Together with those who focus on drug research, researchers are working to understand these issues and develop treatments and cures. Other aspects of the department's research focus on developing new antibiotics: an urgent priority since resistance to existing drugs is so prevalent around the world. Otolaryngology was one of the first “specialties” that came into existence. It did so because of the special training and skills that were required to see recesses within the nose, throat and ears. In more recent times, otolaryngology has evolved into subdisciplines and each of the areas are well represented in the University of British Columbia’s Division of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.</p> </div> </div> <h2 class="section__title">Engineering Science (Biomedical Engineering), SFU</h2> <div class="layout layout__column layout__parent__paragraph paragraph paragraph--type--column paragraph--view-mode--default" id="paragraph--134"> <div class="field--field_paragraph_text"> <p><a href="http://www.sfu.ca/engineering.html"><img alt="SFU Engineering" data-entity-type data-entity-uuid src="https://www.bccrc.ca/dept/io/sites/integrativeoncology/files/2019-10/SFU%20Engineering.jpg" class="align-center"></a></p> <p>Our biomedical engineers have the same foundation in programming, electronics and systems engineering but use those tools for improving health outcomes. This program is recognized by both the Canadian Dermatological Association and the American Academy of Dermatology.
