Indeed, the RMG industry in Bangladesh has made it possible to create paid employment opportunities for a large cohort of poor and vulnerable women. As the largest contributor to Bangladesh's export earnings, the garment sector has undoubtedly played a significant role in the country's economic progress. Drawing comparisons to other countries' industrial revolutions, it examines how Bangladesh's reliance on low-cost labor and quota facilities initially propelled the sector's rapid growth. However, the paper argues that this reliance has stifled the industry's long-term development, as it disincentivized investments in technological upgrades, productivity enhancements, and diversification into higher-value products. Despite the garment industry's role in boosting Bangladesh's exports, its potential for economic development has been hampered by several factors. Low wages, poor working conditions, and job insecurity have created a negative impact on the industry's ability to contribute to poverty reduction and income growth. Although the industry has provided employment opportunities, particularly for women, the paper raises concerns about the sustainability of these jobs due to short-term employment and exploitative practices. Additionally, the industry's limited ability to stimulate other sectors and drive structural changes has restricted its overall impact on Bangladesh's economic development. Based on secondary data, the study is intended to draw the scenario of RMG industry in Bangladesh, especially the growth, contribution, and challenges. It is the largest exporting industry in Bangladesh that has experienced tremendous growth during the last 25 years. Among the people of Bangladesh, about 4 million workers are directly employed in RMG sector. Therefore, the contribution of RMG in total export is increasing day by day. At present, 83.9% of national export in Bangladesh is contributed by RMG export although it was 3.89% in 1983-1984. In fiscal year (FY) 2017-2018, the percentage of ready-made garments (RMG) contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) is 12.26% but it was only 2.74% in FY 1990-1991. So, it indicates that RMG sector is the main contributor of Bangladesh's economy, especially in the export of the country. This sector also faces a lot of challenges, like unskilled workers, insufficient infrastructure, raw materials, energy crisis, safety issue, political crisis, and coverage of accord and alliance. It survived Multi-Fiber Arrangement (MFA) phase out at the end of 2004, and remains internationally competitive to date. In this chapter, sources of competitiveness of the industry were discussed. There are three potential strengths, i.e. market force, government policy and dynamism inside the industry. Market force, which is represented by low wage of labor, is surely fundamental to the competitiveness.
