Their etymology, history, social meaning, methods of production and uses are representative of local communities and cultural traditions that need to survive and flourish in the age of globalisation. Traditional African textiles, coming from a long tradition of weaving and relating to philosophy, oral literature, history, ethics, religious belief, and political thoughts, are an example of tangible (fabric) and intangible (art of weaving) Cultural Heritage to be safeguarded by their knowledge and use. This is the case of Kente cloth, one of the most famous and precious hand-woven African fabrics: crafted since the 17th century by village communities of the Ashanti Region and worn by Ghanaian kings, this ceremonial fabric is still considered a luxury item and a cultural asset to be protected. In the last few centuries, the African emigrants’ displacement has favoured traditional fabrics knowledge worldwide, but their perception and meaning have changed within new global contexts and communities: promoting creativity applied to traditional fabrics for actualising their use while respecting values and tradition is now challenging. This paper illustrates “Korai x Kente”, a fashion eco-design and eco-craft project of inclusive and sustainable business, developed between Ghana and Sicily by the Italian Cultural and Creative Industry “Kòrai – Territorio, Sviluppo e Cultura”, and endorsed by the Honorary Consulate of Ghana in Sicily. The project, aimed at promoting the traditional Kente cloth and the integration among different cultures, focuses on social innovation and interculturalism, involves weavers of local communities in Ghana producing the Kente cloth and Sicilian designers and craftsmen creating traditional and contemporary eco-design and eco-craft objects in Kente, whose cultural values are also shared on a web platform. The project even supports women in Ghana to start a job by micro-credit.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"THE “KORAI X KENTE” PROJECT: TURNING THE HANDMADE GHANAIAN KENTE CLOTH FROM A LOCAL EXPRESSION OF CULTURAL IDENTITY TO A CONTEMPORARY CREATIVE FASHION TOOL BY INVOLVING COMMUNITIES BETWEEN GHANA AND SICILY","attachmentId":68308085,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/43977548/THE_KORAI_X_KENTE_PROJECT_TURNING_THE_HANDMADE_GHANAIAN_KENTE_CLOTH_FROM_A_LOCAL_EXPRESSION_OF_CULTURAL_IDENTITY_TO_A_CONTEMPORARY_CREATIVE_FASHION_TOOL_BY_INVOLVING_COMMUNITIES_BETWEEN_GHANA_AND_SICILY","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/43977548/THE_KORAI_X_KENTE_PROJECT_TURNING_THE_HANDMADE_GHANAIAN_KENTE_CLOTH_FROM_A_LOCAL_EXPRESSION_OF_CULTURAL_IDENTITY_TO_A_CONTEMPORARY_CREATIVE_FASHION_TOOL_BY_INVOLVING_COMMUNITIES_BETWEEN_GHANA_AND_SICILY"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="2" data-entity-id="50572007" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/50572007/The_Relevance_and_Symbolism_of_Clothes_within_Traditional_Institutions_and_Its_Modern_Impacts_on_the_Ghanaian_Culture">The Relevance and Symbolism of Clothes within Traditional Institutions and Its Modern Impacts on the Ghanaian Culture</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="110018373" href="https://independent.academia.edu/DrRichardGbadegbe">Dr. Richard Gbadegbe</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Arts and Design Studies, 2013</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"The Relevance and Symbolism of Clothes within Traditional Institutions and Its Modern Impacts on the Ghanaian Culture","attachmentId":68502535,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/50572007/The_Relevance_and_Symbolism_of_Clothes_within_Traditional_Institutions_and_Its_Modern_Impacts_on_the_Ghanaian_Culture","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/50572007/The_Relevance_and_Symbolism_of_Clothes_within_Traditional_Institutions_and_Its_Modern_Impacts_on_the_Ghanaian_Culture"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="3" data-entity-id="106251360" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/106251360/Indigenous_Basketry_Furniture_Art_in_Upper_West_Region_of_Ghana_Opportunities_and_Sustainability">Indigenous Basketry Furniture Art in Upper West Region of Ghana: Opportunities and Sustainability</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="99216873" href="https://uew.academia.edu/naveinyamawero">Nyamawero Navei</a><span>, </span><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="3180290" href="https://uew.academia.edu/KwameKyereDiabour">Kwame Kyere Diabour</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Journal of Innovations in Art & Culture for Nature Conservation and Environmental Sustainability, 2023</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Basketry, as an artistic discourse, is one of the enviable indigenous heritage arts that evolves with society and is still of great relevance in contemporary African civilisation. Although the primary historical reason for the perpetuation of basketry art in many ancient African societies was largely utilitarian, the scope of basketry has since metamorphosed beyond its functional focus to include aesthetic, economic, and many opportunities that are geared toward meeting the sociocultural and economic needs of African societies. The focus of this qualitative case study was to investigate the opportunities and sustainability of indigenous basketry furniture artistic practices in the geographical context of the Upper West Region of Ghana. Thematic analysis of triangulated data generated from twenty-seven (27) conveniently sampled experts reveals the use of local technology and ingenuity in the indigenous basketry furniture artistic practices in the Sissala West District, Sisaala East and Jirapa Municipalities in the Upper West Region. The study also found that the indigenous basketry furniture products (lounge chairs, beds, dining tables, local market tables among others) meet ready market thereby providing lucrative economic gains to the artisans. The study concludes that the indigenous basketry furniture art in the Sissala West District, Sisaala East and Jirapa Municipalities in the Upper West Region of Ghana is an economically viable vocation that provides decent livelihood to its practitioners. The artisans are, therefore encouraged to seek governmental and non-governmental funding to expand the frontiers of the vocation within global sustainability dictates for massive employment and industrial production.