This paper proposes an archaeological reading of Norse mythology to help explain how ancient Scandinavians understood the presence and role of deities, magic, and the supernatural in everyday life. The Norse myths retain records of material objects that reinforced Scandinavian oral traditions and gave their stories power, memory, and influence. From Thor’s hammer and Freyja’s feathered cloak to Sigyn’s bowl and Ran’s net, such materials and the stories they colour are informed by everyday objects of Iron Age life – spun with the magic, belief, and narrative traditions that made them icons. The mythic objects promoted a belief system that expected and embraced the imperfections of objects, much like deities. These imperfections in the divine Norse objects and the ways in which the gods interact with their materials are part and parcel of the Scandinavian religious mentality and collective social reality. This work ultimately questions the relationship between materiality and myth, and seeks to nuance our current understandings of the ancient Scandinavian worldview based on the available textual evidence.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Sara Ann It asks how people in the past configured their world and its complex interactions, to which their orally-constructed stories bear witness. It is assumed here that myths contain structures of belief, cognition, and world-making beyond their immediate subject matter. This article focuses specifically on the preservation of material objects in myths throughout their transmission from changing oral narratives to written form. We should not assume that objects in oral traditions simply color the narratives; rather, these representations of materials can provide clues into the mentalities of past peoples and how they understood the complex interaction between humans and materials. As a case study, I examine the Old Norse myths, stories containing materials that reinforced Scandinavian oral traditions and gave the stories traction, memory, and influence. In doing so, this article hopes to help bridge materiality studies, narrative studies, and folklore in a way that does not privilege one particular source type over another. The myths reveal ancient Scandinavian conceptions of what constituted an “object,” which are not necessarily the same as our own twenty-first century expectations. The Scandinavian myths present a world not divided between active Subject, passive Object as the Cartesian model would enforce centuries later, but rather one that recognized distinctive object agencies beyond the realm of human intention.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"When Objects Misbehave: Materials \u0026 Assemblages in the Ancient Scandinavian Myths","attachmentId":98807618,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/44474512/When_Objects_Misbehave_Materials_and_Assemblages_in_the_Ancient_Scandinavian_Myths","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

EMBODYING THE PAST: Relics and Remains in Old Norse Literature
Olivia E Smith

2019

This thesis explores the relationship between depictions of the dead and the representation of the past in Old Norse literature. The holy and the pre-Christian dead are read as representations of two different pasts: the collective Christian past of medieval Europe inherited by Scandinavia through conversion; and the indigenous, pagan past which informed many facets of medieval Scandinavian society. Depictions of the dead shed light on the negotiation of religious and cultural identity in medieval Norway and Iceland, as they provided one way for a medieval audience to encounter and confront aspects of these pasts. This thesis situates depictions of saints’ relics and other remains within a theoretical framework drawn from the discipline of museology. As museums represent the past through the interpretation of objects, they provide an interesting conceptual model through which to view the medieval Church and the relationship it facilitated between the living and the holy dead. The space of the church is understood through the application of structuralist and philosopher Michel Foucault’s work within the field of museum studies, and museum processes are used to further engage with the place of the dead within it. The medieval church is here interpreted as a heterotopia, which like a museum, can juxtapose temporally and geographically varied pasts within a single location, as well as uniting terrestrial and celestial places within Foucault’s conception of medieval space. Chapter 1 investigates textual accounts of the medieval church in Old Norse literature as a place to encounter the holy dead through the presence of holy relics. It addresses Norway’s participation in the Cult of the Saints through the discovery, translation and enshrinement of Saint Óláfr’s relics, and argues that depictions of these events permit Norway to partake in the collective inheritance of the Christian past through the creation of its first indigenous saint. Chapter 2 considers Iceland’s relationship to the past illustrated through encounters with the holy and the pre-Christian indigenous dead. Like Norway, Iceland enters the Christian past through the cult of its first indigenous saint, Saint Þorlákr, which necessitates negotiating the relationship to the relatively recent pre-Christian past. Depictions of “reverse-translations” in Laxdæla saga and Egils saga Skallagrímssonar are viewed as representations of attempts on Iceland’s part to reconcile its Christian present and its pagan past.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"EMBODYING THE PAST: Relics and Remains in Old Norse Literature","attachmentId":66287318,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/46916996/EMBODYING_THE_PAST_Relics_and_Remains_in_Old_Norse_Literature","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Anders Andrén, Kristina Jennbert and Catharina Raudvere (eds), Old Norse Religion in Long-Term Perspectives. Schematized, twisted anatomies emerged from the rends of wood, were relieved into stone monuments, cast in metals such as silver and bronze, and carved into segments of animal bone. While the Latin West would establish conventions for representing figures that visibly asserted the emotive expressivity of the face and body to circumscribe the beholder’s expected emotional (and spiritual) comportment, the figures represented in medieval Norse art are lacking in physiognomic distinctions such as defined facial features or somatic expressions of emotion. If their anatomical configurations do not appear to convey behavioral codes, then what could they refer to? What cultural factors contributed to their distortion, and how were they read by their intended beholders? This article argues that such enigmatic bodies did not represent human anatomy as it appeared before the eye, but gestured to a broad, flexible, and supernatural corporeality that transgressed the divisions between divine, human, and animal of Latin Western art and thought. Centering three small objects—a bone button-plaque, a silver disc-brooch from Gotland, and a bronze costume needle head—it employs an art-historical perspective to draw out the idiosyncrasies of Old Norse thought as it played out in material culture.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Distorted, Dismembered, Diffused: Rethinking the Body in Old Norse Material Culture","attachmentId":82516067,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/56049325/Distorted_Dismembered_Diffused_Rethinking_the_Body_in_Old_Norse_Material_Culture","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Iron Age Myth and Materiality: An Archaeology of Scandinavia AD 400-1000
Lotte Hedeager

2011

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Iron Age Myth and Materiality: An Archaeology of Scandinavia AD 400-1000","attachmentId":107925592,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/109958895/Iron_Age_Myth_and_Materiality_An_Archaeology_of_Scandinavia_AD_400_1000","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Folklore and Old Norse Mythology (ed. Helsinki: Kalevala Society., 2021

The present volume responds to the rising boom of interest in folklore and folklore research in the study of Old Norse mythology. The twenty-two authors of this volume reveal the dynamism of this lively dialogue, which is characterized by a diversity of perspectives linking to different fields and national scholarships. The chapters open with a general overview of how the concepts of “folklore” and “mythology” have been understood and related across the history of Old Norse studies, which is followed by a group of chapters that discuss and present different approaches and types of source materials, with methodological and theoretical concerns. The interest in folklore is bound up with interests in practice and lived religion, which are brought into focus in a series of chapters relating to magic and ritual. Attention then turns to images that link to mythology and different mythic agents in studies that explore a variety of usage in meaning-making in different forms of cultural expression. The next group of studies spotlights motifs, with perspectives on synchronic usage across genres and different media, cross-cultural exchange, and long-term continuities. The volume culminates in discussions of complex stories, variously in oral traditions behind medieval sources and relationships between accounts found in medieval sources and those recorded from more recent traditions. Individually, the chapters variously offer reflexive and historical research criticism, new research frameworks, illustrative studies, and exploratory investigations. Collectively, they illustrate the rapidly evolving multidisciplinary discussion at the intersections of folklore and Old Norse mythology, where the transformative impacts were recently described as a paradigm shift. They open new paths for scholarly discussion with the potential to inspire future research.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Folklore and Old Norse Mythology (ed.
