An explanation of why these claims are not new from a historical perspective requires a deep understanding of the landscape of modern childhood and its intellectual origins. The terms of modern childhood have long positioned children as subjects who know by making them objects of knowledge. This paradox cannot be circumvented without the introduction of an entirely new language of personhood.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Patrick J Ryan"}],"contributor":[],"dateCreated":"2022-03-14","dateModified":"2022-03-14","datePublished":"2008-01-01","headline":"How New Is the “New” Social Study of Childhood? It examines, in particular, the emergence of the interdisciplinary approach called the 'New Social Studies of Childhood', its principal theoretical assumptions, as well as some of the wealth of research that appeared in the wake of the NSSC. Among main theoretical positions of the NSSC are the view of childhood as socially constructed and the view of children as capable social actors (agents). These trends have, in turn, led to the appearance of the body of research into diverse childhoods, depending on the culture, class, gender, (dis)ability, and historical circumstances, with a primary focus on child-centered, child-friendly and child-empowering, participatory research methods. The core NSSC assumptions, critical and even revolutionary for their time, also nurtured what I call the 'geogr...

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"What's New in the New Social Studies of Childhood? For all of its significance, however, this difference does not constitute a paradigmatic or archaeological shift in either the Kuhnian or the Foucauldian senses. This essay provides an alternative history of ideas about children and repositions our understanding of the contemporary social study of them. It is valuable because of childhood’s centrality to both modern thought and the modern state.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"\"How New is the \"New\" Social Studies of the Childhood: the Myth of a Paradigm Shift\"","attachmentId":36598232,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/10704883/_How_New_is_the_New_Social_Studies_of_the_Childhood_the_Myth_of_a_Paradigm_Shift_","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Social Constructions of Childhood (2007)
Will Coster

Childhood and Youth Studies, 2012

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Social Constructions of Childhood (2007)","attachmentId":42530998,"attachmentType":"doc","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/21756241/Social_Constructions_of_Childhood_2007_","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

A Window on the ?New? I suggest that scholars in the United States are on a somewhat different path than their colleagues in other Western countries. Childhood, as opposed to the beliefs of the majority of adults, is not an isolated, protected, well controlled and predictable manner of guiding a child towards the adult world. Childhood is more focused on the general perception of child and suggests the existence of a special, separate and fundamentally different social group and category. A child’s status as seen from the adult view and its culturally and historically defined construct changes and varies with its definition of the physical and/or sexual maturity, legal status or age group affiliation. The concept of child and childhood deals with the individual, usually defined from the point of view of an adult person. Every single child and adult is affected by society’s historical and social constructions. With the alarming increase in the intensity and complexity of physical, emotional and mental ill health, violence, corruption and self-abuse, it is clear that as a society we have lost our natural way of being. The construct of the agentic child represents what may be possible when adults remember the power and responsibility they hold and the possibility of reflecting this back to our children. An adult’s willingness to self-reflect, uncover and deconstruct their own childhood, is what ultimately guides a deep respect, understanding and equality with children.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Social Constructions of Childhood","attachmentId":35028943,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/8632118/Social_Constructions_of_Childhood","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Theorizing childhood
Leena Alanen

Childhood, 2014

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Theorizing childhood","attachmentId":101826169,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/101227424/Theorizing_childhood","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Not So 'New'? Other disciplines joined this growing academic area, from children's geographies to law, so that the phrase ‘childhood studies’ has become a popular label. Policy and practice both influenced, and were influenced by, childhood studies, particularly in relation to promoting children's rights. This paper provides an insider's critique of the current state of childhood studies, with attention to theoretical challenges and its applicability across Majority and Minority Worlds. From a childhood studies’ perspective, the paper suggests the potential of notions of relations, relationships and reciprocity.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Not So 'New'?
