It depends. This paper sets out to distinguish between the current mass digital culture and an authentic post-digital culture. If we mean “post-digital” as the full internalization and awareness of the result of the so-called digital revolution, then it is necessary a philosophical work to discuss related problems, identify the causes and propose solutions. An authentic philosophy of digital will, however, have to start from a clarification of the terms and basic objects of its investigation. Here media theory is inserted as an analytical tool: the purpose of this essay is to outline a road map for a good media theory that interfaces with questions of definition of digital, also in light of the notions of space, time, and matter. As will be seen, the description given here for a “good media theory” does, in fact, coincide with an already existing – and inserted in the contemporary debate – school. The paper proposes that more attention has to be paid to cultural studies as a means for the understanding of digital society. The approach is based on the idea that the digital revolution’s essence is fully manifested in the cultural changes that take place in society. Cultural changes are discussed in connection with the digital society’s transformations, such as blurring the distinction between reality and virtuality and among people, nature, and artifacts, and the reversal from informational scarcity to abundance. The presented study develops a general model of culture. This model describes the spiritual, social, and technological facets of culture. It is not easy to define the digital culture itself and what a cultural history of the digital means. It is unclear what we have in mind with the digital (often used in an oversimplified sense to simply mean the Internet): The geographical horizon of this culture is unclear, and lastly the main trends are unclear. What is more, too many aspects of the contemporary digital landscape are taken for granted, as if “natural”, while they are historically determined. This is the reason why history is so helpful in reconstructing the origins, the changes, the main trends of digital media, simply because it shows how they came into being and they were metabolized by the cultures. This discussion aims to clarify these elements or at least discuss them critically, whereby“critically” is meant first of all in the etymological sense of differentiating, second in the sense of not accepting prima facie what is generally considered to be obvious. In this context, I approach a few controversial themes such as distributed communities, diluted communities, functional communities, normalization or the idea that the Internet is a valuable resource for overcoming the fear of public exposure and diminishing or erasing the physical distances among individuals. 138 As Leah Lievrouw and Sonia Livingstone state , the germs of the contemporary debate on the new means of communication can be traced back to the early decades of the 20th century, which brought forward the contribution of an economist named Joseph Schumpeter, whose theories concerning economic development had a significant impact on information society research. On the one hand, sociology -owing to the contributions of Daniel Bell or Anthony Giddens -outlined a series of descriptive categories of the postindustrial society, and, on the other hand, it analysed the means of changing the perception of time and space in a context dictated by the information technologies. At the same time, sociologists discussed the question of whether these means of communication can be considered or not as surveillance and control tools. In this respect, James Beniger suggested the phrase the revolution of control to refer to the shift facilitated by the communication technologies which appeared towards the end of the 19th century. In its turn, social psychology brought forward prolific concepts to account for the changes which were, during the 70's and the 80's, in statu nascendi. Therefore, the telepresence, mentioned by Robert Johansen in the context of the advent of the videoconference, anticipates the nowadays Internet structures. Anonymity, considered in the context of the electronic message exchange, has significantly contributed to disinhibiting the participants to communication, thus creating the premises of an informal, authentic interactivity, unconstrained by complementary frameworks.