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Indigenous Basketry Furniture Art in Upper West Region of Ghana: Opportunities and Sustainability","attachmentId":105497015,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/106251360/Indigenous_Basketry_Furniture_Art_in_Upper_West_Region_of_Ghana_Opportunities_and_Sustainability","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/106251360/Indigenous_Basketry_Furniture_Art_in_Upper_West_Region_of_Ghana_Opportunities_and_Sustainability"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="4" data-entity-id="65693718" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/65693718/Artistic_and_Cultural_Significance_of_Ghanaian_Printed_Fabric_Designs">Artistic and Cultural Significance of Ghanaian Printed Fabric Designs</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="93061116" href="https://independent.academia.edu/EmmanuelAmissah7">Emmanuel K O D W O Amissah</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Current Trends in Fashion Technology & Textile Engineering, 2018</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Artistic and Cultural Significance of Ghanaian Printed Fabric Designs","attachmentId":77179747,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/65693718/Artistic_and_Cultural_Significance_of_Ghanaian_Printed_Fabric_Designs","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/65693718/Artistic_and_Cultural_Significance_of_Ghanaian_Printed_Fabric_Designs"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="5" data-entity-id="39683527" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/39683527/Cultural_and_Symbolic_Interpretation_of_Selected_Wax_Print_Designs_on_Ghanaian_Fabrics">Cultural and Symbolic Interpretation of Selected Wax Print Designs on Ghanaian Fabrics</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="117819626" href="https://edithcowan.academia.edu/EnockSwanzyImpraim">Enock Swanzy-Impraim</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">IOJPH - International open Journal of Humanities and Social Science, 2018</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Although Ghanaian textiles have undergone several phases of ascension and declining, they are still significant in the culture of the people. They therefore choose designs and wear without knowing their cultural interpretations and the kind of signals and messages they are sending across. These names and meanings are only known to few and therefore need some form of scholarly documentation. The study made use of qualitative research methodology. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the respondents for the study. Interviews were conducted and participant observations made at the various shops to gather data for the study. The study concluded that Ghanaian fabrics have unique names in relation to their composition and designs. Fabrics chosen based on the message the wearer want to send across, mood of the wearer or occasion and its significance are enormous. It is recommended that stakeholders in textile education and fashion should give prominence and attention to Ghanaian fabrics and the cultural and symbolic interpretations of their names.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Cultural and Symbolic Interpretation of Selected Wax Print Designs on\r\nGhanaian Fabrics","attachmentId":59852024,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/39683527/Cultural_and_Symbolic_Interpretation_of_Selected_Wax_Print_Designs_on_Ghanaian_Fabrics","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/39683527/Cultural_and_Symbolic_Interpretation_of_Selected_Wax_Print_Designs_on_Ghanaian_Fabrics"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="6" data-entity-id="105978636" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/105978636/Emblematic_Interpretation_of_the_Designs_of_Selected_Kente_Fabrics_among_Ashanti_People_of_Ghana">Emblematic Interpretation of the Designs of Selected Kente Fabrics among Ashanti People of Ghana</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="51561683" href="https://bpoly.academia.edu/DanielAkuokoAdjei">Daniel A K U O K O Adjei</a><span>, </span><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="64570358" href="https://independent.academia.edu/lindaarmah">linda armah</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Art and Design Review, 2023</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Ghana is a country which is located in the West of the African continent. The Ghanaians have a rich cultural heritage that they cherish most. This cultural heritage could be seen through the way they dress during occasions such as funerals, weddings, festivals, durbars and naming ceremonies. Some of the fabrics that people wear during these occasions are Kente cloths, "nteimu" and "kuntukuni" cloths (clothes stamped with locally prepared dyes). The Kente, "nteimu" and "kuntukuni" are locally produced by the people of Bonwire, Adawonmase and Ntonso. Although these clothes have some special designs and motifs that make them unique and aesthetically pleasing, they have not been effectively and comprehensively researched. This study intends to identify and describe the various designs and motifs in these fabrics, and then give the philosophical meanings associated with the designs and the motifs in them. The descriptive research design which is under the qualitative research approach was espoused to accomplish the goal and purpose of the study. In all, 20 woven Kente fabrics were sampled for the study using a purposive sampling technique. Of these, 5 were used for festival celebrations, 5 for marriage ceremonies, 5 for funeral celebrations and 5 for durbars and parties. The primary data was collected using interviews, observations and opinionnaire. The results showed that designs and motifs which are seen in the Kente cloths have philosophical meaning that can help one to understand his or her culture. In addition, some of the motifs and designs used to produce the various fabrics exhibit the creative abilities of our forefathers and their belief system. Also, the research revealed that some of the designs and motifs are used for prestigious and aesthetic purposes.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Emblematic Interpretation of the Designs of Selected Kente Fabrics among Ashanti People of Ghana","attachmentId":105297863,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/105978636/Emblematic_Interpretation_of_the_Designs_of_Selected_Kente_Fabrics_among_Ashanti_People_of_Ghana","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/105978636/Emblematic_Interpretation_of_the_Designs_of_Selected_Kente_Fabrics_among_Ashanti_People_of_Ghana"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="7" data-entity-id="94182009" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/94182009/qualitative_inquiry_into_kete_weaving_as_a_developing_culture_in_the_Akatsi_district">qualitative inquiry into kete weaving as a developing culture in the Akatsi district</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="171145323" href="https://independent.academia.edu/RobertKpogo">Robert Kpogo</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Journal of African History, Culture and Arts</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">In Ghana, Kente or Kete weaving is known to be done predominantly in areas of Bonwire, Ashanti Region and Agotime, Volta Region however the art is gradually gaining prominence in other communities in the Volta Region.
