It is possible to see examples of culturally significant industrial buildings’ adaptive reuse. Altering adaptations as film spaces has become a fascinating debate recently. The aim of this study is to investigate efficiency of adapting industrial heritage buildings as film spaces on the long-term conservation and sustainable future of these buildings. Three industrial buildings that have been adaptively reused as film spaces in İstanbul, Turkey (soap-factory, warehouse for carbonated water and listed building at Beykoz Leather and Shoe Factory) are cases of this study. This study concludes that cultural significance is retained due to minimal changes observed on the external characteristics. Their reuse as film spaces has enriched the physical, locational/ environmental and social/cultural performance of industrial heritage buildings. Two different approaches as temporary and permanent have been investigated. This study concludes that adapting industrial heritage buildings as film spaces is an appropriate decision, especially when it is adopted permanently with holistic/comprehensive approach from the beginning of adaptation process as creative hub of production. Results suggest that this approach has brought diverse additional impacts, both to conservation of these significant buildings and to their locations’ social, physical and economic well-being.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"ugur Unfortunately, there are lots of industrial building which lost its function by converting the place to live and identifiable place. This research will clarify the reasons for conserving of the industrial heritage and by classification of international charters which are dealing with industrial heritage will introduce conservation methods for adaptive reuse of industrial buildings. As a case study, the research will focus on Energy Museum in Istanbul. To assess the building based on reusing principals. The study concludes that the Energy Museum is one of the successful examples of reuse of the building. It also concludes that less intervention in reusing a building can save the identity of the building.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Adaptive Reuse of the Industrial Building: A case of Energy Museum in Sanatistanbul, Turkey","attachmentId":65734914,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/45157994/Adaptive_Reuse_of_the_Industrial_Building_A_case_of_Energy_Museum_in_Sanatistanbul_Turkey","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/45157994/Adaptive_Reuse_of_the_Industrial_Building_A_case_of_Energy_Museum_in_Sanatistanbul_Turkey"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="1" data-entity-id="108378365" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/108378365/ADAPTIVE_REUSE_POTENTIAL_OF_CULTURAL_HERITAGE_THE_CASE_OF_ISTANBUL_DRAPERS_BAZAAR">ADAPTIVE REUSE POTENTIAL OF CULTURAL HERITAGE: THE CASE OF ISTANBUL DRAPERS’ BAZAAR</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="5531517" href="https://atlas.academia.edu/P%C4%B1nar%C3%96ktemErkartal">Pınar Öktem Erkartal</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">ACEE Journal, 2023</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">The main objective of the study is to investigate the possibilities of adaptive reuse for the protection of cultural heritage buildings. It aims to set Istanbul Drapers’ Bazaar (IDB), as an example of the buildings with similar characteristics and importance and for the cities hosting those structures upon an application of the AdaptSTAR method, which was developed to assess the conversion potential of buildings. Focused on a bazaar complex, an important example of modern architectural heritage, the present study contributes to the healthy transfer of the building to future generations and the improvement of its international recognition by investigating it in the context of convertibility. In this study, a mixed-mode research methodology including a two-stage approach was adopted. The first stage includes detailed qualitative interviews conducted with the architect and the administrative unit manager of the bazaar complex. The second stage consists of a survey conducted with a group of 45 experts, composed of scholars and professionals in Turkey. The results of the study suggest that it is necessary to develop IDB, especially in physical and technological terms and its function should be reconsidered. In particular, it was seen that economic issues constituted one of the major obstacles via-a-vis the continuity of use of largescale buildings. Furthermore, it was realized that the artworks across the building group increased the importance of preserving the buildings and contributed to the possibility of their new functions being envisaged in the culture-art axis.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"ADAPTIVE REUSE POTENTIAL OF CULTURAL HERITAGE: THE CASE OF ISTANBUL DRAPERS’ BAZAAR","attachmentId":106778760,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/108378365/ADAPTIVE_REUSE_POTENTIAL_OF_CULTURAL_HERITAGE_THE_CASE_OF_ISTANBUL_DRAPERS_BAZAAR","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/108378365/ADAPTIVE_REUSE_POTENTIAL_OF_CULTURAL_HERITAGE_THE_CASE_OF_ISTANBUL_DRAPERS_BAZAAR"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="2" data-entity-id="105277729" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/105277729/Questioning_the_Adaptive_Reuse_of_Industrial_Heritage_and_Its_Interventions_in_the_Context_of_Sustainability">Questioning the Adaptive Reuse of Industrial Heritage and Its Interventions in the Context of Sustainability</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="2055185" href="https://independent.academia.edu/KaganGunce">Kagan Gunce</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Sociology Study, 2015</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Questioning the Adaptive Reuse of Industrial Heritage