and Stress (DASS-42/ scales. The data was collected in December first 2020. Correlation coefficients indicated that Facebook use and emotional states of depression(r=0.155, P=0.03), anxiety(r=0.138, P=0.009) and stress (r=0.110, P= 0.038) had a significant relationship. Time spent on Facebook correlated significantly with depression (r=0.162, P =0.002) and Anxiety (r =0.145, P=0.006). Number of Facebook friends and emotional states of depression, anxiety and stress did not have any significant relationship. The three emotional states/ depression, anxiety and stress/ had a significant relationship. Linear regression coefficients (Beta) showed that there was a significant relationship between Facebook intensity, and emotional states of depression, anxiety and stress. Moreover, the result showed that there is significant evidence that relationship exists between Facebook intensity, and depression, anxiety and stress. There was no gender difference statistically found on time spent on Facebook and prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress. It was found that Facebook membership date and the amount of time spent on Facebook per day variables have significant effect on addiction. Facebook was made to help students and its users to socialize with other people and do urgent tasks online but due to many negative effects, it does not help its users anymore if abused. Facebook must be used in limited time and reasonable purpose to be productive. The problem is that there are negative effects of using Facebook which can greatly affect the students and the fact that it is left unsettled. The students may not be aware of the possible consequences they may encounter with the irresponsible use of Facebook. The growing problem needs to be solved to avoid acquiring the negative effects that Facebook can bring to its users. After comparing the data gathered from the survey and the literature and studies, the researchers conclude that 18 percent of the male junior high school is addicted to Facebook and 15 percent are overly addicted to it. The researchers found out that positive effects are more dominant to students than the negative effects. The researchers conclude that one of the negative effects of Facebook is distraction as supported by the result of the survey. Results: Among ZU students, 81.2% was the prevalence of Facebook (fb) use, 9.7% was the prevalence of internet addiction 45.3% were potentially addict , 19.2% of them had abnormal depression scale, and only 9.6% had abnormal anxiety scale. There was no statistical significant relationship between using fb and the studied demographic variables (age, sex, class…) except the faculty. While using fb is significantly associated with Internet Addiction and have no statistical significant effect on depression or anxiety scale among the studied ZU students. The data has been collected through convenient purposive sampling by using Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale Andreaessen and colleagues for measuring Facebook addiction, Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (2006) for measuring depression, Severity Measure for Generalized Anxiety Disorder for measuring anxiety © 2013 American Psychiatric Association, UCLA loneliness scale (1996) was used to measure loneliness & academic performance was measured by asking their previous class percentage. Correlation technique was employed for statistical analysis and significance was measured. Study revealed that there is linear interaction between Facebook addiction and anxiety as well as depression, however there was no correlation found between Facebook addiction, loneliness & academic performance. According to stated study it is concluded that Facebook is imparting negative impact on mental and social life of the students which are spending maximum time. The study also reveals that in future prospective interaction may be occurring on the performance of the students in their respective studies. Facebook is the most popular among them. Now a days, a large number of people from the whole world are using it. With a good portion in making human relation, there is also a bad part of it. Excessive use of Facebook or Facebook addiction can cause trauma and mental disorder of the users. The changes in their behavior come as a mental disorder, which is famously known as Facebook Addiction Disorder (FAD). This is a real one whose symptoms may be as somatic symptoms, anxiety, insomnia, loneliness, severe depression, suicidal tendency, low confidence, social dysfunction which in turn effect on their study, jobs, family relationships, social relationship etc. This is a worldwide problem and people especially adolescents are the main victims of it. In India, this problem is growing rapidly which is subjected to worry. The main objective of the topic is to find out if there are any differences in different dimensions and overall mental health between Facebook addicted and Facebook non-addicted adolescent college students of West Bengal. A sample size of 200 1st year engineering students was selected and taken up for the study. General health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) by Goldberg & Hillier and Facebook Addiction Test (FAT) by the investigator himself is used for the study.
