Three problems can be identified. ‘Window-dressing’ prevails in government-developed squares and parks. Their locations and monumentality have made residents less willing to use these spaces. ‘Privatization’ describes how private developers maximize profits at the cost of public life in the urban environment surrounding their projects. ‘Gentrification’, different from its meaning in the West, refers to the tendency to ignore the needs of mid- and low-income residents in public facilities. Not entirely a repetition of the 1950s Western urban renewal, the Chinese cases reflect a society changing from a socialist system to a capitalist one.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">A western discourse of public space, originating in ancient Greece and Rome, has been widely used in architectural and urban research in China and is constantly contested in this geographical and cultural context. The contestation often stems from the cultural differences in understanding and operating the collective realms in Chinese and western cities, which is manifested through the distinctive features of their public spaces. This essay frames an alternative perspective on public space in the Chinese context by exploring the cultural, social, and spatial constructions of collective realms in the Chinese city. Starting from the conceptual origin of the 'public' in Chinese philosophy, this paper elaborates on three culturally grounded ideas related to collective patterns of space creation and practice-the relational circle, the realm of strangers, and the marketplace-and examines how these ideas are articulated by architectural and urban archetypes and in urban developments in Chinese cities.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"The collective realms in the Chinese city: Towards an alternative framework for public space","attachmentId":108138476,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/110269614/The_collective_realms_in_the_Chinese_city_Towards_an_alternative_framework_for_public_space","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/110269614/The_collective_realms_in_the_Chinese_city_Towards_an_alternative_framework_for_public_space"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="5" data-entity-id="33077748" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/33077748/Interpreting_China_s_new_urban_spaces_state_market_and_society_in_action">Interpreting China’s new urban spaces: state, market, and society in action</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="48913942" href="https://hku-hk.academia.edu/SHe">Shenjing He</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Urban Geography, 2016</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Interpreting China’s new urban spaces: state, market, and society in action","attachmentId":54026307,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/33077748/Interpreting_China_s_new_urban_spaces_state_market_and_society_in_action","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/33077748/Interpreting_China_s_new_urban_spaces_state_market_and_society_in_action"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="6" data-entity-id="51044151" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/51044151/Emerging_Public_Realm_of_the_Greater_Bay_Area_Approaches_to_Public_Space_in_a_Chinese_Megaregion">Emerging Public Realm of the Greater Bay Area: Approaches to Public Space in a Chinese Megaregion</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="8579110" href="https://new.academia.edu/MiodragMitrasinovic">Miodrag Mitrasinovic</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Emerging Public Realm of the Greater Bay Area: Approaches to Public Space in a Chinese Megaregion, 2021</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Through illustrated case studies and conceptual re-framings, this volume showcases ongoing transformations in public space, and its relationship to the public realm more broadly in the world's most populous urban megaregion—the Greater Bay Area of southeastern China— projected to reach eighty million inhabitants by the year 2025. This book assembles diverse approaches to interrogating the forms of public space and the public realm that are emerging in the context of this region's rapid urban development in the last forty years, bringing together authors from urbanism, architecture, planning, sociology, anthropology and politics to examine innovative ways of framing and conceptualizing public space in/of the Greater Bay Area. The blend of authors' first-hand practical experiences has created a unique cross-disciplinary book that employs public space to frame issues of planning, political control, social inclusion, participation, learning/education and appropriation in the production of everyday urbanism. In the context of the Greater Bay Area, such spaces and practices also present opportunities for reconfiguring design-driven urban practice beyond traditional interventions manifested by the design of physical objects and public amenities to the design of new social protocols, processes, infrastructures and capabilities. This is a captivating new dimension of urbanism and critical urban practice and will be of interest to academics, students and practitioners interested in urbanization in China.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Emerging Public Realm of the Greater Bay Area: Approaches to Public Space in a Chinese Megaregion","attachmentId":69926488,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/51044151/Emerging_Public_Realm_of_the_Greater_Bay_Area_Approaches_to_Public_Space_in_a_Chinese_Megaregion","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/51044151/Emerging_Public_Realm_of_the_Greater_Bay_Area_Approaches_to_Public_Space_in_a_Chinese_Megaregion"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="7" data-entity-id="16562047" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/16562047/PUBLIC_SPACE_AND_THE_DEVELOPMENT_OF_NEW_CITY_CENTERS_THE_CASE_OF_HANGZHOU">PUBLIC SPACE AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW CITY CENTERS: THE CASE OF HANGZHOU</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="35859590" href="https://upc.academia.edu/mariajosemasnou">maria jose masnou</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Efficient urban mobility is a necessary condition for a successful network of public spaces. As the transportation plans for Hangzhou are being implemented —new BRT and subway networks—, more streets have the potential to become dynamic public spaces and new civic axes. Streets should be considered as successful public spaces and not as mere traffic lanes, which means reconsidering their role and design in new urban mobility strategies. Our research will focus on the study of three central public space nodes whose distinctive urban fabric and public places are the result of different periods in the city's history and its spatial transformation. At present the three subjects of study face diverse challenges and problems as public space nodes and for their efficient connectivity. Field work and analysis of the main assets, deficits and challenges of the three selected central public spaces nodes will be presented: the West lake area, Qiantiang Century City and the Grand Canal area. Finally, using a research by design approach, the study considers the importance of and opportunities for improving connectivity between these central areas in order to build a new extended centrality including all these areas, which would rescale the former West Lake centrality area into a new multi-node city zones.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link