and Its Interventions in the Context of Sustainability","attachmentId":104775672,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/105277729/Questioning_the_Adaptive_Reuse_of_Industrial_Heritage_and_Its_Interventions_in_the_Context_of_Sustainability","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/105277729/Questioning_the_Adaptive_Reuse_of_Industrial_Heritage_and_Its_Interventions_in_the_Context_of_Sustainability"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="3" data-entity-id="112856252" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/112856252/ADAPTIVE_REUSE_OF_HERITAGE_ARCHITECTURE_AS_A_SUSTAINABLE_DEVELOPMENT_TOOL_OPPORTUNITIES_AND_CHALLENGES">ADAPTIVE REUSE OF HERITAGE ARCHITECTURE AS A SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT TOOL: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="299352238" href="https://independent.academia.edu/DobriyalRanjana">Ranjana Dobriyal</a><span>, </span><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="181820742" href="https://independent.academia.edu/ShodhKosh">Shodh Kosh</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Granthaalayah Publications and Printers, 2023</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">History plays an important role in defining our present and future. Architectural heritage is the symbol of our cultural identities, acting as remnants from the past. Respect and values of the architecture heritage affect the identity and vision of the culture. The existence of architecture is defined in both time and space, therefore the need for historical monuments to be adapted and reused suited for current time while satisfying the historical context and cultural values, is the present-day demand to bring people together who are otherwise separated by certain boundaries. With the current technological advancement, the 21st century skyline places focus on glass and metal facades that lack personality, hence there is a need for more effort to conserve and readapt heritage sites that stem from our cultures and our values. The purpose of the study is to create awareness towards a more sustainable approach for heritage conservation by adaptive reuse and understand the influence it has on the various sectors of a society and its residents. Based on a qualitative methodology, with a case study approach, this paper uses observation, in-depth interviews, and textual analysis to explore possibilities of sustainable transformation of architectural heritage in present and transferring the culture and values to future. This research paper will open further opportunities in this field to understand the factors behind the influence of these intangible and tangible variables and can be utilized to raise a country to an international standard of competition in terms of economy and societal norms.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"ADAPTIVE REUSE OF HERITAGE ARCHITECTURE AS A SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT TOOL: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES","attachmentId":109959061,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/112856252/ADAPTIVE_REUSE_OF_HERITAGE_ARCHITECTURE_AS_A_SUSTAINABLE_DEVELOPMENT_TOOL_OPPORTUNITIES_AND_CHALLENGES","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/112856252/ADAPTIVE_REUSE_OF_HERITAGE_ARCHITECTURE_AS_A_SUSTAINABLE_DEVELOPMENT_TOOL_OPPORTUNITIES_AND_CHALLENGES"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="4" data-entity-id="91181591" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/91181591/Designing_the_Sustainable_Adaptive_Reuse_of_Industrial_Heritage_to_Enhance_the_Local_Context">Designing the Sustainable Adaptive Reuse of Industrial Heritage to Enhance the Local Context</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="186638586" href="https://independent.academia.edu/DeGregorioStefania">Stefania De Gregorio</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Sustainability, 2020</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Since the European Year of Cultural Heritage, adaptive reuse is considered a strategy for intervention on historical buildings and territories to preserve and enhance artifacts, cities, and communities. Adaptive reuse can also generate social and economic benefits. This work looks at adaptive reuse in the context of industrial heritage, which represents an excellent test benchmark because of its intrinsic architectural characteristics and its localization in the city suburbs. The paper puts forward a methodological approach, verified through the application to a case study, which analyzes both the local context and the building. buildings are heritages that play a strategic role in the sustainable building environment need to be protected, and the continuation of the building stock from the past to the present should be ensured. With the concept of adaptive reuse, it is important that historical buildings gain new functional features with contemporary additions, ensure the continuity of cultures and carry the traces of the past to future generations. The aim of this study is to determine the adaptive reuse strategy of historic buildings, and to observe how contemporary additions are integrated to maintain a sustainable form of conservation. The research question of th study is how the contemporary additions that can meet the needs of the reuse of the historical buildings are applied. The building samples obtained through the literature review were evaluated in terms of physical aspects include criteria such as the size and mass of the additions, material selection, and the suitability of the existing historical building to the new function by using the comparative analysis method. It has been determined that although the designs of the additions are different from each other, most of the additions to the existing buildings are made for commercial and cultural purposes and involve steel and glass materials. The built environment can be revitalized as a result of bringing these buildings to society, using new functions and contemporary materials, and introducing economic, socio-cultural, and environmental innovations.