Estimation by Cisco says that more than 50 billion devices will be connected to the internet in the 21st Century. To make the cities greener, safer, and more efficient, Internet of Things (IoT) can play an important role. Improvement in safety and quality of life can be achieved by connecting devices, vehicles and infrastructure all around in a city. System integrators, network operators and technology providers have a role to play in working with governments to enable smart solutions. But, building such solutions on an open, standards-based communications platform that can be continuously used is a challenge. We present a waste collection management solution based on providing intelligence to waste bins, using an IoT prototype with sensors. Things would become "SMART" and influence the lives of humans. It can read, collect, and transmit huge volume of data over the Internet. With technological advancement in urbanization, industrialization and population governments across the global will need to device sustainable development plans. In recent years the notion of Smart City has been trending across the global and government is investing huge sums of money towards establishing smarter cities. A Smart Waste Management System makes a smart city complete. In this project we are going to use a range of smart sensors for detecting various data required for converting a normal dustbin into a smart dustbin. The govt. of India has launched the smart city project and 'Swach Bharath Abhiyan' to improve the city's infrastructure. Solid waste management is must in developing countries mainly due to the increasing generation of waste. The burden posed on the municipal budget is high associated to waste management. Even with great route optimization, the worker must still physically go to the dustbin to check waste levels so, dustbin is integrated with microcontroller and sensors, and elevated the normal dustbin to work smart. The system sends the real time information about the status of the dustbin such as level, garbage thrown out, smell, smoke, fire etc. using GPS and displays the status of the dustbin on LCD. Garbage is the major problem in the under developed places It is found that most cases the trashes are spread across the road side because it is not collected on time. This trash leads to spread of disease and cause illness. There is a possibility of having some deadly disease. So, the proposed systems find the solution for the garbage disposal by designing a smart dust bin by managing the garbage. The garbage is collected, and the garbage collector sent from the control room. The smart dustbin sends the message to the control room through the sensors attached to it. Most of the dustbins across the cities remains unattended due to negligence and a smaller number of employees in cleaning system. Especially during festival seasons, you can see dustbins overfilled and extra garbage near bins. The dirt creates several health hazards and issues for the people. Our initiative is to use the IoT technology to create a dustbin which should be able to alert about the overfilling and help the cleaners to come and clean them. The overfilling updates of dustbins and execution of the entire process is monitored and controlled by ATMEGA 328P-PU Microcontroller of Arduino Nano. Whenever the dirt reaches the upper limit the system immediately updates the information to the municipal corporation department to clean that. In between also if the locality people want to complain about the uncertainty of cleaning, they can do so by just pressing the complaint button which updates the complaint status through IoT. Overall system can be monitored through LCD display attached in the project.
