While determining the extent of intervention, the historic and cultural background of the building plays a very important role. Therefore in adaptive reuse, before starting to develop design proposals, buildings of cultural significance need to be analyzed carefully in order to determine architectural and spatial potentials. This paper aims to evaluate the process and results of a design studio, which was realized during 2014-2015 Fall Semester in the ITU Department of Interior Architecture. The main purpose of the studio experience was to create adaptive reuse proposals for a historic commercial building by focusing on the theme of “functional unity”. In the first phase of the study, course program was organized in three basic steps: analyzing spatial potential, determining compatible use and developing project proposals. At the end of every step there was a jury to evaluate each phase. Every step had its own priorities and criteria for the jury. After evaluations project proposals were classified according to their main foci as well as advantages and disadvantages of different approaches in terms of functional unity. As a result it was observed that in historic buildings there are different ways of maintaining functional unity based on the intention of the intervention. While identifying compatible use or uses for a historic building, functional unity needs to be evaluated as one of the basic design criteria in order to retain its cultural significance. This is mainly because a historic building can fully reveal it’s potential only if it is experienced and evaluated as a whole.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"nilufer saglar However, throughout architectural education, functioning historical structures and producing new designs in terms of historical pattern do not attract great attention within the framework of design studios. It is a fact that in such schools that abovementioned items are more popular, the connection between protection oriented studio and design studio is pretty weak. In this study refunctioning was discussed as a design studio topic in relation to the old girls" teacher training school and its immediate surroundings. The primary objective of this design studio is to increase architecture students" awareness in terms of visual and perceptual levels of project designs in historical patterns. Since reuse is considered an integral part of conservation, it is very important to preserve the social and cultural characteristics of the building. Indicators; It is a communication tool that technology provides us. The new function given to the buildings in order to preserve and keep alive the vitality of the historical buildings is generally the space that provides an environment for mutual communication between individuals. It is important to reshape the building in a way that preserves its traditional position, composition and balance without disturbing its connection with the environment. However, while doing this, the harmony of the new concept and the building may not overlap. The incompatibility of some unchangeable equipment of the historical building or the materials belonging to the period and today's contemporary preferences can create a handicap. In this research, two sample buildings are used to test how modern and dynamic display concepts can be combined with historical buildings. For this reason, the Tate Modern and Orsay Museum examples were chosen because they are similar in scale and have been recently renovated.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Concept-Function Harmony In Re-Designed Buildings: Adaptation Of Historical Buildings And Gallery Space","attachmentId":78936551,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/68474039/Concept_Function_Harmony_In_Re_Designed_Buildings_Adaptation_Of_Historical_Buildings_And_Gallery_Space","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Evaluating Partial Reuse of Historical Buildings as Commercial Interiors
nilufer saglar onay

The International Journal of Architectonic, Spatial, and Environmental Design, 2014

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Evaluating Partial Reuse of Historical Buildings as Commercial Interiors","attachmentId":56440119,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/28529909/Evaluating_Partial_Reuse_of_Historical_Buildings_as_Commercial_Interiors","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

RE-FUNCTIONING OF HISTORICAL BUILDINGS: TOPHANE-I AMIRE BUILDING IN THE SCOPE OF DESIGN STUDIO COURSE
Belis Öztürk

RE-FUNCTIONING OF HISTORICAL BUILDINGS: TOPHANE-I AMIRE BUILDING IN THE SCOPE OF DESIGN STUDIO COURSE, 2023

Re-functioning makes it possible to preserve historical structures' continuity, one of the most important aspects of cultural heritage. The interior architect who will be involved in the re-functioning process must have the requisite training and expertise in order for the project to succeed and produce the desired results. Design studio courses cover the majority of the information an interior architect should know about the subject of design. In this vein, the subject of re-functioning the Tophane-i Amire building as a museum was studied with the fourth-year students of Maltepe University's Department of Interior Architecture as part of the design studio course. This theoretical study uses a phenomenological perspective and qualitative research techniques to examine the project process. The study material comprises the subject, concept, drawings, and visuals in the projects that were submitted in at the end of the term. The students' approaches and interventions to historical buildings were examined within the scope of the course and in line with their own concepts. As a result, it was seen that the students were attentive to the interventions to the historical structure by providing the restrictions and spatial construction needs determined at the beginning of the lesson in the projects.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"RE-FUNCTIONING OF HISTORICAL BUILDINGS: TOPHANE-I AMIRE BUILDING IN THE SCOPE OF DESIGN STUDIO COURSE","attachmentId":104005766,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/104218337/RE_FUNCTIONING_OF_HISTORICAL_BUILDINGS_TOPHANE_I_AMIRE_BUILDING_IN_THE_SCOPE_OF_DESIGN_STUDIO_COURSE","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Evaluation Method for the Exploration of Old Buildings in Architectural Design Studio
Saniya Tabassum

Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research), 2022

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Evaluation Method for the Exploration of Old Buildings in Architectural Design Studio","attachmentId":104785824,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/105292235/Evaluation_Method_for_the_Exploration_of_Old_Buildings_in_Architectural_Design_Studio","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

An atlas of "architectural design for existing buildings": towards a definition of founding design actions
marco borsotti, C. With the concept of adaptive reuse, it is important that historical buildings gain new functional features with contemporary additions, ensure the continuity of cultures and carry the traces of the past to future generations. The aim of this study is to determine the adaptive reuse strategy of historic buildings, and to observe how contemporary additions are integrated to maintain a sustainable form of conservation. The research question of th study is how the contemporary additions that can meet the needs of the reuse of the historical buildings are applied. The building samples obtained through the literature review were evaluated in terms of physical aspects include criteria such as the size and mass of the additions, material selection, and the suitability of the existing historical building to the new function by using the comparative analysis method. It has been determined that although the designs of the additions are different from each other, most of the additions to the existing buildings are made for commercial and cultural purposes and involve steel and glass materials. The built environment can be revitalized as a result of bringing these buildings to society, using new functions and contemporary materials, and introducing economic, socio-cultural, and environmental innovations.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Sustainable Adaptive Reuse Strategy Evaluation for Cultural Heritage Buildings","attachmentId":108258391,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/110439372/Sustainable_Adaptive_Reuse_Strategy_Evaluation_for_Cultural_Heritage_Buildings","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Thesis - Interior adaptation within the existing built environment. It focuses on the necessity of restoration, preservation and adaptive reuse as possible solutions when approaching a new project concerning an existing building. Through the study of books, current journals and relevant projects, a universal understanding is formed about approaches that can be used to react to the existing built environment. Also discussed are the more challenging situations that can arise, such as how to deal with heritage, contentious places or the concept of memory of place. Examples and case studies are worldwide to appeal to a greater audience. The thesis outlines and defines possibilities for repairing, restoring, and protecting the existing built environment while keeping them practical in the current time. Before concluding the thesis, a design project, done in conjunction with the thesis, is discussed and explores how the different approaches and interventions discussed can be used to react to a site based on the specific site’s history, value and intangible qualities.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Thesis - Interior adaptation within the existing built environment.