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Sustainable Adaptive Reuse Strategy Evaluation for Cultural Heritage Buildings","attachmentId":108258391,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/110439372/Sustainable_Adaptive_Reuse_Strategy_Evaluation_for_Cultural_Heritage_Buildings","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/110439372/Sustainable_Adaptive_Reuse_Strategy_Evaluation_for_Cultural_Heritage_Buildings"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="8" data-entity-id="69486118" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/69486118/Reuse_Potential_within_Industrial_Heritage_Tourism">Reuse Potential within Industrial Heritage Tourism</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="57160075" href="https://independent.academia.edu/natalieferranti">natalie ferranti</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">2019</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Reuse Potential within Industrial Heritage Tourism","attachmentId":79565607,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/69486118/Reuse_Potential_within_Industrial_Heritage_Tourism","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/69486118/Reuse_Potential_within_Industrial_Heritage_Tourism"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="9" data-entity-id="39234373" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/39234373/ADAPTIVE_REUSE_OF_INDUSRTIAL_BUILDINGS">ADAPTIVE REUSE OF INDUSRTIAL BUILDINGS</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="100484331" href="https://unipune.academia.edu/AkshaySingavi">Akshay Singavi</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">2018</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">“The greenest building is the building which is already built.” while quoting architect Carl Elefante, Director of Sustainable Design at Qunin Evans Architects in Washington, D.C. (Sidler, 2014) Human population is going to increase over time and so are its needs. And one of our basic needs is land. Land for construction, agriculture, transport etc. But, how much ever our demands increase, the net surface area availability on ground would stay constant. In this face, we need newer buildings and for which often our older buildings, many a times, buildings with cultural and heritage value are also taken down. Does need of newer buildings directly point to razing down of older structures? Do these buildings not possess a value which is beyond monetary terms? Moreover, is this method of raze and rebuild over it, a sustainable practice? A non-maintained building, which has long lost its purpose and now stands in ruins, often turns into a hub for vandals, drug peddlers and other anti-social activities. Social psychology studies often quote the “The broken window theory” which states - if a broken window is left broken and not replaced, it is probable that soon all the other windows would be broken too. The window becomes a symbol to the society that no one cares. Such situations have immediate impact on their surroundings and also spread out eventually, leading to desertion of an entire vicinity. Hence, adaptive reuse of older neighborhoods, buildings and structures can also help in controlling the urban sprawl and thus impacting the development of the urban fabric of a city. It generates a relation between the user and the buildings, as these buildings are brought back to their former glory. Adaptive reuse is a method of utilizing existing buildings, renovating them and inducing new uses in the building, other than the one for which it was built. The site itself is a green alternative to green field development. Adaptive reuse is an essential tool to preserve the 8 history of a city and put old, unused and unhabituated but structurally sound buildings to newer uses. Industrial buildings, due to their large footprints and utilitarian architecture possess a high potential to undergo adaptive reuse. Considering the high carbon footprint and embodied energy, razing down industrial buildings or complexes has adverse effects on the environment as well. These buildings, due to their scale and proportions, as well as history that revolves around them, are important exhibits of a city’s industrial history which makes them worthy of conservation. Mumbai has a rich industrial history which witnessed a dominance of various cotton textile mills across the island city. With change in industrial development and pattern these mills got shut down. Eventually, these land parcels are now luring developers and land sharks, who want to raze down these iconic structures to lead way for soaring apartment blocks. The purpose of this design thesis is to display methods for reusing an industrial structure, in a sustainable manner, while protecting its original visual characteristics. It would focus on techniques in which the building could be reused and additions could be made to meet LEED standards, while preserving the original character of the buildings. An important palette of techniques was recorded in the dissertation, which has become the design guideline for this project.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"ADAPTIVE REUSE OF INDUSRTIAL BUILDINGS","attachmentId":59365518,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/39234373/ADAPTIVE_REUSE_OF_INDUSRTIAL_BUILDINGS","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/39234373/ADAPTIVE_REUSE_OF_INDUSRTIAL_BUILDINGS"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":74996659,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":74996659,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_74996659" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
