Vargas Llosa’s repeated presentation of Amazonia as a verdant, virgin site of adventure, violence and injustice clearly links his work to the Latin American telluric novels of the 1920s and 1930s, despite Vargas Llosa’s proclaimed low opinion of that genre. In fact, Vargas Llosa composes a literary wilderness that reveals his fractious and long-standing relationship with the novela de la selva. El escritor peruano abrió su discurso agradeciendo a sus anfitriones el que se le considerara un “ser unificado”, en contraste con muchos de sus críticos en el mundo hispano, quienes tienden a separar su obra literaria de sus ideas políticas. A la luz de esta afirmación, en este ensayo me propongo contextualizar la representación de lo indígena y del indigenismo en su ficción con la evolución de su pensamiento político. Como nos recuerda Efraín Kristal, según la doctrina de los demonios de la creación literaria de Vargas Llosa, “a writer is not responsible for his literary themes, and his personal convictions may contradict the contents and messages of his literary works” (197). No obstante, como veremos, existe un denominador común entre las novelas que se discutirán en este ensayo y el pensamiento político del autor en el momento en que se publicaron, aun si, como se puede Her contemporaries, intrigued with her performances both on-stage and off, produced a number of visual and literary portraits commemorating the actress. This article contends that these portraits are intertwined in ways that merit further exploration, both in terms of content and circulation. By exploring the representation of the actress according to multiple biographers, playwrights and Ricardo Palma’s Tradiciones (1877), I argue that literary and visual portraits of Villegas provide insight into the contradictory roles of the eighteenth-century Peruvian actress.
