href="/study/matthew/26.htm">Berean Study Bible
Then they spat in His face
The act of spitting in someone's face is a profound gesture of contempt and humiliation. In the cultural and historical context of the time, spitting was considered one of the most degrading insults. The Greek word used here, "ἐμπτύω" (emptyō), signifies a deliberate act of scorn. This action against Jesus fulfills the prophecy in Isaiah 50:6, where the Suffering Servant is described as enduring such shame. It highlights the depth of human sinfulness and the extent of Christ's willingness to endure humiliation for the sake of humanity's redemption.
and struck Him
The Greek word "κολαφίζω" (kolaphizō) means to strike with the fist. This physical assault on Jesus is not just an act of violence but also a symbolic rejection of His authority and divinity. In the context of the Passion narrative, it underscores the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah's suffering. The striking of Jesus can be seen as a representation of humanity's rebellion against God, yet it also points to the redemptive power of Christ's suffering, as He absorbs the violence and sin of the world.
Others slapped Him
The word "ῥαπίζω" (rhapizō) refers to slapping with an open hand, another form of insult and mockery. This act further emphasizes the humiliation Jesus faced. In the historical context, slapping was a way to demean someone publicly, stripping them of dignity. Theologically, this moment reflects the paradox of the Gospel: the King of Kings subjected to the lowest form of human scorn. It serves as a powerful reminder of Jesus' humility and His submission to the Father's will, even in the face of unjust suffering. This act of slapping, while intended to disgrace, ultimately magnifies the glory of Christ's sacrificial love.
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(67) Then did they spit in his face.--We learn from St. Mark (Mark 14:65) and St. Luke (Luke 22:63) that these acts of outrage were perpetrated, not by the members of the Sanhedrin, but by the officers who had the accused in their custody, and who, it would seem, availed themselves of the interval between the two meetings of the council to indulge in this wanton cruelty. Here, also, they were unconsciously working out a complete correspondence with Isaiah's picture of the righteous sufferer (Isaiah 1:6). The word "buffeted" describes a blow with the clenched fist, as contrasted with one with the open palm.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 67. - The scene that ensued upon the verdict being pronounced is beyond measure hideous and unexampled. When the meeting broke up, Jesus was for a time left to the brutal cruelty and the unbridled insolence of the guards and servants. Involuntarily, by their profanity and coarseness, they fulfilled the words of the prophet, speaking in the Person of Messiah, "I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair; I hid not my face from shame and spitting" (Isaiah 50:6). Did they spit in his face. A monstrous indignity, so regarded by all people at all times (Numbers 12:14; Deuteronomy 25:9; Job 30:10). Buffeted him (ἐκολάφισαν αὐτὸν); struck him with fists. Smote him with the palms of their hands (ἐῥῤάπισαν). There is some doubt whether the verb here means "to smite with a rod" or "to slap in the face with the open hand;" but as we have already had mention of striking with the hands, it is probable that beating with a stick is here intended.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Greek
Then
Τότε (Tote)
Adverb
Strong's 5119: Then, at that time.
